If Sens continue to suck and DRW succeed in prolonging the streak (don't tank), I would wait with open arms for EK to reach UFA. We will shed a lot of costly contracts by that time and Larkin/Mrazek would be a good core looking for a 1D.

Hilarious. The Sens are gonna be better than the Wings for the foreseeable future IMO. And if not better, then in the exact same position. Why in the world would Karlsson go to Detroit? Answer: ....he wouldn't?

would like to see them make playoffs this season. Always fun to follow a team from the east. I see your points but I don't know how its all going to shake out. Guess it all depends how his last contract season goes.

Probably. I don't see him leaving at all. Maybe I'm just being naive, but he's a star, he's the guy they're building around (with Stone) and he apparently loves it here - plus Alfie's a guy that he's always looked up to. Melnyk has always stepped up and he knows Karlsson's the guy the team's marketed around, especially with the new arena coming downtown. He'll pay and Karlsson will accept IMO.

What serious cup contender will have 10+ mil in free cap space per over 6-8 years when he is up? Would be very surprised if he didn't re-sign in Ottawa at a reasonable rate.....the city has been amazing to him and he really seems to enjoy it here.

to those of you saying that if he wants a cup, he'll take under 10 million, the only way that's accurate is if it's with another team. the only reason Ottawa even gets a sniff at the playoffs is EK, he's that big of difference maker. But, if a cup is what he wants, he's going to have to find a better team. Ottawa just isn't built for it, they aren't close, they aren't bad enough, due to EK, to get the high end picks in the draft. So, if EK does take less (8 to 9 million per) to stat in Ottawa, it's more about him liking his team and the city than it is about winning a cup. I could see this happening, Ottawa seems like a nice place to live, I guess we'll see in 2 to 3 years.

To me, he should be getting 11 million plus, he's unreal.

It would be at most 7 years if any team other than Ottawa signs him.

Came here thinking this would be a thread just made for the anti Karlsson group to show up and say he is worth nothing because he can't defend.

Sometimes HF surprises me.

As for UFA, he would probably be the highest paid dman in the league. Like it or not players get paid in their UFA years and being an elite dman guarantees him top dollar.

Doughty is a UFA the same year. The Kings may want an upgrade by then :sarcasm:

This is obviously baseless speculation, but I really think Eugene Melnyk submitting to Alfie and bringing him back into the organization after Alfie left him and completely embarrassed him is because anybody with half a brain can put together that giving Alfie a big spot in the organization is the best thing the Sens can do other than winning to ensure that Karlsson re-signs. This isn't to say Alfie wasn't already on track to get an off ice role with the Sens when he retired before he left for Detroit, but it seems very out of character for Melnyk to bring him back and forgive him after what transpired.

In today's NHL, if Karlsson wants to play ball with Ottawa, I think you're looking at 9.5M or 10.5Mx8 years with the first few years being in the 12M-13M salary range. If Karlsson wants to go YOLO and swim in pools of money, the sky is the limit for what he could get in free agency. His ability to improve a team when he is on the ice and absolutely dominate could be very tempting for any team with the cap space. He's also a very marketable player, which is something the Senators have failed to capitalize on.

I don't think this works at all, but if I'm the Senators, I try to negotiate a deal that is backloaded rather than front loaded in order to push off his big earning years until the downtown arena is constructed. Because the Sens aren't a cap team but are a budget team, this allows them a better opportunity to compete now while kicking the can down the road. Obviously if he does this, he'd probably want a full NTC which is something he'd get anyways.

People can quote me on this

It will of course depend on the salary cap, but I don't see Karlsson taking more than 12% of the C.H.%.

Currently, he takes 8.90% of the C.H.%, and he took 10.83% when he signed the deal in 2012-13

It will be close to 10.0 per year. The Sens will get him under contract for 8 years, for about 80 millions

Don't even joke about that.

Talk about twisting the dagger into the heart of Sens fans.

lol if that happens, they will probably just accept that the team has to be relocated.

The Sens will not let EK get to UFA, you don't just let the best player on the planet walk for nothing. He will be extended, bank on it.

However, in your fantasy scenario, as of now, you don't have much to surround him with beyone the 2 players you mentioned, certainly not if you succeed in staying in or near the playoffs every year, as you will not have any high picks to surround EK with.

What leverage do you have to resign him? It's not like you're Tampa that reached conference finals 2 last years. Maybe you can get profit from him by selling him as a rental in the last year :D

I believe that our drafting is good enough to bring in supporting cast and we can still sign some veteran UFAs like Nielsen if needed. We can also ask some of our vets to convince undrafted players from KHL to come over. We lucked out with Larkin but our scouts can't guess which D to draft. Maybe Cholowski can be the guy but I wouldn't bet on it. There's a big Karlsson-shaped hole in our defense and I know a guy who would fill it perfectly.

How about you reach the playoffs first?

He would go to Detroit because he won't have much choice. Cup contenders won't have cap space, awful teams won't help him win the cup. It's the bubble teams that would fight for him and I believe we can be competitive between them.

Also we can try to make our Swedish players to stalk him until he caves in, ask Lidström to promote us, make the Detroit mayor give him the keys of the city - going full Toronto can't hurt :sarcasm:
