Kingston Frontenacs 2024-25 Season Thread, Part II

Trying to stay optimistic but schenkel has to stop some of those and he needs to start getting into a groove pretty soon.

None the less pretty good job by the team tonight.

Yeah this Schenkel thing is starting to worry me a bit. I thought he would have settled into a groove by now but this is getting bad. Outscoring your problems is great in the regular season but in the playoffs that stuff just doesn't fly.

Thoughts:
- Another awful start... I don't know why they they always find themselves down early. Good thing is they have the firepower to battle back but it'll be a hell of a lot harder to battle back in the playoffs.

- Another not great game by Schenkel. Much improved in the third but still overall not ideal
Goal 1, defensive breakdown, no chance.
Goal 2, awful give away by Burns so it put him in a tough spot but I'd like a goalie to save 1-on-1s more often than not - tough to blame him but in the playoffs that's a stop they need.
Goal 3, I don't know if it hit a stick but it was a just a standard shot from far out - should be saved.
Goal 4, why is he just lying on the ice? I don't know if he thought the puck was going to bounce out front quicker but Sima had all day to elevate the puck
Goal 5, overcommitted to Guo and couldn't get back in time. Parekh shouldn't be allowed to get that shot off in the slot but with better positioning he might've been able to get his body on it.

- Does anyone know Kingston's record for goal scoring streak? Uronen's at 9, and I went back as far as I could go and the next highest was Brad Horan and Martin Chromiak at 8.

- One of Uens' best games of the year topped off with a gorgeous spinning backhand goal. The whole team was loving those backdoor feeds and why not, they worked all game

- I've tried to watch most road games this year and Saginaw's broadcast is easily one of the best - announcers that knew what they were talking about, no overly homer calls, actually had goalscorer graphics at the ready with pictures/hometowns.

Big game tonight between Barrie and Oshawa - hopefully it ends in regulation so there's no loser point.

For Schenkel to come up with a perfect game, he needs his team in front of him to have a perfect game, cutting out their time and space. This means stopping their opponents from setting up for a good shot or a play. If they do this, everyone (all players on the team) will have a great game together as a team. It is a team game.

What do you get out of coming on here with this obnoxious self-righteousness... No duh it's a team game but a team is made up of individual players. No team is ever going to have all 18 skaters and goalie have a great game at the same time, that's just human nature.

Sometimes when players are slumping other players need to pick up the slack. Schenkel is slumping and the offense is picking him up, there's a reason Schenkel is 5-0 despite having a GAA over 4 and a SV% of 0.832. The offense has scored 32 goals in his 5 wins (29 in the last 4) - that's not sustainable so when the offense in front of him inevitably slows down and slumps, Kingston will need Schenkel to pick them up.

Not every comment on a player is a personal attack.

I guess, it's not everyone that ever experienced a winning championship, my mistake, carry on

🎯 with this. Not sure who you were replying to as it seems comment is deleted.

Schenkel definitely needs to be way better. At this point I’d almost hope Betts gets the call to be the starter for the flint and Sarnia games. Schenkel has not come as advertised meanwhile Lalonde is now playing like the second coming of Dominik Hasek. Unreal.

An 0.832 sv% isn’t good enough at any level let alone a starting goalie in the OHL.

Charlies a great kid- just as Nolan was and just as Mason is and Gavin is, however it seems Charlie’s trade has affected him mentally in some sort- maybe isn’t as comfortable with the fronts as he was with the Soo. Or maybe something else going on in his life such as a lingering injury? not to speculate but his play has clearly deteriorated since the last time he laced it up with the Soo.

I still see it so I'm guessing you've done the smart thing and ignored the clown that thinks telling Kingston fans they haven't won a championship is some brand new revelation.

The only thing I can hope with Schenkel is that it's just him having a longer than expected adjustment period. By all accounts he loved Soo and had been there for the last 3 years, so even though it's been 3 weeks maybe he's still not used to the new environment. Hopefully this road trip continues to get him comfortable with the team, I'd rather him struggle now and right the ship for the stretch run/playoffs than the opposite. Clearly he has the ability, it's just a matter of drawing it out.

Lol yeah I’ve ignored a few people on here. Not more than a handful though.

Some people are so miserable- see a franchise like Kingston having a good year and always need to throw it in the face. Insecurity I think that’s what that would be. They can pretend they don’t care but if that’s the reality why would they come on here? I believe this is one of the best teams kingston has ever had. They may not win a championship but only 1 team does that this year.

Good point. I wonder if they let him get crappy teams here and there if he would regain confidence.

Or they keep playing him and they keep winning and things sort themselves out, as they tend to do in sports.

I haven’t played goalie but I’d imagine that’s more mental than let’s say a forward or a d. If he’s getting 5 or 6 goals on him per game you don’t think that would play into the mental part of it? Especially since he’s only 20. He goes from getting Charlie chants and in the running for goalie of the year to getting traded to kingston and doing a complete 180.

He’s got to have a couple bad teams here and maybe he gains some confidence and rather than like 5 goals on 25-30 shots in the playoffs maybe he only lets in 2 or 3. Everyone has bad games and slumps but it’s a little worrisome that we’re at the end of January and still having these conversations. When do we re evaluate?March? April? When the fronts are out?

Gotta think cooper has in the back of his head right now that this isn’t what they paid for and we know how hard it was for him to trade Lalonde. Not sure how many cards they have but I’d play Betts for a few games here and send him back. Betts is more reliable than vaccari at this point. If we’re in a playoff series with Vaccari and Betts as the options (if there were an injury to Schenkel) as of today I’d pick Betts.

Only positive I see out of this is that I don’t see the possibility of Schenkel playing any worse. Because a 16 year old goalie has much better number than him right now.

Really rooting for him but at some point it’s time to admit he has a lot to work on and maybe giving him the easy teams where the fronts dominate may not be a bad idea here.

Goalies are a different breed. I have 2 in my household and the minute you think you know what makes them tick, they will get more complicated. Generally the Fronts are giving up fewer shots than maybe he wants or is used to so he needs to adjust. I’m sure It would easy to find a fault in something else if it was Schenkel. They are winning, and have time to figure things out. Soon their scoring may go through a drought or maybe other players start to score. Mann is an excellent coach who has the belief of the players and they will be ready for the playoffs.
