Hmm. How many roster spots does that put us at counting Gaborik? I’m assuming someone being sent down or more?

Holy cow, Torrey Mitchell is 63% on faceoffs. Last season he was VERY good as well.

This does cause some confusion in the line-up though.

Iafallo-Kopitar-Brown
Pearson-Kempe-Toffoli
Gaborik-Mitchell-Brodzinski
Jokinen-Shore-Lewis

*Dowd, Andreoff, Laich, and then Clifford returning soon. I have a feeling Dowd will be traded in the near future..

Getting him for his faceoffs alone will help this team, especially for a very low pick.

And you have to be honest, it can't cause confusion on a very crappy bottom six. Andreoff or brod sit and you lose nothing.

Blake working on the holiday
Low risk and since Kempe is weak on face offs this give them options.

Fills a need. Happy with the move. It’ll be interesting to see who we waive.

No problem with this move. It's a nice depth piece for the bottom 6. Mitchell was serviceable when he was in Buffalo before going to the Habs.

Not a bad skater, can play some PK if need be, has a bit of jam to his game and as noted, pretty good in the face off circle.

Here's to hoping Laich exits stage left, followed by AA once Gaborik is inserted back in the lineup.

Yeah, I think the writing is on the wall for Laich. It’s a shame as he comes across well and I’d be certain he’s great in the room. Dowd and AA are probably worried too though as it would be easy enough to make a case for Laich over either one in the role of 13/14.

You could argue that for Dowd he’d be better off and more use clearing waivers and playing in Ontario. AA just sucks but Stevens seems to like him. So AA and Laich fit better in my mind as the spares and I’d send Dowd down but I think it’ll be Laich.

AA/Laich/Dowd

Then when Carter/Clifford are back we suddenly have decent depth. Iafallo and Kempe stepping up has made a huge difference, you’d send down Brodzinski and only retain one of the spares I have listed.

Blake has tinkered with things nicely without hurting us going forward.

Huh, people seem positive about this move. I came here to post "¯\_(ツ)_/¯" because all I remember of Mitchell is us abusing him repeatedly when he was with the Sharks, but turns out I just don't know shit about him.

Wow another useless player and still this organization doesn't get it.

I mean, I can't comment on his actual ability at this point, but the reason for the move seems clear enough and is being made to shore up a weakness. No one can seem to hold onto a "play responsible" spot in the bottom six.

We've tried Cammy, Laich, Jokinen and now Mitchell, hopefully our bottom six will settle down with one or two of these vet additions. Obviously injuries have played a part and some of the kids haven't really grabbed the roles, but it does feel a little like they are throwing shit at the wall hoping something will stick.

This seems like a decent cheap, low risk option. Good on the draw, mobile, savvy (from what people are saying) If this doesn't work are we going to have to pony up for a better option or ride it out until the injury brigade return?

Rosen had mentioned this was thought about going back to training camp, so maybe the injuries and bottom six play proved the impetus. But it's at least not totally reactionary, and a clear attempt (with Jokinen) to revamp the bottom six with some vets. Not many teams playing so many rookies and doing very well.

I think your comment is spot on. Mitchell is pretty lackluster at this point in his career. He can win faceoffs and that's about it. He had a decent offensive game for a fourth liner a couple of years ago, but it's all but disappeared over the past season or two.

I get the short term need. I hope it pans out. Never have been that impressed with Mitchell tho. Seems pretty meh.

Meh move, but depth that doesn't require a roster, a prospect, or a high value pick is nothing to sneeze at.

Probably won't amount to much, but most likely neither will the pick. If he can help stabilize the 4th line and win a faceoff, that's great. If not, it's no different than it currently is.
