If i remember right there was a bunch of rumours on here saying multiple targets (I seem to remember Bonk and Cristoforo's names coming up) wouldn't waive to come to Kingston.

I also think they overpaid because they had loved Miedema as a prospect since the draft and they thought they had him until Windsor swooped him up.
Yes players didn't want to waive to come here, but Wright didn't waive to certain spots either. I heard from multiple different people that Beaudoin was coming here for Wright and Haché in a package deal but Wright shut it down. I never heard the full package, but I almost don't think I want to hear it based on what we ended up with lol

I think it was clear Kingston wanted a RD and believed they could have Akey, Bonk, Christiforo, or Mews; and probably would have accepted Meidema, Lardis, VanVolsen, before Beaudoin.

Akey very well could have been in that package with Beaudoin for all we know. Management was also really high on Beaudoin and wanted to draft him but he went 10th and we ended up with Frasca at 17.

This is whole conversation is hypothetical of course since it never happened but just imagine Beaudoin and Battaglia were the Fronts' first two picks that year? Dear lord that would have been something.

Beaudoin would be nice for sure. But Kingston wanted a RD, and Barrie was not trading Akey is pretty much the whole story.

Here is what Kingston got for wright

Miedema
Gavin McCarthy, no show
Weir
Vellaris
Nettleton

Out of these picks there are soe this year also that they can use intrades or draft.

Miedema has been so-so, although he has picked his game this year

Vellaris is showing signs

Nettleton is in the US leagues so still trying to figure out him.

Weire Who knows

The trick to making the right deal work is to develop Vellaris, draft well with the picks, or turn them into stars that the team can use.

Suggestion might be package picks and Weir in a deal that brings you a 18/19-year-old

Further shows what a horrible trade that was.

I typically don't like using who ended up being picked with draft picks to look back on a trade - it's too easy to twist the results to fit a narrative.

For example in 2019 Kingston traded Marshall Frappier for a 10th - a reasonable deal. That 10th ended up being Maleek McGowan - but because they nailed the pick it doesn't make the trade any better or worse. If they picked a dude that never played in the OHL it doesn't change the compensation received on the trade.

I've got no issue with criticizing trades or the drafting (and let's be real there's a lots of room to criticize the last couple years) - but I don't think it's the most accurate way to evaluate trades.

I agree with you, but the point that has to be made is that a draft pick is a draft pick. What the GM does with the pick makes the difference. You can have lots of draft picks, but if you don't know what you are doing, they really mean little.

Regarding the Wright trade were you not happy regarding the Picks/Players returned or did you feel the draft selections should have been better using those picks received for Wright?

Right out of the gates the Fronts organization would have known that Gavin McCarthy was not reporting to play in the OHL. He had already committed to Boston University and his older brother Case was already there playing alongside Hutson & Celebrini Bros.

Oh, Brother! Three Pairs of Siblings Power BU Men’s Hockey Success

Are you good with the Fronts 2024 OHL Draft where only 1 player is regularly seeing limited playing time?
You have to look a little deeper to realize the destiny of a franchise lies at the Helm and trickles downwards.

The Trade itself & Drafting players using those picks are 2 separate entities. Who the GM selects after discussing with their scouting staff decides the teams path moving forward.

I think it's both honestly, McCarthy was a longshot from day one and that's the reason there were the couple conditional picks based on him reporting. Getting what they got wasn't good, and the early returns on the draft leave a little bit to be desired

In a year like this where they're looking like they're going all in, I don't really have any issue with the lack of 16 year olds contributing - all in years need to be mostly older players. Especially considering they don't have a first, I'm not worried about this at this point. If after next year we're sitting here wondering when the contributions are going to come then yeah I'll start to get worried. I think we've already seen more from the '08s as rookies as a whole than we did from the '07s. Kelly and even Betts have contributed more (which isn't saying much) than Weir/Velliaris did last year.

Hence my post - it's too easy to look at bad drafting and say they screwed up a trade but if there were better players available - it's not a representation of the trade, it's of the drafting abilities.

The reality is the Wright trade ended up being more difficult than it should have been. If you believe the rumours, Wright would not go to Peterborough or Barrie. Ottawa would not give up Mews. The London deal fell through with either Bonk refusing to waive or London refusing to include Bonk. Sarnia had already made their big moves.

The landscape was limited at that point. Windsor had VERY limited resources including limited draft picks. Miedema was wayyy down their target players list. I think they were pretty much either looking at the Windsor trade with Miedema or an Ottawa trade for ONLY draft picks.

As much as I don’t like the Wright trade, the reality is Kingston made out about as best they could.

Also important to note how long there was talk about it and how many teams became the front runner. Cooper took his sweet time with it and as a result many gms dropped out and kingston got scraps
