Joe was never a thrilling listen for me. But he doesn’t bother me unless he says something super “homer” like. Which i can cringe to and move on from quickly.

I think Steve Valiquette should replace him in the booth. He’s by far the most informative analyst. And he doesn’t mind calling the team out on their bs. But because of that, it won’t happen.

But could you imagine if it did? We’d actually get some really great commentary.

I'll say this about Joe: this year has been "the best" he has ever had. He has relentlessly criticized the team and its performance. His criticism at times has been so telling (and so correct) that it led me to believe that he was also planning to retire, and that decision freed him up to "tell it like it is."

So, he has grown on me. And kudos to MSG management for letting him criticize the team.

I'm completely OK with KA. His voice, for some reason, has always irritated me, but I can live with it. He deserves it. Perhaps freed of Eddie Olzcyk, he will let this Ranger "flag'' fly more freely. I go back to the days when Marv Albert did games on the radio, and hockey was so inconsequential that Ranger broadcasts were only the last 10 minutes of periods one and two and all of period three. So, I've always had an attachment to the Alberts, even though Kenny's voice bugs me.

Between Albert's network commitments and his NFL gig (will he still do NFL games?), we'll see a lot of Faust. I've been impressed with what I have heard from him. Sam did NFL games for several years and missed many Sunday night Ranger broadcasts.

Things will be strange come mid-August when I begin to crave hearing Sam's voice. When that happened, I knew training camp was not far off.

One game of listening to JD shows you how bad Joe is. All Joe does is repeat the same thing over and over again. They let guys into the middle too easy. They pass too much and shoot.
 
This reaction amazes me. Kenny Albert is the best hockey announcer there is, as his father was before him. This 'I want a screeching homer' mentality mystifies me.

I don't dispute that Valiquette does great analysis, but I think that having 15 minutes to prepare for a couple of play breakdowns during intermission doesn't mean he can do it instantaneously while announcing the game. I also think his smug superior attitude is off-putting.
 
I think we're also gonna see a bit more "unshackled" Kenny than we have in previous years on PbP. He's the primary guy now, following up an absolute legend. He's got a chance to cement his spot in history with the Rangers.

Because he has already been here since 1995, he's only 11 years away from tying Sam at 40 years broadcasting the Rangers.
 
Kenny's voice is pure nostalgic hockey. Sounds like I'm watching a game in black and white and there is still only 6 teams but expansion rumors are swirling. (Time is a flat circle and War never changes)

I like Kenny's and I like when the PBP guy calls the game mostly. I imagine that will change now though. Gotta chit chat and talk about who you spoke to this morning and what someone needs to do. TV is different from radio, and not always in a good way.

yes I agree on that front but having to listen to the play by play is brutal. I hated it when he did playoff games

Albert is certainly a pro, but his personality since he could talk (he got his first mic and recorder when he was 5 years old) has been play by play. I just wish he had decided to develop a sense of humor first.

Very classy to announce it after the season & not take the spotlight away from Sam.

He had a good run here. I actually liked him better on national games, but he did well filling JD's shoes. As best as could be expected.

Enjoy retirement, Joe.

Not only does he look it, but he IS the nicest guy ever. Gem of a person, and exceptional as our studio host and between the benches.

EDIT: lol, shows you how brain fried I am, I didn't realize that I already responded to this a couple weeks ago ^^^ :laugh:. Or, maybe it's actually a testament to how great John G actually is, that I felt the need to post twice!

we were pretty lucky to have Joe. he wasn't super great but there's a lot worse out there. he never really annoyed me and that's all you can ask for.

Yeah Joe was really good. I know some people complained that he said the same thing too frequently (to me it was endearing), but he was genuinely knowledgeable and not afraid to be critical when the situation warranted it. When you watch a lot of the other guys around the league you realize how good Joe was at the job.

And yes, classy move by him to wait until well after Sam got to take his victory lap.
