I haven’t watched Kadri play for a long time. I will reevaluate when we play against Flames, but he was a lot of heart when he was here, with some retention I wouldn’t mind welcoming him back if he can still skate and play.

Naz at 5M per for 5 years for Robertson + Niemela + Florida 2nd

4.5m-5m and they need to take back Kampf, Robertson, Reaves

I don't know what the rest of the mix would be like but the above framework gets me started.

I doubt it happens as it seems like Shanahan wanted him gone. Who knows though, maybe they think he's matured and the current GM clearly likes him and values guys with SC experience even in smaller roles (OEL, Stolarz, and Lorentz.)

His term is bad. The last couple years will probably be ugly. I don't think Calgary would have to retain half though. 25% puts the contract at 5.25M. With a rising cap that's really not bad for a 2/3 C for the next few years.

I would gladly take Kadri over Jarnkrok (2.1) and Kampf (2.4) for example. Then waive Reaves.

no, I don't see how it would work. Calgary or someone would have to eat half of his annual contract.

Better options out there.

Are there?

Sam Bennett, if he makes it to UFA, is probably looking at a $7.5m x 7 type deal.

Who would you rather have as a 2nd line centre behind Matthews? A guy with a career high of 49 points? or a guy who's put up 87 and 75? Even at full $.

4 years remaining at that cap hit is far from ideal given his age, but he's been an extremely durable player the last few years. In the past 4 full seasons, he's missed 11 games.

Sam Bennett hasn't played a full season in like 8 years.

Yeah, in a perfect world, you'd get Calgary to eat some money, but with a 4 year deal, they're going to be very apprehensive to do so.. and it also doesn't really "help" get a deal done this year unless they're retaining close to 50% of it so that you can do a Kampf + something swap to make it work cap-wise.

To get Calgary to do that, you're probably looking at Easton Cowan going the other way, plus then some.

Not a chance lol. Not only is it a horrible idea, but it would never happen under Shanahan, especially with Kadri still unable to accept responsibility for his own actions.

The problem with Kadri is exactly what you are saying. He is starting to slow down and is exactly the same age as Tavares. Over the last half year, Tavares has scored more goals and points, has been better defensively, is one of the best face off guys in hockey and could be signed to a cheaper team friendly deal without giving up assets....and that's just the guy in front of us at the moment.

Loved Kadri and hated when he left but not a fan of grabbing an aging guy in the middle of a decently big contract.

Considering they lost in the first round another four times in the five years since Kadri was traded, including to an older shittier Bruins team, I find it very hard to blame him for those losses to Boston.

Not sure why everyone is so fixated on his contract. It's only four more years. The Leafs just signed an even older Chris Tanev for six years into his forties.

Having Kadri around until he's thirty seven doesn't seem like a big deal by comparison.

The Leafs essentially chose Tavares over this Stanley Cup winning champion. So hard to believe they went with Captain No-Show. The rub of it is how much less Kadri has earned.

For a cup contending team up against the cap every dollar counts.

The Leafs could have had a thirty goal scoring second line centre on a sweetheart deal if they had played their cards right. Extremely popular with the greatest fan base in the world Kadri is probably my second favourite ex-Leafs player after Hyman from this iteration of the team. He's still a quality player who can produce in the playoffs when it matters most.

If he's not suspended that is.

Would require double retention and of course willingness of the flames to agree to that in the first place. Unlikely

What Free Agents are coming up that you would have a respectable chance with is how you go about this.

Not to mention if they are retaining half I'm Sure Timmy Lil would be better to have as trade bate. If it's a mid round 3rd the want lots of players they could call on.

Any number of intangibles could make it happen, but I think the likelihood of an ideal situation arising between our clubs is unlikely.

I didn't like that we traded him when we did. What impact would he have now and the price to reacquire him are all obvious important considerations.

I would rather see us pursuing pieces like Danault and Kempe. Obviously, there would be primary pieces to consider moving, but I think short of modest pieces moving for Kadri, I wouldn't be inclined to move mountains for him, as much as I liked him when he was here.

Your point is factual. I was just being difficult. Matthews only being 25, possibly 26 now I think he will have 5-8 really good years left.

Nylander rarely has any physical drama so as long as he can skate and shoot he should be PPG throughout the contract. Marner too, but I can't get a read on if they plan on bringing him back.

Matthews is 27. Just looks older.
