Now do hardware and hart finishes
If your argument is that individual trophies matter most, you might well have PK Subban as a better player than Brad Park, Jay Pandolfo as a better player than Mikko Koivu, Taylor Hall as a better player than Pat LaFontaine, and Jim Carey as a better goalie than... well, take your pick on that one.

I think it's safer to consider that individual awards are often more based on a combination of awareness, hype, and talent than talent alone.

I am (or maybe was) of the opinion that Matthews was clearly ahead of Kaprizov until midway through last year, when Kaprizov really picked it up. Now? I think Kaprizov's been better in the time since, and I have no idea what will happen from now into the future; might go either way.

Taylor Hall was a 1 off. Matthews has multiple seasons better than Kaprizovs lone 7th place finish.

Yeah, we're not in disagreement on that, I just think the measuring stick you presented is measuring the wrong thing (the Richard trophies aside).

I will say that Kaprizov has pretty clearly played himself into that same stratosphere (or maybe exosphere, with these guys) in the last calendar year.

The recency bias in this thread is wild
Ahhh! I see what you did there.

Yeah whats crazy is kap has always been the one guy you have to cover on the wild and still dominated. Boldy/faber now helps and we see the results

Held scoreless(but still tied for the league lead), which knocks his pace down to a more reasonable 126. Would be surprised if that ends up being enough to win the Ross. Strange how top end scoring has taken a bit of dive this year after what we saw the previous two seasons...

I think he’s more of a Hart candidate than a Ross. They’ll still probably give it to McDavid even though he’ll have draisaitl like 5 points behind him.

I will say something pretty wild for where this thread is currently going but Kap is still career wise not as good not only as Mcdavid but also Kucherov or Draisaitl. He's a borderline top-7-8 player though which is still great.

I mean this is pretty obvious to me. Its too small a sample to be putting him up there with McDavid etc. Since the start of last season hes 8th in production and over the past 2 seasons hes 14th. Early last season Jack Hughes and then Pettersson had big leads on the field and there were posts about how ascendant they were. Neither panned out as a real ascension, both getting injured/slowing off by the end. Kucherov ended last season with 144 points, which is a higher rate than Kaprizov has gone this season.

Its not an insult to say Kaprizov is in that 2nd tier of star forward with Marner, Panarin, Tkachuk, Pettersson, etc, but hasnt been at the top enough to be a top 5 guy overall. If he finishes the season around his current pace, then we got ourselves a conversation for sure. Right now hes all over the ice and dominating the way a McDavid or Mackinnon etc does, constantly buzzing, but hes gotta keep it going for longer to be in those convos. At the present MOMENT hes the best there is, but thats over a short time frame.

Kaprisov is going to get blasted, waxed, shredded by the time game 70 rolls around in the scoring race. All these guys actually claiming Kaprisov to be in the same realm as McDavid, Drai, Mack, etc will go back to second pickings the minute things get serious.

Necas is a 95-100 point player. He isn't a 130,140,150 point one too.

Put the flags down man.

We'll see how good Kaprizov is now that he is surrounded by a better team and seems to be healthy. He's had an unusual career path -- entering the league later than most elite players and during an odd time due to COVID.

Hasn't been surrounded by much talent until this season. Still, managed to put up 7 goals in 6 games in the '22 playoffs and has a career regular season shooting PCT over 16%.

Not a big enough sample size to say where he falls in the pecking order. Stats aside, I agree with @kp61c that Kaprizov is second only to McDavid in how dynamic he looks on the ice.

I'm obviously cheering for the unsustainble Necas run to win it. BUT I'm also an Oiler fan and think it's Connor's to lose.

the only player that looks more dynamic on ice than kaprizov now is mcdavid.

Kaprizov is damn good and terrificly entertaining, but I'd say Makar, Kucherov, and a few others have a legitimate claim here, depending slightly on what you mean by "dynamic".

I don't know why you all act surprised over here. It was quite clear to me before the start of the season that the Art Ross race would be between Kaprizov and Necas.

Not surprised at all.

I think most of us had that feeling that Necas and Kaprizov are going to win the Art Ross this season. A rather predictable outcome, I must admit

For whatever reason, NHL.com’s numbers are out of date by a few days.

Here’s the current qualified PPG leaders:

The lead is getting chipped away.
