Thought I'd bump this despite the WJC going on... this kid is in need of some of his own love after his showings already in tourney along with his play at Development Camp 4 months ago.

What an absolute steal at Round 5, Pick 128.

Def. the next Pavelski / Jamie Benn.

Kingston Frontenacs assistant coach Chris Longo refers to him as a silent assassin. Ivan Fenes, the head coach of Slovakia’s under-20 team, refers to him as a killer.

Really the kind of thing we need this team to have happen to return to prominence--we need the blue chippers to really really really pan out (especially Byfield and Clarke), we need the A/A- prospects to take roles like Bjornfot has (Thomas, Madden, Fagemo), and we need some deep guys to really surprise us--Chromiak, maybe Lee, Parik, Spence, Jamsen, etc.

And a goalie, it hurts watching the near-miss on Wallsteadt now :(

But Chromiak going off is a step in the right direction, as is Helenius--love watching guys step up against their peers, especially when the other context is a guy like Chromiak getting the "is he THAT good?" treatment due to Wright, and Helenius' offense being discounted while he performs vs. grown men.

Killers are what this team needs. 4pts in today's game. Can't wait for him to be developed into a bottom 6 2-way grinder.

So... Like Kaliyev with NHL skating and not quite the shot?

This was a scouting report from 2020:
""Chromiak's offensive skill is obvious -- he owns an above-average shot and passing skills. With power and crafty placement, his one-timer is a legit weapon from range. Deft backhand passes through layers, and slip passes make him a set-up threat from anywhere""

Since then, he's grown to about 6'1" 200 and has more power in his skating and his first 3 steps at Kings camp last Summer was #1 among the rookies in testing. It was some test like that, I'm just calling it the first 3 steps...so he's quick. He did one of those Michigan lacrosse style goals, like it was nothing. He has great hands.
Akil Thomas was asked at this years camp "who do you think will have a breakout year, this year?" Apparently, without hesitation, he said "Martin Chromiak" This is about all I know, beyond that in the pipeline video and watching other clips on youtube. It pretty much sounds like he has a good shot and being a legit top 6 winger...in 1 to 3 years. He will either be in the AHL or NHL next year. Seems like he would start in the AHL, but you never know. He turns 2o in August, the same week Byfield and Faber turn 20 as well.

Agreed. He seems good at getting the separation and with his hands is really able to create the space/angles to get his shot off. I began just thinking he was an interesting hail mary draft pick. However I’m now very excited by him.

He will end up a great shutdown winger and will eat up those pk minutes. 😈🤭🤔😉

I like his release, there's not a lot of 'tell' in his body movements, very deceptive way to get a lot of power.

Some guys you can see crank/crook their arm a little when it's time. Kaliyev is similar. The puck comes off his blade from a ton of different places and you can barely see him lean into it. Chromiak has this same attribute, he'll make you bite, then the puck is going off your toe a different direction. It's a pro release/shot.

Im more interested in the real reason he dropped so far? He was the value pick on the board from about pick 80 at the draft and he fell another 50 places? He was everyone "I Hope they" pick from the 4th round its just baffling that he fell so much further and we basically picked him up because we had so many picks that we could afford to take a flyer on someone dropping so hard.

Ever since the pick he's only been impressive, never heard a bad word about his play.

He had reduced minutes in Slovakia, and midseason went to the OHL instead.

Right or wrong, players who refuse to just accept the role they are shoved in doesn't bode well in the scouting community. Plus, considering he's not physically engaging at all, people saw him as a one-dimensional player with an attitude problem.

Thanks for the insight

I think his advanced stats probably counted against him. Scouching had him falling and IIRC rated him a little lower than we took him. Now, Scouching pretty, much assesses primarily on advanced stats but the teams do both them and eye test assessments. It’s also worth noting the OHL sample size will have been smaller, compared to other draftees, as he moved to North America mid season during his draft year. There will also have been a period of time where he was adjusting to being in a new country which will also have had an impact. Scouching probably did some stats from video also, of him playing in Europe, but doing it from video is less effective (trust me, I’ve done it).

Complete assumption on my part, but that’s my guess.

Anyone follow him this previous season? Stats looked good, posted similar numbers to Kaliyev on his last OHL season. How did he look?
