I followed Kakko's draft season in Liiga and I noticed the same pattern.

The first quarter he adapted to playing in Liiga. The second quarter he started to show his obvious talent, leading up to the WJC gold. The third quarter he was impressive. The final quarter he was outright dominant, and went on the win gold with the men at the World Championship.

That pattern is how I see his curve of development unfold in the NHL over the next three or four seasons (rather than quarters within a single season).

And thats the sign of a player who was drafted #2 overall. Extreme talent, a strict work ethic and the ability to develop quickly both mentally and physcally.

Lets not forget that he will likely add 15-20 lbs of muscle onto his 6'3 frame and end up 215ish. Hes gonna be a horse

BTW, Kakko and players of his ilk are why sometimes fans of teams are actually more objective than outside fans. Someone on main boards said how he can't believe he went 2nd overall every time he watches him. The nuance of his improved board and defensive play is something outsiders wouldn't be interested in getting into and would instead look at goals and assists. Fans of a team might actually look at context and nuance for a player taken 2nd overall.

Um...maybe. but there are no hidden ways to make it work. Raimo helminen broke gretzkys record for most pts in world junior..n sucked nhl. Just bc it worked at a lesser talent league doesn't mean it happens here.

But he was promoted as a scorer...your saying he's like a Brent sutter?? Who was taken end first round.....id stop defending his play..2 assists in 30 games is worse then nick fotiu

This is on coaching. I think defense is his (and Laf's etc) theme this season. Another obvious instruction is to go in front of goal and stand there wrestling with a defender while others skate and move the puck (Laf doesn't do this yet). This is one reason I wonder if the NYR are following the Rantanen template with Kaapo.
Past my pay grade to know. But as a player u need to get better and pick up on things to do....

"I've watched Kakko 4 times in my life and I can't believe he went 2nd overall!"

Earlier this year, a Sens fan asked me if I even watch Stützle and I was straight-up like "no and I don't give a shit."

I don't care what people think they see. Watching players in iso can be useful but nobody does that. They're watching the game.

90% of their evaluation is going to be how many times the announcer said a guy's name.

LOL what would be wrong with Brent Sutter? At his peak he was a tough solid player who scored 40 goals and a 100 points.

He's 20. Most guys aren't in the NHL yet at 20. We just have to accept that he and Laf are normal prospects and not saviors.

We have a savior. Adam Fox.

Also, here's me looking for a prospect from the 2019 draft that's clearly better than Kakko at this point

Fox is our savior, but I’m convinced Kakko will become an elite player, if not franchise player. Right up there with Fox but probably not as good. I’m not as sold on Lafreniere, but I still have hope for him too. @EdJovanovski is right. Canadian prospects do get overrated. It is what it is.

Who would you take in the 2019 draft over Kakko, and why.
Would still take Kaapo in the top 2 as of right now. Now the 202 draft... at this point in time I would revise the 1OA to go to Stutzle, but its still early and I want to see what a stronger and quicker Laf does next season under hopefully a different coach.
