Who the f*** is Sheldon Keefe and what has he accomplished in this league for him to respond like that? I guarantee that won’t go over well in the lockeroom. Kid is answering questions and saying the team needs to play with a playoff mentality and fight and when you’re told of his comments you call him out like that? Horrible.

Sheldo proving he’s again in over his head and can’t handle the stress. Toronto part deux.

Kovacevic kid gives a decent answer to a reporter showing his desire and commitment about what the Devils need to do with tangible actions and mental attitudes and Keefe blurts out “play better” to one single player.

He was mad because the reporter was holding him up from being able to get to the post game buffet.

How about coach better you fat bastard.

Keefe is being unnecessarily hostile here.

Kovacevic says they need to have a playoff mentality going down the stretch. Nothing wrong with that comment, the season is winding down and the Devils are in a playoff spot.

Keefe decides to use that opportunity to take a personal shot at Kovacevic's performance.

It can be somewhat justified (although still wrong) if Kovacevic said the team sucked, or the coach sucks, or made a negative comment about the team in which case Keefe's comment would basically be saying worry about yourself. But he didn't, he said the team needs to have a playoff mentality which is a generic comment that every player makes all the time and Keefe took it as a chance to criticize Kovacevic's play. Keefe clearly has issues with the player but there's no reason to bring it up to the media.

He could have just said Kovacevic is right and we need to play better. If he's still pissed at Kovacevic, go in the locker room and talk to him away from the cameras. The media feeds into this. Now they're going to be asking Kovacevic what he thinks about Keefe calling him out and he has to (hopefully) be the bigger man and put out the fire his coach unnecessarily started. If he responds with a shot back at Keefe, now this becomes an ongoing story until one of them leave the team or acts like the bigger man.

I wonder if Keefe took this (somehow) as a direct shot at his coaching of the team.

It’s so out of nowhere with a seemingly innocuous comment from a player that it makes me wonder if behind the scenes these two have bumped heads over the direction of the team on the ice.

He's the coach of the New Jersey Devils, and with the fourth-best winning percentage among all active NHL coaches.

Right or wrong, thats who Sheldon Keefe is. He has the right to speak his mind, even if he is likely wrong and out-of-line on this one.

Sheldon Keefe after losing his 3rd straight playoff series gleamed in the post-game conference about getting respect in the handshake line. Don't expect anything from this goof, he is a loser.

Sure seems like he took offense to it. Keefe seems like he has a big but fragile ego.

Everyone has the right to say anything they want. Doesn’t make it right. Winning percentages in the regular season are great but where’s his hardware? Any conference championships? How much playoff success? Any Olympics international success?

I promise you that response isn’t going to go over well in the lockeroom. There’s a way to do things and say things to hold players accountable. That was not the way you do it!

5th highest pt% for coaches all time (min 200 games)... complain about his playoff record if you want, but it isn't like he has no clue how to win in the league.

Devils were a sub .500 team last year and well out of a playoff spot, they are comfortably in one right now.

Don't disagree with it being a little bit pissy, but people praise Torts for this sort of thing all the time.

It always amazes me how some people can take that quote as meaning anything other than it was a hard-fought series and they played well...

Sometimes you can be happy with your performance and still be disappointed with the results.

Torts has won a Stanley cup and has over 20 years coaching in the NHL including international tournaments. And if Torts did this in the exact same manner I would also have a problem with it to be fair. There’s ways to do it. Not like this. Especially from a coach that hasn’t accomplished much in this league

His point % is a pretty big accomplishment

He has also improved the Devils' season this year

Again, I think we both think it is kind of a pissy response and not needed, but people will pretend he is a bad coach because he doesn't have a lot of playoff success and in the same breath think Brind'Amour is a good one

Kovacevic has cost us games recently and people here clearly haven't seen it. He had a horrible icing that lost us the game in Dallas and last game he half assed tried to clear a puck up the middle of the ice vs Calgary that turned into the game winning goal for Calgary. He also sucked in Pittsburgh last weekend and wasn't great last night either.

So yeah him yapping about having to play like a playoff mindset when he was just given a 20 million dollar contract extension and is costing us points is laughable. Have no issues with what Keefe said.

Keefe just needs to coach better by not giving Markstrom starts to flush two points like he did against the Pens, Flames and almost definitely will tomorrow night against the Canucks.

One icing lost the game?

Wow, that must have been quite the boring game since nothing else happened.

Wayne Gretzky has more points than anyone will ever score and he was a terrible coach.

Jon Cooper never played professionally and has won numerous Cups.

Games played has no correlation to coaching success.
I'm just saying Keefe could've also played better in his career which he couldn't match the level so I think he should be more understanding.
