-1 in a 5-2 win???

Canadians in the relegation round yet? I see they lost to the Germans the other day.

Sweden needs to win three out of their four remaining games and one is against GB. I think Sweden is still within the race.

Canada absolutely needs to win all of their remaining games. Three of them are against Norway, Kazakstan and Italy but the fourth is against Finland.

Oddly enough, I had a hard time finding one. But its mentioned in a few articles on IIHF's website:

IIHF - Hope springs eternal for Norway
IIHF - Kazakhs return after five-year gap
IIHF - Italy faces huge challenge

There's no lower division tournament this year, so there's no one to promote to take a relegated teams place, so they're just not doing the relegation round.

Thank you! I remember no relegation last year since nobody won, but I'm not as sharp as I used to think I was.

Yeah, by now a familiar refrain... Trevor Moore with another goal & assist this afternoon. He's now 3rd on the tournament's scorers list, and leads the tourney with 4 goals in 4 games (along with 4 other players including Timo Meier of the Sharks).

Alternate captain Matt Roy (+1) had the highest ice-time on the US team in the 4-2 win against hosts Latvia (who had beaten Canada previously). Cal Petersen had 17 saves in net.

In the 4-2 win of Canada over Kazakhstan, just completed, JAD declared Canada's best player despite only recording an assist and playing less than 11 minutes. :skeptic: Sean Walker with the second-highest ice-time on Team Canada (exactly 22 minutes), following Owen Power (over 26 minutes!). Vilardi came up empty and with a -1 once more, with only 29% of face-offs won.

It's still a long-shot for Canada to make the play-offs following the 3 losses to open the tournament, but we'll see.

Man, Vilardi needs a vacation. Kid has been through the wringer to get this far. But he didn't come this far to fall short--I have big faith in him.
I was super excited for Vilardi this season, he didn't have a strong start and definitely struggled at points throughout the year but he finished strong and showed us a glimpse of what he can do if he continues to develop. I have faith in the kid, I'm just glad he was able to play the full season after his injury troubles

And it's done. For the first time since 1992, Sweden fail to make the play-offs at the World Championships, losing 2-3 to Russia last night, following the shootout. They needed a win in regulation. At least Kempe (Adrian, because Mario is on the roster, too) converted his shootout attempt. But he also took 8 face-offs (!) and lost all of them. :skeptic: He had an assist on one of the Swedish goals, though. The decisive shootout was converted by Tarasenko, newly arrived from St. Louis.

At least Kempe himself had a good tourney, leading all Swedish players with 5 points (1 goal) in 7 games, +/-0. (Mario recorded 2 goals.)

Today, Canada can make history, too, by failing to qualify for the World Championships play-offs for the first time ever in international hockey. Not something I would wish for Vilardi, Walker, and JAD (or Kuemper, Owen Power, etc.) to happen, but it looks like they'll be entering hockey history books in this unfortunate way. The thing is, Canada no longer has this in their own hands. They first need to defeat group leader Finland in regulation, and hope for an overtime result in the Latvia vs. Germany game later tonight (both of these teams had defeated Canada earlier). If either Latvia or Germany wins in regulation, Canada doesn't make the play-offs.

Oh, and Cal Petersen delivered yet another shutout last night, defeating Germany 2-0 and recording 33 saves, with GWG by Jason Robertson. The US are comfortably in the play-offs after winning all but one game (against Finland), and in the play-offs, will face either Slovakia or Czech Rep. Slovakia are a bit of a dark horse, playing with no NHL players on their roster. Well, unless you count the likes of Bruins castoff Peter Cehlárik, currently the tourney's leading scorer (9 points and 4 goals in 6 games), along with Canadians Adam Henrique and Connor Brown (who, however, might soon be going home). The Czechs would likely be a tougher opponent for the US, with a number of NHL reinforcements such as Vrána, Zadina, Hájek and – may I be forgiven – Kubalík on their roster. (And, yep, Kubalík has been scoring game-winning goals in this venue as well.)

Sorry, I got my calculations wrong. Canada managed to advance to the play-offs after all, just barely, thanks to better H2H versus Kazakhstan, despite losing to Finland in the shootout. It's the hosts Latvia who are out along with Kazakhstan. Vilardi finally got his first point (an assist) in his 7th game at the tourney.

So, it's now the US versus Slovakia, and Canada versus Russia in the quarterfinals. The winners of these two will square off in the semifinals.
