People are mad about the words coming out of his mouth, not the lack of deadline trades. The time to re-make this roster was always the offseason.

It can also be viewed as calling out the top guys on this team. We’re where we are because they shit the bed.
I believe both this take and @Zman5778 take are reasonable interpretations and if correct are a welcome shift. But I have a hard time with the Krebs part. That sounds like he “was blocked.” He wasn’t. He isn’t a top line guy. His infatuation with his acquisitions is what worries me. Hopefully he sees that youth and running it back is not likely to improve or chances next year.

This guy is going to destroy arguably the most talented collection of prospects this team has ever had because he has no idea how to properly build a team to support them.
There's never been anything more obvious than this.

They are collecting talent. They think talent leads to winning. Which it can. But as far as I can tell, they are completely clueless on how to build a roster.

I don't even know what identity they have in mind. Out skilling everyone I guess?.

The teams that win build rosters that are built for playoff hockey. That's not the Sabres at all

Because relying on the breathless retellings and interpretations of others ain't my jam. I want to hear what the man said.
Just look at his actions. It says it all

Clearly a message needs to be sent to the roster, but that KA quote makes it sound like the only vets he would consider adding are retreads on their last leg and cheap 1-2 yr deals. He can't seriously think the youngest team in the league doesn't need (good) vets. So even though the truly significant trades he could have made are not suited for this week, but the summer, that quote hints at a mindset or plan of just running back the same guys with just the minimal additions...that are likely prospects.

See...I read it the opposite. I read it as he tried the big leader retread and it didn't work.

So anyone he brings on will be strictly to improve the team and not necessarily to bring in leadership per se.

Strike 1: Calling Byram a top pairing d-man. He isn't. He hasn't been. He MIGHT be. He's 22, he's a 2nd/3rd pairing guy with upside.
Strike 2: Something 'special' about Zemgus. Lawd. He's a 4th line winger.
Strike 3: "Part of the process", no, it's been an abject failure of a season . Not a "disappointing season", a failure.

I mean, it's just more of the same from him. No ownership, no responsibility, no plan.

Once again, he's set himself up for an important summer where he must accomplish multiple things.
I don’t think that’s the case.

In goal we’re set. On defense we’re pretty much set. Fans might want a different mix but they don’t seem to see it that way.

He really just needs to put together a 4th line and better NHL better depth. We have the returning top line. We have the returning second line center. Then Peterka, Quinn, Benson, Greenway and Krebs in the mix to fill out the middle 6 spots.

That doesn’t mean he can’t add more meaningful players. But it doesn’t look like he has a ton of work, at least nothing out of the ordinary for a typical NHL offseason.

That said, I’m sure many posters/fans have a lot more moves in mind that they feel need to happen.

I can see that. However, you have to move someone out to bring someone in. We are overflowing with young prospects and have only one older vet that can’t be moved. The comments about an extension for Gus is inconsistent with getting better vets as well. And his reported comments about Tuch also raises an alarm. If someone was offering a similar Mitts/Byram type deal but it wasn’t considered for non hockey reasons, then the Byram deal appears to be a cost shuffling move. Don’t pay Mitts. Get something. Keep everything else intact. I will need to see someone he acquired or signed lt, moved to be convinced he is looking at the roster and its holes objectively. Coaching is a whole other discussion. While it is fair to give someone benefit of the doubt, KA has not earned that in my view. He needs redemptive action to earn that back.

Not wanting to misconstrue your post. Are you saying the returning top line is good enough or are saying KA believes it is? We have a record that shows it is not. If KA believes it is, or that our second lines is or that the rest are the answer, then we are no farther ahead than we were the day he took over. Goaltending from year is never a given either.

His answer about the D was confusing. Whey pump up Joker? You have 8 NHL defensemen under team control next season. Two need to go and you need to find a 7th.

I think it's unwise to assume Levi is ready again.

This is where the bulk of the work is. To identify a matchup line, and to actually use his cap and add an impact forward. Most people will think I mean scorer. I actually want a defensive matchup center.

He also needs to not assume his prospects will be ready, because that logic bit him this year.

You could say it's not a lot, but to me, for him, it is.

the new organizational task is getting top line forwards. Skinner is washed. Tuch is a 2nd line guy. Thompson is a big question mark. Cozens is far from it.

If our best forwards are scoring 55 points we’re not gonna be that good

I'd like almost an entire new bottom 6.. id keep Girgs and Greenway in bottom 6. I'd like to see Benson bumped into top 6 but that may not be possible.

Honestly we need a top 6 center that can keep possession and not rush over the blue line and try and get around 2 or 3 guys and turn it over.
