They can go either way. We don’t know what their true strategy is. “IF” their strategy is to contend next year, they need to align assets in such a way as to give them the most flexibility. Draft picks in the 2024 draft 2nd round+ won’t give them players that will contribute to a Championship run next season. So, it makes sense for them to push picks forward, void themselves of ‘08s and use the 2024 picks as future trade chips. They have Barrie and NB 2nds in 2024 and no 2nds in 2025. I would try to turn both of the 2024 2nds into 2025 2nds plus future 3rds and 4ths. They would add four additional trade chips they can use at the deadline.
I agree that they should fill their OA’s early. Jump on the cluster of OAs that will float the market at the start of next season. Be aggressive. If they need ot make a deadline adjustment, so be it.
If management doesn’t intend on pushing all in, then approach the draft like any other normal year. If they can get a decent return for the NB 2nd then push it forward and add a later pick to this draft plus the 2nd next year to fill the hole they currently have. If there is no significant interest in the NB 2nd, then draft a body and call it a day.
