Kiefer Sherwood on pace for over 500 hits this season

Nashville should’ve stayed the course and kept him instead of signing Stamkos and Marchessault. Not offering him what Van ended up giving in a higher tax province is ridiculous. Barry Trotz is in over his head and should’ve never became gm. Congratulations to Vancouver for having competent management after almost a decade of Benning idiocy. Now it’s Nashvilles turn and it’s not looking pretty unless they properly commit to a rebuild.

42 point pace contradicts this, but doesn’t this mean the other team has the puck a lot when he’s on the ice?

Ya I notice that a lot in games … I’m always curious what they consider a hit… I’ve seen many many games where I literally see a player do 2 decent size hits in a shift and it doesn’t get counted for some reason. I’m in a hockey pool that includes hits so I notice these things during games lol

Technically, a hit is registered if the result of the body contact is the puck carrier losing possession of the puck.

I would be curious of difference, if there is, of home and away.
There is a literal definition for what is considered a hit. I know you seem to think Home teams can be biased but that is just not possible anymore.

I can't say too much more but NHL teams can't be biased any more.

Not really. He has a 53% CF% at 5v5. But the Canucks aren’t much of a possession team unless Hughes is on the ice, because the rest of the defense struggles to move the puck. So there’s a lot of back and forth possession. Tocchet also likes to dump and chase so Sherwood’s been a big factor on the forecheck.

Literally becoming my fave player on the team. Tried to get a jersey during the season tix discount meet, and none were made or avail. Seeing him wreak havoc on the canucks last yr in the playoffs, he was my one real want that was reachable. I'm so glad they signed him to a 2 yr deal. At this rate, he is going to get paid in 2yrs

He's played so well that he moved up to line 2 with Pettersson and Debrusk and he was excellent there for its short duration.

He's quick and aggressive - not just with the hits but also with the puck. He's got a rocket of a shot that he really puts everything into.

The hits are clean and within the play - a lot of finish your check hits just after the puck leaves.

He's been impressive but we'll see if this is physically sustainable for him. It's got to take a toll but he seems to relish the role - I don't think he'll stop until he's broken down.

Yeah but up until last year that was true, right?

I think the league came up with a uniform criteria last season but up until then there were huge discrepancies from team to team.

The guy is one of the most important players for the Canucks this year. All ES points, too. As others have touched on, on pace for 42 ES points and 500 hits for 1.5m a year is insane value.

The game needs more guys like him, the league is getting insanely soft.

I used to feel the same way. I did grow up watching the Broad Street Bullies.........

But now that I'm older, I want more skill and fewer guys who don't offer anything besides being physical.

Damn imagine what his numbers would be at if he was playing for the Isles!
Or Florida.

Home vs away is absolutely a consideration for stats such as hitting. No question.

Very good player. Very smart. Sneakily skilled, too. Has good hands in tight and a decent shot. Has looked pretty good alongside Pettersson and DeBrusk when he's played there.

Sherwood (one of the best hockey names?) has been a huge revelation to me this year. I remember disliking him last year in the playoffs as he was everywhere in that Canuck/Nashville series. He is a type of player s that Vancouver needs. If he hits 40+ points and 400+ hits, that would be amazing.

A hit is/was considered when the opponent lost his balance and fell to the ice.
Pretty sure they can count a clear attempt as a hit as well - without falling down.
But regular contact or Playing the body to shut down the opponent does rarely count as a hit.

It’s like counting shots - you only count the ones that is within the posts, not the ones going wide.
And you should not count the ones that clearly Would miss the net even. If the Goalie makes a save. But you count every dump play that hits the net a shot.

Ive watched quiet a few Canucks games this year and this guy stinks and is overrated. Mostly soft bumps that the home stat counter gives him his numbers. Cant skate, cant shoot the puck, cant really do anything. Canucks would have to retain on salary and add a pick for when they gotta eventually ditch this guy

The league has had defined definitions on hits for quite some time now (well before COVID). Whether or not that was advertised to the public, I have no idea.

However, the NHL does have their stats checked to ensure accuracy using consistent definitions. Again, all I can say lol

Or Florida.

There used to be an argument that could be made for this but the last 5 years or so that is no longer the case. I am sorry to disappoint you on that but the NHL has their stuff "audited" with defined parameters on what their definitions are.
