Cap goes up say 4-6 mill to 77-79 mill in 2019, Karlsson scores 70-85 points this season and the next two seasons of his contract.
UFA at 29, how much would he get as a UFA?

Whatever the max is, at least one team would feel justified in giving it to him.

Whatever he wants pretty much, could see him just taking 11 or 12 mill a year though.

Ottawa is a budget team but they'll give him whatever he wants. The question actually will be if the team around him at the time is something he wants to be part of.

I'd say the floor is around $10M x 8 years, but that can go higher by 2-3 million depending on his performance in the upcoming seasons.

11-13 depending on where the cap stands at that point.

Floor will be 8 figures.

Factors to consider are his health. If that is still good, then sky is the limit.

Mcdavid will be on his second contract by then so I would guess karlsson will see what kind if cap hit mcdavid takes and go from there.

Karlsson is the best offensive blue liner in the game.

Crosby after his elc had the highest cap hit at $8.7 for guys on single digit term contracts. Ovy opted to go long term and do 13 years at $9.5.

Si, if mcdavid goes for the max of say $16 million, then EK could be in the $12 range. I suspect mcdavid like Crosby won't be at the 20% max. Think his will be $12 in his next deal, but could be higher depending on number if Ufa years.

Might not be the Sens but I'd bet that at least one team is willing to match McDavid's money for a shot at EK. Once you get to generational players, the sky really is the limit. McDavid is the new Crosby, but there really isn't an existing comparable for Karlsson that's currently playing.

I don't think EK will get that much. At that point in time at age 29, EK is going to be thinking about winning a cup. I don't think he will get one during this contact with the senators.

Remember, even if you factor out the low years on Sid's deal, it would be a cap hit of $10.6 million per over 9 years and the cap during year one of his deal was $64.3 million. So, it was 16.4% of the cap. He needed a deal woeth $12.86 million per year to hit 20%.

But I think EK will use mcdavids deal as the bar to set his price.

If he keeps up similar production, Karlsson will be given a blank cheque by a number of teams. He probably will be given a blank cheque even if his production tails off a bit. Notice how much teams have to give up to trade for top pairing right defencemen? Teams would pay what it takes to get the biggest UFA defenceman on the market in years.

If Karlsson wants to win a cup, he is going to have to accept taking less money.

Enough to cripple any team he signs with.

If Karlsson wants to win a cup, he is going to have to accept taking less money.

This.

If Karlsson signs for more than $10m a season, he'll never win a cup.

If Ottawa doesn't re-sign him though (I don't see why they don't, even if his demands are insane, he's worth more to the team) I agree that some team will throw stupid money at him, not sure max cap hit though.

Simple : 3 words : Whatever he wants. People like to call Melnyk cheap, but he's proven that he'll pony up to keep our good young core players. And to keep the best player in the world (yeah, I said it), you pay whatever he wants. That said, EK is happy in Ottawa, and the team is on the upswing. And the Brassard trade was made in part to prove to EK that we will do whatever we can to start winning now. EK doesn't strike me as a selfish player at all, and he's smart enough to know that he would have to take a bit less than he could get as a UFA in order to have a good team around him, so I think he'll re-sign with Ottawa for a lucrative, but fair deal. Not to mention that his best friend and mentor, Daniel Alfredsson, works with the Sens, and will be a factor in EK's decision too I'm sure.

He can get the max. Needs to take a somewhat okay deal if he wants to win a cup as anything other than the old guy on a contender in 12 years

Floor is 10 million. I'd be shocked if he didn't get 12.

At 29 i dont think he will get that much. Most likely his offensive production will decrease and he isnt that good defensively. But some team will probably overpay.

If Detroit wasn't bloated with ugly contracts, I'd be happy to see him get $12M and wouldn't think twice. Offensively, I wouldn't be surprised if he's a top 5 defenseman in the NHL for any and all of the next 5 years.
