The team drafted fine with video scouting anyway. They whiffed on Zagrapan and Persson, but aside from that they didnt draft poorly.

The 10 guys taken after Zagrapan didnt have NHL careers. Only 4 out 20 taken after Persson had NHL careers.

Anyway, traditional scouting does seem to have some big drawbacks. You can see things in person you cant see in video, but does the time spent on travel, sitting through a whole game, outweigh the time lost that a guy could be using to watch more of that same player, or even different players. In the time it takes a scout to drive from London to Ottawa and watch a game, they could have watched 4.

I'll add that in the video scouting era the sabres led the league in % of high round picks that played 300+ nhl games

Pshaw, you could replace all the scouts with a couple of stats guys and you wouldn’t do worse than they have over the past decade.

The biggest drawback with the Sabres appears to be accountability. Botterill was at loss for answers when the Pegulas wanted detailed reports. It doesn't work if the scouts aren't going to games and providing accurate reports.

Doesn't matter. Fans want to pretend that the Pegulas are doing this to get better results. Fact is they don't care. What drives Terry and Kim is cutting costs.
Well, after nine years of spending to the cap limit and spending more money on hockey ops than anyone else, it’s hard not to see their point.

He talks about the Sabres starting roughly with 14:30 left with some talk about league-wide cuts sprinkled in.

He says he would pass on a job that required you to fire dozens of people as a first task, and i'm sure a lot of people carry that same sentiment. Not a price that many would be willing to pay just for a promotion -- I, for one, would have a hard time sleeping at night accepting a job like that.

Remember when the Pegulas took over and people were so worried about them being too nice and were afraid they wouldnt be willing to fire people because word was they never fired anyone in their natural gas business?

Burke's detractors will dismiss this as sour grapes but of course, he's right. Adams has no experience of any kind, like GMTM and Botterill before him, and we saw how well that all worked out.

The Pegulas are tightening up the operation, retreating into their own little trusted circle, and Adams has been a key figure in that circle for a while now.

On top of that, the Sabres are heading into a critical, hectic time period with lots of important decisions to be made.

It's hard to envision anything positive emanating from this situation.

Honestly it depends on what happens. If they bring in fresh voices just in smaller quantity but better quality it could be a good thing.

However I'm skeptical of who would want to work for this organization given the optics whether its deserved or not.

I may be in the minority but I'm going okay with it. Going the "up and coming gm" route has fallen flat. I would absolutely love hiring Futa in some capacity to offset some of the scouting losses.

This is the endgame for the Pegulas, their final shot. It is all on them now. They have their guy in place, communication can not be used as an excuse. This either works and fans are happy or it is a disaster, the losing continues, fans turn away and they have to sell the team.

People like Burke are why the Pegulas no longer trust "hockey people". The old boys club is what sold the Pegulas on Murray and Botterill. They made them sound like the second coming of Sammy Pollock. You would think that one of them would have warned the Pegulas "Tim Murray isn't housebroken" or "Jason Botterill isn't capable of doing 2 things at the same time".

Adams is going to be good or not.

Some GMs with no experience are good, some are bad.

Some that are up and comers with impressive resumes are good, some are bad.

Some with a ton of experience are good, some are bad.

some with histories of success are good, some are bad.

We don’t know s**t about Adams. For all we know he is an extremely bright guy who will surround himself with the right people and will find success. Or maybe he is a moron

We're going to surround ourselves with the best people! I think I heard that somewhere before.

We do know that he's been recruited by people that have failed on every single recruitment since 2014.
