If Detroit wasn't bloated with ugly contracts, I'd be happy to see him get $12M and wouldn't think twice. Offensively, I wouldn't be surprised if he's a top 5 defenseman in the NHL for any and all of the next 5 years.

Are you saying you would not be surprised if Karlsson was a top 5 offensive D for each of the next 5 seasons? I would be surprised if he was NOT a top 5 offensive D for any of the next 5 seasons (unless injury)

If the owner doesnt open his wallet for a run, then i hope EK leaves that misery! He signs 2x 7 with a contender and gets a ring!

After that he signs a lifelong contract with the senators and will be in their management after his career!

He'll get whatever he wants. But i think he'll stay loyal to Ottawa and sign a fair contract 8Mil or so. Similar to Steven Stamkos.

He has a whole team built around him. His best friend is part of our management group. He's the captain. Ottawas been fair to him, he'll be fair back

Stamkos has a decent chance for a cup in TB , also coming off a nasty injury
lowered his production and value a little .

Ottawa would be lucky to sign EK for 9x8

Crosby settled on 8.700/year and could have easily gotten more.
Karlsson settled for 6.500/year and he could also have easily gotten more.

I think he might go for $65,000,000 total. That would leave one of the following possibilities:
5 years: 13.000/year
6 years: 10.833/year
7 years: 9.286/year
8 years: 8.125/year

People are saying 12.000 but he really doesnt strike me as someone who will do that. He strikes me as someone who will take a discount to win. Even if it's not with Ottawa.

Trust me... he will be ask to take a discount... I'm not saying that he will but it may play a huge factor on this team what kind of budget management willl have for him

I could see him signing a deal much like that. And it would be a fair deal for both the player and the team.

He will resign somewhere else besides Ottawa. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of the Sens but look at where their roster will be in three seasons and the age of a majority of the key players and the goaltending situation. He will be looking to go to a cup contender and Ottawa would be stupid if they actually wanted to keep him and asked him to take a discount.......I don't think he would take one after he saw them burn Alfie on his discount deal.

Having Alfie as part of Ottawa's management gives them a huge advantage. He'll stay, like all other pending free agents that have stayed in Ottawa recently.

lets be honest. he wont stay if they aren't cup contenders. he will be 30ish at that point and lets look at the roster in his UFA season. it is going to be a very mature roster with only a few good prospects coming down the pipes (imo).

Ryan 32
MacArther 34
Brassard 33 UFA same time
Turris 30 also UFA at 29...who knows what Kurt Overhardt will want or do. (dislike due to trouba situation lol).
Dion 34
Methot 34
Anderson 38 but UFA at 37 so probably not resigned.
Hammond 31 but UFA at 30. Not sure if resigned.

players that may be in their prime

JGP
Stone
Ceci
Chabot
L.Brown
Lazar

G - Driedger. haven't watched him play net though. not sure what he will be like eventually.

Obviously there is FA pickups and the next few drafts which may acquire some talent as well.

I don't know, I just personally don't see him staying with Ottawa based on the direction they are headed. Seems like they are just staying the course of mediocrity and not really rebuilding at all for players that are again. Just my opinion though so take it with a grain of salt and don't be offended.

There's little point in trying to look at what'll happen in a year, let alone what'll happen in 3 years. The core of the group will all be in their prime years (30ish) at that point, including Stone, Hoffman, Ceci, Pageau, Turris. Brassard and Ryan will be in their early 30s, Dion and Methot will be the veterans, then you have Brown, White, Perron, Chabot, Englund etc. The Sens are always quietly stocked well in prospects from great draftly.

Plus, finding a replacement for Anderson isn't as hard as it's made out to be. There are always options via trade and free agency.

Then you go the other route and say that if he wanted to go to a Chicago etc., they'll likely be squeezed up against the cap and wouldn't be able to afford him and in this intense parity of a league, one team can go from decent to Cup contender in a year or two.

I think the chance of him leaving retired with Bryan Murray. Everyone loves Bryan, but we needed a fresh voice to come in and pull the bandaids off if need be (Zibanejad for Brassard for example). This team is one the huge upswing, and Karlsson sees it, obviously.

If Sens continue to suck and DRW succeed in prolonging the streak (don't tank), I would wait with open arms for EK to reach UFA. We will shed a lot of costly contracts by that time and Larkin/Mrazek would be a good core looking for a 1D.

The Sens will not let EK get to UFA, you don't just let the best player on the planet walk for nothing. He will be extended, bank on it.

However, in your fantasy scenario, as of now, you don't have much to surround him with beyone the 2 players you mentioned, certainly not if you succeed in staying in or near the playoffs every year, as you will not have any high picks to surround EK with.

would like to see them make playoffs this season. Always fun to follow a team from the east. I see your points but I don't know how its all going to shake out. Guess it all depends how his last contract season goes.
