It won't happen IMO

His contract is long, he's looked good so far in it but it is 3 more years after this one. That is the matthews contract, after that we most likely see drop offs from MM, AM, WN, MR, and others. So Kadri would need to be expected to stay at a 55-75 point level until he is 38...I don't believe he will

Secondly, I don't think calgary deals him for nothing. He is a long contract sure, but is a good player and a good veteran leader for the team. They'll be keeping him for the contract term IMO

maybe a 4C job at the end of 28-29 but I highly doubt it, the ship has sailed on Kadri....sucks but it is what it is

He is, what, a 34 year old or so forward making $7M a year until 2030? How would the cash strapped Leafs even take that back? Is Marner or JT going to wave their NTC?

I liked him when he was here. I don't think that is a prudent contract to have at this juncture.

Why wshould we expect to see drop offs from Matthews?

Kuch just had a 144 point season at 30.

With the shape these guys are in these days, it should be into your 30's before you see a decline.

Especially the guys who don't play all that physical

I don't hate the idea. His contract term + his age isn't ideal though, but I'll always have a soft spot for the guy and seems to be settling into 2C territory.

That said, reading between the lines of the stuff surrounding how he left the team, one can't wonder that Shanny was a big role in the decision - would be be willing to allow Tre to bring him back is probably the key question.

Would be fun if it happened, at least for a while

Honestly not sure why this is a topic.

Random question, random answer, got as much of a chance of happening as me flapping my arms fast and flying.

Well most players usually start declining at or around their 30s. I’m not talking something steep like what we say from JT last year, more so a slight step back. For example, instead of consistently scoring 60 something goals, he will score 50 something. It’s still very much elite, but it isn’t the undisputed best goal scorer in the world

i also think kucherov’s style works much better in terms of aging because it feels like it has very little to do with his physical abilities. Obviously keeping his skating at his level and shooting + hands is integral to his success, but his IQ and ability to draw in defenders is something I’ve never seen.

Nylander relies heavily on his skating, something that declines with age

Matthews relies on his shoot, but his ability to find open space could keep him aging well, but he has already had a couple of wrist injuries so who knows how that’s effecting him at 30+

marners had more ankle injuries than most players in the league. He does have pretty high IQ as well, so he could also age well if he can continue to play smart.

Maybe I should’ve rephrased, we shouldn’t expect them to fall off that early, but it shouldn’t be seen as some unforeseen action that happened.

Your point is factual. I was just being difficult. Matthews only being 25, possibly 26 now I think he will have 5-8 really good years left.

Nylander rarely has any physical drama so as long as he can skate and shoot he should be PPG throughout the contract. Marner too, but I can't get a read on if they plan on bringing him back.

I think it's more that we may not see Matthews here after his current contract ends, as opposed to his play dropping off.

I think he stays with Arizona out of the league.

Unless they continue to suck come April and the pressure and noise is too much

Impossible to predict either way, but the odds generally weigh against a player staying with a single team for his entire career. In any event. not something that anyone has to think about for several years.
