I’m a Kings fan and watched MN beat the Oilers in ‘23, in MN. Kaprisov was the best player on the ice and outworked the big two by some distance. I was disappointed as I was looking forward to seeing McDrai as it may be my only chance (I’m in the UK) but Kaprisov was box office. I should emphasise I’m talking about a specific game. I’m not saying he’s better that McDavid…
Wild are well known Oiler killers, even when EDM is playing well, like last year.

Kaprizov is a great watch. Next thing he has to do is lead his team to playoff wins, but it might not happen until next year, when MN's 14M cap penalty is off the books. That 14M could buy a couple of nice FA's, which could make all the difference in their success.

He's off to a roaring start with his team's usual playoff-like intensity in the regular season, but statistically the only significant difference this year in his individual and team on-ice shooting percentage. His possession stats are the usual spot just over 50%. His shots on goal are actually well down from the past three years. He's making great plays and that helps the shooting percentage, but what he's doing will fade at some point this season.

His hot start is probably the worst case scenario for us as a franchise. If you believe he's the guy to keep for the long-term, and he wants to stay, his price is skyrocketing. Could be the dangerous contract year bump happening right now.
lol.

Can’t think of much worse for any team than someone playing like bonafide top 10 player, potentially top 5. How awful.

That being said, I think he has propelled himself into the conversation for best winger in the game now. I have him second behind Kucherov.

Where did you have him before that? Because he's been in that conversation as much as anyone else not named Kucherov has for several years. Looking at guys like Panarin, Rantanen, Pastrnak, he's been in that tier since 2021.

Behind Tkachuk and Pastrnak definitely. Maybe Rantanen also.

I wonder what the Wild does next year. Kaprizov taking another step forward this year and the Wild finally get some cap space to work with after the Parise-Suter contracts. 13 millions extra on a team that looks good this year can really fill some of the weaknesses in their rooster. Next year might be one of their best shots as kaprizov will be on the last year of his contract.

We won't be able to do much, unfortunately, since Guerin already signed too many aging vets to long-term deals. Faber's extension soaks up one of the two buyout savings, and there's very little deadweight money coming off the books. Deadweight like Johansson is counteracting by Rossi being an RFA. If Kaprizov wants to stay and is his guy, Guerin can't add much long-term since they have to budget for Kaprizov's new deal and any potential prospect growth. He can add some 1-year deals for next year, but that's about it. This is basically the team for the foreseeable future. It's sad to see how mismanaged it's been with a star in Kaprizov in his prime.

They're probably going to start their offer at ~$13M per year, which would essentially be giving him Zuccarello's expiring number, which would then (hopefully) be filled by an ELC (Heidt), so would be minimal effect, aside from whatever downgrade it is from Zuccarello to his replacement.

Now, if he holds out for more than Draisaitl, it'll be an inconvenience but not a major one.

The first year of his new deal, even if it's $15M per year, we'd have ~$17M in space on a $95.5M cap, with the only roster unknowns being 1) whatever Rossi's 2nd contract is, 2) another top 6/middle 6 player, and 3) whatever we do with the other goalie spot besides Wallstedt. If we go ELC with #2, that's plenty of room to handle #1 and #3 ($7M apiece, if necessary).

All of Yurov, Buium and Ohgren are slated to be on ELCs that year, and then guys like Spurgeon will start dropping off the cap.

As far as next year goes, we have ~$13M to re-sign Rossi, Khusnutdinov and replace Johansson. Depending on if they bridge or go long-term with Rossi, that could somewhere in the $5M to $7M range for the Johansson replacement. Judging by last summer's signings, that's guys like Marchessault, Teravainen, Bertuzzi, Toffoli, etc. Decent options.

He doesn't get enough respect. While everyone fauns over Mackinnon
I mean, they aren't in the same tier at all. Mackinnon has consistently been a hart trophy threat since 2018 and has basically been the 2nd best player in the world for the last 7 years.

Kaprizov is awesome, but he's just not on that level yet and may never be. You can't seriously be mad or surprised that Nathan mackinnon gets more attention than Kaprizov

We all know why. 🍁
Seriously? Or is it because MacKinnon has simply been consistently better? Mack top 8 in scoring in 6 of the last 7 seasons with the only miss being the year he missed 17 games. Kaprisov has only been a top 10 scorer once. No knock on Kaprisov, he’s a great player, simply suggesting MacKinnon has earned the additional fawning.

Kaprizov? He is better than them.
Debatable.

Pastrnak has finished 3rd in scoring twice, has a rocket Richard, and was a runner up to the hart trophy (a year he would have won if not for McDavid's insane 2022-23 season)

Kaprizov has yet to accomplish anything close to that. If he keeps up his pace this year, that would be the first time he's done anything resembling Pastrnak's best years.

I would say he is better than Kucherov now.
Saying he's better than the only player to beat a healthy McDavid not once, but twice, is absurd.

Kucherov has multiple full seasons of what Kaprizov is doing right now in 14 or so games.

Kaprizov has a long ways to go to even touch Kucherov. Maybe 2 seasons of a full season of his current pace then we can start comparing peaks, but Kucherov would still have the prime edge.

I knew this would be the reaction. Kaprisov out scored Mackinnon in the 2 seasons prior to last year, on a goals per game basis. And got 108 points in 21/22 while Mack got 88.

Mack was a minus player for 3 of his first 4 seasons. Kaprisov has never been a minus player

Casually leaving out the fact that MacKinnon only played 65 games in 21/22 right?

Kaprizov played 67 games in 22-23 and managed a whopping 75 points...

They're not even in the same tier. Don't kid yourself.

Since apparently you seem to think +/- is an actual useful stat you 'd see that MacKinnon is +108 since 20-21 compared to +76, which means nothing to me but apparently it does to you sooo

Also you really going to compare an 18 year old MacKinnon playing in his first year to a Kaprizov coming over to the NHL as a grown man lmao?
