Also, he's only 24 years old, some players like Drouin, had their best seasons at 28 years old. We can't give up on him before that, imagine if he turns into a 100-points two-way monster ? Keep faith.
The guy that did nothing until he was put with MacKinnon?

I say keep working with Kirby Dach. His trade value is very low at this point.
Kappo Kakko got a bottom pairing defensemen, a 3rd and a 5th.
Common sense is not welcome here. Dach must be waived and traded... Or the other way around, once we do that we will win 10 cups. We also need to waive Primeau to "send a message" because apparently the backup here is beloved. And don't forget to fire KH for not having the ability to see the future like so many here can easily do from their couch.

I'm not ready to give up on Dach just yet for the simple reason that he had the kind of surgery that takes up to two years to come back from.
Yes, he's injury prone and may never even get back to where he was in the sample size of two seasons ago, but he's shown flashes of brilliance and the size / skill combo is a rare commodity in the NHL.
Maybe he ends up being a winger, maybe Hughes moves him if it doesn't work out.

The Newhook move is not looking that good. He strikes me as the kind of player who's brain never catches up to his skating. A lot was given up for him too. He's also undersized on a team that desperately needs more size up front.
I get that Hughes is trying to unearth gems and the fact he's accumulated a lot of picks, allows him to do this.
He's going to have to find another elite forward next summer - in the draft or trade, but it's a must.
I'd move on from Newhook sooner. Maybe he's a3rd liner - but I'd like to see much more size in bottom 6, thus he's expendable, imo

Hughes needs to turn off his ringer when MacFarland calls. Seriously

Eh, agree to disagree. A late first and early second is basically nothing. Last 31st overall worth a damn is markstrom in 2008 and then Felix Potvin in 1990. For 37 you got Carlo in 15, Jenner in 11, Faulk in 10 and then Mats Naslund in freaking 1979.

Statistically you trade for a player who's in the NHL already even if he's a tweener for the pick every single time past pick #20.

Drouin didn't really do anything with MacKinnon. He had 3 more points last season than his 53 he had before (twice) and it wasn't even his best p/pg season, just his 2nd season with the most game played.

Is he turning the corner? He’s had strong outings against Buffalo Detroit (x2) and Columbus. Way more confident with the puck. Skating looks better. Stronger on the boards.

Still a ways to go, but he looks better. Seems to have lost weight as well. No longer bloated in the face
Management said at season start that it would take him 40 games, not quite there yet, but getting much closer and it's not something that gets turned via a switch, it's gradual improvements. It's just getting more noticeable because he can move better on the ice and is stronger on his feet.

What do they know? I was told it should take 10 games! He was ready to go last year that lazy bum

Food for thought Jesse Ylonen put up 6 goals 10 assists and a -11 in 37 games playing on a 4th line in 22/23.
What should we be getting out of Newhook and Dach to warrant keeping them in place?
I'm willing to write off the first 34 games but the numbers we are seeing can't be acceptable anymore.
Starting from now if they can't out pace Jesse Ylonen in all three columns we have a big problem.

In hockey, like in life, you tolerate short-term failure if you perceive significant long-term potential.

There must be something MSL/HuGo likes in Newhook/Dach otherwise they would be sitting in the stands like Ylonen was.

So he beat his best season which was 7 years prior. Yeah, it definitely helped.

I agree and the short term is now over.
Time off reset write everything down to zero and start afresh.
These are guys that were selected to produce I'm not sure if we can re-write their roles.

The reason I brought up Ylonen was the fact that he was brought up for the back half of that season and no he didn't sit out too often.
Keep in mind he also played 39 games in Laval that year.
I also don't think there is anything our front office could possibly like with those numbers.
Keep in mind these two acquisitions were very high profile selections and are supposed to be roster ready additions.
Being roster ready in the back half would be nice.

It's a figure of speech. And no 34 games in a season where the Habs are sub-bubble either way is not a big loss.

You brought up Ylonen. The reason he didn't get more of an opportunity is almost certainly because Habs management didn't perceive any long term potential in him. I'm guessing that his ceiling if everything went right might have been a below average third liner.

Ylonen never showed the upside that other two have at NHL level. He never really progressed like a Heineman has. Plus there is obviously other factors (Ylonen being a pick from former regime/draft pedigree/cost of acquisition)

MSL clearly didn't like Ylonen thought, regardless of his production.

Oh I'm not questioning the upside which is why I purposely used Ylonen.
The bar I set is low Guys and regardless of what is past I'll stick to what I initially wrote.
If one or the other don't manage those numbers I expect noise lots of loud noise.
These are not rookies.

We know our team was not gifted for decades offensively when people talk about Ylonen in a Kirby Dach thread. Jiri Sekac, our Wayne Gretzky

Dach has never shown anything at the NHL level. Not sure why people are so confident he will "turn the corner"
