In hockey, like in life, you tolerate short-term failure if you perceive significant long-term potential.
It was fine early in the season when everyone on the team sucked, but most of the players have found their game and are playing well now. Suzuki is producing like a legit #1, Caufield and Slaf form a legit #1 line. The bottom 6 is on fire, Monty is playing well, the defense has tightened up without Barron.

It sucks but Dach is the main problem holding the team back right now, if we had a real 2nd line we would be so much better as a team. Of course we shouldn't waive him but it is frustrating seeing our potential as a team held back so drastically.

We're essentially wasting 2 seasons because of Dach, but maybe it will all be for the best if we get a bonus tank year and he bounces back next season.

Why is Newhook getting a pass? Considering he didnt have to deal with a potential career ending injury. 6 goals with no passes playing top 6 is quite difficult to achieve. I see progress in the last couple of games for Dach but I think he will need the whole season to reach the level he was before the injury. With that being said , I would switch Heineman and Newhook on the line up.

Newhook does't get a pass but at least he wasn't acquired to play 2C

Dach was a nice gamble. Hes not getting paid like a 2C. If he doesnt make it, they will need to find a replacement. He was never a sure thing a 2C in my book

They should give him every opportunity to succeed this season …. BUT … after this season, they have to :

1. make a decision on the 2nd center. Acquisition? Bridge to Hage? Dach? Too important a position to wait on that (internal) decision.

2. Forget about the draft ranking. #3OA is history. We spent years waiting on KK and JoJo, while shipping Lehkonen off to be a 60+ point player in Col. Let’s not repeat.

Career high season “pace“ - 54 points (~22 games at center).

Career 36 pt average.
My point exactly he has never shown anything that would suggest he has what it takes to play 2 C. I'm not saying it wasn't good punt, all I'm saying is that this hole narrative of Dach returning to his former self or to what he was before is flawed because he never showed anything besides being drafted 3rd overall.

Which was also a reach. His draft numbers did not show him being a wise pick at 3, but people just love that “toolsy” big body guy that has hints of a mean streak.

He did show signs of aggression during his hot streak a couple seasons ago. He was confident with the puck on his stick and consistently keeping the puck away from defenders with his body and strong stick.

He needs to get back to that, stat. It pretty much all comes down to effort. He has to want it.

Dach was ranked highly by all scouting services.

I see 12th, 10th, 7th, 5th, 4th, 7th, 12th, 5th, 11th, 8th, 8th, 4th, 10th, 8th, 8th, 3rd.

By the way tools and size are valuable.

Right, but far from a concensus 3rd overall selection.

For good reason, it was a deep draft with much better options.

Tools and size are valuable? Agreed, but only if you use them. Which Dach isn’t right now.

Lekhonen never reached 60 points in his career.
No need to exagerate

3rd OA +
Play on wing with Suzuki +
Short sample at Center …

Expectations can get a little ahead of reality.

All right, Dach never had any of potential, skill, or performance. Habs should trade him for a 7th, call up Gignac, and move on.

Dach looked a bit better against Columbus.

I think the Habs might have to stick it out with him until some point next season and see if things get back.

Definitely for this season anyway.

What options present themselves in the offseason may dictate next year, but having him next year may be the only option as well.

When he’s been available, has produced at a 61 pt clip.
110 points in 149 games.

67 point clip in the playoffs.
Being able to stay healthy is part of the game. The fact remain, Lekhnone never had a 60 points season in his career. And hes playing with one of the best player in the league

Hughes doesn't appear to me as the type of guy who will sell low. I expect Dach to have a loooong runway in the next 18 months. When the time to renew his contract will come they'll make a decision about him. Until then it makes zero sense to trade him and we'll need to massively overpay to get a productive-right-now center to replace him anyway.

If the past doesn't fit your narrative simply change the past.
The poster was not far off. Dach has shown little to suggest he is a legit 2c. He had an ok start to his MTL stint but the majority of his 5v5 points were on the wing with NS.

Dach has shown squat so far to suggest he can be the 2c, that is the reality.
