He’s fallen in the Botterill camp of quality GMs for me personally. Lots of hope despite showing poor judgement. I see a lot of defense of his actions and decisions from fans to justify the glacial pace of the success of the organization, than I see evidence on the ice and results.
To me he’s shown he’s bad at free agency targets to fill roles on the roster, he’s shown an impatience with developing prospects and structuring his roster to do so to get the most out of the players. He’s shown he is risk averse of signing young players before they’ve shown a consistency of sustaining successful hockey, which can create a situation to handcuff the team if said players don’t pan out like expected. He’s handled the goaltending timeline structure horribly. it feels like he’s so invested in making sure his retooling moves from the previous core hits, that development be damned.
He has a lot of confidence in his coach, or is again is so focused on making sure his first official hire works, that he feels making decisions with the development of his players to rush them to the NHL level, that seems to have ignored the fact that his coach hasn’t proven he can actually develop NHL players.
His tenure here so far feels like a whole bunch of wishful thinking of a plan, and hoping something works without any concrete results to have said confidence in the wish coming true. It’s worked on a lot of fans I will say as many people want to point to an outlier of production and results has evidence of the team being on the up and up, and ignoring just how bad and inconsistent the team played showing the exact same issues for all 4 years of his time here, and with an improvement in goaltending from terrible to below average, that so many issues of the team in front of them are masked, which can lead to some fool’s gold.
