LONG TERM is the play if he'll take it. 7 years
I can't see why he would. Not unless the AAV makes it worth it, which we probably won't be able to afford. He's making 2.4 now. Maybe he would take 3.5 for 2 or 3 years, but anything longer than that will require an AAV over 4 mil, maybe over 5 mil to get him to sign.

I'd like to find a way for 7 years x $4.5m if he'd take it

I find this board's rapid flipping on kakko to be hilarious.

And i'd agree with that number. I think Kakko likes NY and doesn't want to leave. I do think we might need to do something like 4m x 5 though. Buy a few UFA years, get past panarin's contract and out of the worst of the cap crunch next year.

for real. lots of "kakko should be a part of the team moving forward" and not a lot of "wow i was totally wrong about this guy"

Well that's because he's not the same case as Laf. Laf looks like he still has elite potential and he has been a great even strength scorer and Kakko looks like a good complimentary piece. He has great chemistry with Chytil though.

i take a pretty simplified view of this. players are either part of the problem or part of the solution.

it's not great to expend resources to acquire and retain players who are part of the problem.

but its far worse to get rid of players who are part of the solution. to have them and not keep them. see buch.

I was one of the few who had hopes for him this season in the offseason though. Last year just looked like an aberration

As was i, and i was sadly probably the most vocal. But go back what 5 pages and you’ve got “he’s not an nhl player” rhetoric.

And there’s plenty of folks who should be eating crow and are instead just pretending they never happened

I wouldn't lock him up for 7 x 4.5 right now. I'd still wait and see how the season goes with him. I think locking him up is jumping the gun a little here.

That's fine, wait until game 50, but it should get done. If this continues, and it likely will as it's more his norm than not, the Rangers aren't going to find a player like him at that cost in UFA and beyond Lafreniere and Perrault, the RW depth in the organization isn't great.

If this season was a weird statistical aberration I’d agree.
But aside from last season, he’s about a .5 ppg player with extremely good defense in under 16 minutes of ice time.

These numbers are in line with that, and a guy who performs like that is worth 7 x 4.5

It' been a roller coaster ride with Kakko but he's just a solid player at this point and I dont care about the draft position. Can he fill the Reilly Smith role for the Rangers going forward? Not flashy but effective. Im sure he may still be moved for an upgrade but he's our guy

smith plays a very different game.

Kakko has plenty of small things that are surprisingly really difficult to do in hockey.

Smith is a guy who skates hard, doesn’t create much for himself but makes a lot of opportunities.

Still think Kakko is traded after this season, the cap is going to force the Rangers hand. But I hope he continues to have a nice season, it will only make the return more palatable if he is traded.

I think Kakko should be watching Smith. Most of Smith's effectiveness comes from defensive plays in the neutral zone and forecheck that lead to opportunities'. He's a better finisher and skater than Kakko at this stage of their careers but 24 should focus on being that type of player and driving the net.

Smith is significantly faster.

If Kakko was as fast as smith, we’d be lucky
To sign him for Laf money.
