He looked like the real deal during the rookie tournament etc. He's going to be our right-handed Kaliyev compliment on the 4th line eventually!
Thought I'd bump this despite the WJC going on... this kid is in need of some of his own love after his showings already in tourney along with his play at Development Camp 4 months ago.
What an absolute steal at Round 5, Pick 128.
Def. the next Pavelski / Jamie Benn.
Kingston Frontenacs assistant coach Chris Longo refers to him as a silent assassin. Ivan Fenes, the head coach of Slovakia’s under-20 team, refers to him as a killer.
3 pt first period in his return to OHL. Looks like he is motivated following the WJC cancellation
Killers are what this team needs. 4pts in today's game. Can't wait for him to be developed into a bottom 6 2-way grinder.
Good luck deleting this post from my heart.Delete
So... Like Kaliyev with NHL skating and not quite the shot?
Agreed. He seems good at getting the separation and with his hands is really able to create the space/angles to get his shot off. I began just thinking he was an interesting hail mary draft pick. However I’m now very excited by him. This was a scouting report from 2020:
""Chromiak's offensive skill is obvious -- he owns an above-average shot and passing skills. With power and crafty placement, his one-timer is a legit weapon from range. Deft backhand passes through layers, and slip passes make him a set-up threat from anywhere""
Since then, he's grown to about 6'1" 200 and has more power in his skating and his first 3 steps at Kings camp last Summer was #1 among the rookies in testing. It was some test like that, I'm just calling it the first 3 steps...so he's quick. He did one of those Michigan lacrosse style goals, like it was nothing. He has great hands.
Akil Thomas was asked at this years camp "who do you think will have a breakout year, this year?" Apparently, without hesitation, he said "Martin Chromiak" This is about all I know, beyond that in the pipeline video and watching other clips on youtube. It pretty much sounds like he has a good shot and being a legit top 6 winger...in 1 to 3 years. He will either be in the AHL or NHL next year. Seems like he would start in the AHL, but you never know. He turns 2o in August, the same week Byfield and Faber turn 20 as well.
He had reduced minutes in Slovakia, and midseason went to the OHL instead.Im more interested in the real reason he dropped so far?
Thanks for the insightHe had reduced minutes in Slovakia, and midseason went to the OHL instead.
Right or wrong, players who refuse to just accept the role they are shoved in doesn't bode well in the scouting community. Plus, considering he's not physically engaging at all, people saw him as a one-dimensional player with an attitude problem.
I think his advanced stats probably counted against him. Scouching had him falling and IIRC rated him a little lower than we took him. Now, Scouching pretty, much assesses primarily on advanced stats but the teams do both them and eye test assessments. It’s also worth noting the OHL sample size will have been smaller, compared to other draftees, as he moved to North America mid season during his draft year. There will also have been a period of time where he was adjusting to being in a new country which will also have had an impact. Scouching probably did some stats from video also, of him playing in Europe, but doing it from video is less effective (trust me, I’ve done it).Im more interested in the real reason he dropped so far? He was the value pick on the board from about pick 80 at the draft and he fell another 50 places? He was everyone "I Hope they" pick from the 4th round its just baffling that he fell so much further and we basically picked him up because we had so many picks that we could afford to take a flyer on someone dropping so hard.
Ever since the pick he's only been impressive, never heard a bad word about his play.
