It was mind-numbing. I've beaten it to death on this board but I'll never understand it and I guarantee they'll never do it again. It was so clearly the wrong move. And I'm tired of the "well, they couldn't send him to the AHL" excuse as if that's a reason to keep a kid who's getting hemmed in and dummied every night in the NHL up all year. Like oh no, he would have gone back to the WHL, been the best D in the league and been Canada's #1 D on their WJ team? That would have been awful. Definitely keeping him in the NHL was more beneficial for his development.
I'm still indifferent on whether it would have been better to send him back to the WHL or have him take his lumps in the NHL. First off, the Blackhawks were supposed to be a better team before everyone got hurt and I think he would have had a better season if he wasn't playing with Jacob freaking Megna for half the year. (I'm sure Jacob is a very nice guy)
We'll never know if he would be better off dominating with Portland and then being the #1D on Canada in the WJC but I think we, on this board, would be so much more excited about him if he put up 100 points in juniors last year and now going into the AHL rather than watch him get his butt kicked in Chicago.
Going later into this year or next year, I would be very curious to see how he plays when he gets back into the NHL. The situation will be much better for him with a professional group of forwards in front of him who can hold onto the puck, playing 2nd or bottom pairing minutes, and a competent partner.
