Well, I mean, there was clearly some conversations with the coaching staff and Panarin/Strome. They were only playing as a two man unit. And finally tonight they were actually looking for Kakko. I hope they continue to play as a threesome against better competition. We shall see.

Panarin has been looking for him, he's just nowhere near as good yet at finding open space as Strome. I still don't really see that line working long-term, but at least they are trying. Both Panarin and Kakko are huge puck hogs

That’s his issue. He’s never making himself available. Same goes for all our kids.

when Panarin has the puck…. Create a passing lane in a scoring position. As simple as it sounds it rarely happens.

Agreed. The kids tend to coast too much looking for space and expect Panarin or Fox or whoever to pass it through a bunch of sticks. They need to keep moving their feet and playing fast. That's one thing you can say about Strome, he plays well with Panarin because he keeps moving his feet and plays fast away from the puck in the offensive zone. Both Laf and Kakko have gotten better at it. But they both have a ways to go. Kakko needs to find more open space in the middle of the ice. In the slot area. I'd like to see him and Panarin figure out some give and go stuff where Kakko is crashing the net. And also, it feels like they could create some magic if Kakko drove to the net for a rebound as Panarin purposely puts the shot into the goalies pads. I think they'd be very effective at that.

11 games and atrocious numbers, yet people see the good here. Fwiw, the shootout goal would never happen in a playoff game and in anything but a shootout. Not even the same as a breakaway..because shootout you can take your time . Nick fotiu had better numbers then him...sadly...we shall see.

An assist, a highlight reel goal, and a successful shootout attempt.

Nice way to get on the board for the first time this season. Let's hope this is the spark Kakko and the team need.
Reality is it won't be the spark..better chance watching mcdavid and draisatl having a bad game then this being a spark

Great game for the kid. He looked electric after the assist.

Amazing what a 2nd assist on a garbage goal on the powerplay will do for a young scorer's game.

The very next shift, Lafreniere goes end to end and tries to make a backhand pass to the slot, backchecks, steals the puck, and changes. Its not an amazing shift, but its the attitude and mindset you want from the kid, and getting some touches and some points--ie. PP time--makes a difference.

Agreed, in my opinion that is Kakko's biggest area to improve at, finding open space for himself to recieve passes.

That's what they did for the 3-2 goal against CBJ. The rebound jumped up so Kakko didn't get a handle, but Strome was able to pick it up and give it to Panarin.

Great game from Kakko!

He still misses some clear pass opportunities which I think will improve as his confidence improves.

Right before the Laf goal he receives the puck on the side boards from Blais and has an opportunity for a quick cross ice pass to an open teamate:

Once you make that pass you cut to the net and will at worst have 2 forwards and 1 D downlow or 1 F and and no D downlow. Blais/Lunqvist would likely be wide open cutting to the slot too as the high Fs covering them scrambles to help down low. Instant havoc would be created. Instead he secures the puck and the cross ice passing lane is shut. He takes the safer play to go downlow and NJ is able to block the highest danger passing seam so Laf finds Lundqvist up high, back to Kakko again and he ends up with the assist on a 'dirty' rebound goal. Still a nice play at the end but I'd love to see him sling the puck cross ice right after receiving the Blais pass.

These are plays that the big guns on the top PP unit consistently make and he needs to show he can make as well. Worked out in the end anyway of course, just a small thing I noticed.

I don’t mean to sound like I’m taking a shot at the guy after he played a great game, but I’d like to see Kakko have more confidence in his shot. He tends to try to stickhandle the puck into the net, which can lead to pretty goals like the one last night (and at least one I can remember from last season). But that is not a play that will work as often at this level. He’d have better results with taking a quick shot from the high danger areas (especially if the goalie has yet to set himself) than trying to go around for a tap in.

The top picture... can't see where the puck is... His head is still down, yes the lane is open but once he's receives the puck and looks up the defender is already in that lane.

What this goes to show is hard-crisp puck movement is a necessity. You can't take your time, like we often do and allow the opposing team to get in position/or the shooting/passing lane.

It's on his stick already (you can hear the puck hit it) and you can extrapolate where it is from that. The puck didn't bounce off based on his movement, he had full control. Had he fired it across right away he had a lane, but that was never a thought for him, he was 100% focused on gathering the puck in properly which is fine. Guys like Panarin and Fox (and Zib) would know before getting the pass the best play instinctually, but that's elite vision and passing skills which is pretty rare

The other side of the coin is that the team tends to feed the puck to Panarin, especially in the o-zone, even when it's not the optimal play. Obviously you want a player like Panarin to be involved as much as possible and the puck to go through him so he can do his magic, but there is no point in overfeeding him either and force the play. Case in point was in the first period against the Devils where Nils in the o-zone had Kakko totally open to his right, calling for the puck, but chose to make a cross ice feed to Panarin who instantly had two Devil players on him and the puck got pushed out of the zone.

1. I was an underrated skater.
2. I hit the ice like a bull in a china shop. Nobody wanted to get in the way.
3. I had a very solid wrist shot
4. I did not play in the NHL till I was around 24. Kakko is only 20.
