Penner has easily been the best LW option with Richards/Carter. The guy makes one mistake and the entire fanbase crashes on top of him: he has not been bad this year at all for the most part.

This team is going nowhere in the playoffs unless he plays as well as he did in the last one.

Yes and no.

He is the best option, kind of by default. Sutter doesn't trust Toffoli to play top 6 minutes and Clifford is just woefully miscast in that role.

But he has been bad, no debating it. The fact that he is the only realistic option yet still often finds himself scratched should tell you how bad he has been.

Penner needs to get his head out of his *** if this team wants to make a run, because it's not happening with Kyle Clifford as the 2nd line LW.

I also don't think he'll be back next season, Dean said he was signing him for one more year with an option for an extension but I don't think he's earned it.

If the Kings win the Cup again and Penner kicks ass in the playoffs, I bet they re-sign him. If not, buh-bye.

He'd have to be even better than last year. Which considering he's been better this regular season than last, maybe it can happen. I wanted the Kings to fix this problem at the deadline so they wouldn't need to depend on him, but they didn't or couldn't. I guess that's the way it goes.

All things considered as long as he's signed the guy belongs in the lineup. Not in the press box.

I don't see him being resigned. We are gonna let him go and get a real second line lw.

Hopefully that change comes in the off-season. I don't think he's earned another extension from the Kings.

I think the wheels are already in motion for that, and a top 6 LW will come back draft day as part of the Bernier package. There are several EC teams that could use Bernier, Toronto for one if Luongo doesn't go there, Buffalo if they trade Miller, the Devils and the Flyers. The Flyers signed Mason to a 1 year deal as a backup, I wonder if they will buy out Bryz. I'd love to see Read playing along side Richards and Carter. I read an article the day after the Trade deadline passed from a Toronto paper and the author said 'sources close to the situation' (whoever they are) indicated that DL has a trade partner lined up but wouldn't part with Bernier until the season is over and a LW was his target on that team.

The Kings won't have the cap space to go get a "real second line lw."

That would depend on the LW and what other players would possibly be traded or moved. If Toffoli is going to come up full time, he'll go on the 1st line at RW and Brown would shift to LW. That leaves Justin Williams out in the cold.

Considering that Justin Williams makes the first line go with his hustle and tenaciousness, I don't think Dean is going to leave him out in the cold. Dean loves Williams, and he's not going to give him up because Toffoli had one good year in the AHL.

I love WIlliams and agree with your assestment of his contributions. But this is a business first and foremost and Toffoli has shown he has talent and his place is on the first line. DL indicated earlier this year that he felt TT would make the club next year, he's a top 6 player RW , and deserves that spot with Kopi. He's their future.

It's not based on TT time inthe AHL, he's a top prospect and there isn't much left in the AHL for him to prove , he needs to move up to grow and develop.
He's grown past the AHL, it's his time to shine.

Lombardi has also talked about wanting to keep the team that won together. He still hasn't gotten rid of anyone that did anything on the ice for the Kings on the way to their Cup.

Toffoli will have to take the spot away from Williams. He hasn't done that yet.

With all due respect, you're sorely mistaken if you think Lombardi is going to dump Williams for an unproven prospect. I love Toffoli, but he's not taking Williams' spot any time soon here (barring injury), especially considering Williams has two more years on his incredibly reasonable contract ($3.65 million cap hit).

Does anyone know who the best on-ice Corsi player is this season? Hint: It's not Anze Kopitar (and most certainly not Toffoli).

That means Williams positively affects his team's puck possession when he's on the ice more than anyone in the league (respectably, Muzzin and Kopitar and numbers 2 and 3).

Kopitar gets the accolades, but Williams does all the little things the go unnoticed that allows that line to be one of the most effective lines in the league. He's not getting dumped like day old milk for some hotshot prospect who has posted one good year in the minors.

Last year it was Alec Martinez, and he can't get on the ice now. You have to go to #209 to find Williams in Corsi Rel QoC, which is a much more involved and better-telling metric.

A little early in the morning to be drinking Tonelli ? :) j/k

Its afternoon for me.

Thats a pancake song from some show one of my nephews or nieces were watching. Everytime I see those pancake pictures that song pops in my head. So now Penner equals that song to me. Maybe I need a nap.

I still think the guy is key in the playoffs. I'll reiterate my earlier comments about when the game moves to the boards, Penner will become a bigger factor. When he can hit and abuse people, it's great.

I don't think he'll be resigned, though. Too much money tied up in an enigma considering the cap is going down next year. I also think we're past the days where DL would sign say a MacArthur or some such name. Though Elias will be a FA...heh.

I had a ridiculous pipe dream where Benn was lined up next to Richards and Carter (yes, in a Kings jersey). It showed me two things: one, I need to stop drinking whiskey and coffee after a certain hour and two, if we could find a great LW for that line, my goodness.

Glad I could contribute to your delirium.

I found out the show is adventuretime and its a singing dog who sings that pancake song.

Dustin plays like a dog. Its all coming together for me.

Now I know why I spend so much time on the road.
:)

Don't think TT is going back to the Monarchs as they will probably miss the playoffs anyway. Why not let the kid experience the playoffs even if it's just practice time and what not. It'd still be an invaluable experience for him moving forward.

Kings really need a big body LIKE Penner to play with Richards/Carter. Clifford has not shown he can really produce on the top 1-2 lines yet and Toffoli is a Carter clone.

I think the Kings should pursue any of these UFA's in the off season....A bigger winger who is not afraid to mix it up and is good for 10-20 goals.
