It’s funny how a year ago he was a hot commodity potentially at trade deadline with budding askarov in the wings. Now we have no askarov and Saros has been awful and is tied up at 8x8….

What is his value now with this contract? Is he negative value at this point?
What would your team pay for him? A fourth? What a mess…

I thought he was actually doing pretty good? Like I remember him having elite stats despite Preds losing their first 30 games or whatever

Saros is still a good goalie. Probably more like top 10 than top 5 like before. But he still has all the skills and speed he used to so maybe his stats would flip back once he gets out from behind the absolute dumpster fire in front of him in Nashville.

Anyway it’s kind of a moot point now. Trotz isn’t going to trade him, he already made up his mind that Saros was going to be his guy, and that case is closed.

I don’t imagine any other teams will want that contract anyway. With the rising Cap it’s going to be a bit of a bargain for a quality starter as far as AAV goes. But the term is a huge problem. I assume we couldn’t even give Saros away now.

Just have to chalk it up as another big mistake by Trotz.

While I hate the contract and Saros hasn't been greater this season, the team in front of him is making it way worse.

Go look at the starting defensive pairings from lastnight, and then realize Brunette plays one of the dumbest systems you will ever see and then you start to realize that goalie is the least of our problems.
Brunette has a system?

Saros and his contract will probably be just fine for the next 3-5 years. He'll still be a solid NHL starting goalie, and there just aren't a lot of those who have that kind of consistency these days. His stats will be better if the Predators ever have a decent coach and defensive system, or they'll look suspect (like now) if the dumpster fire burns longer. But either way, Saros is a good goalie... on that timescale. The problem in Nashville is that it seems now to be a timescale during which the Predators will not be competitive. So it's a bit of a waste.

If there is a team who needs a goalie and is willing to sacrifice the back end of that contract for immediate success, they really should go after Saros. I doubt it would get them anywhere... Trotz probably isn't going to just give him away, even though he should. But he'd be like Ekholm, teams will be surprised by just how good he really is if he gets to play somewhere else.

I think if trotz was willing to trade saros he would have teams interested even with the term. The aav isn't horrible and if a contending team could get 4 to 5 years of good goalie play from him they would still make the move just to compete for those 5 years. One team that comes to mind is Columbus. I think they have a good team but not so good goalie play. With a solid goalie they could definitely be a playoff team and possibly make noise when in.

Well, I would certainly be willing to trade Saros to any team out there, be it Edmonton or Columbus, who would just take the contract. If they want to send back a goalie contract with a few years on it to help make it work, I'd be onboard (Skinner or Merzlikins, whoever).

I just really don't think that's Barry Trotz's mindset. At all. The guy still thinks that this year is just some weird one-off, and he'll bring back the same coach, all the same players, maybe sign an additional veteran UFA or two, and voila, the Preds become a contender next season. I don't see how we get around that delusion, alas. So he'll walk into Saros' NMC years before he realizes just how f'ed the franchise is.

That said, Saros himself is looking increasingly frustrated with the nonsense in front of him, all the guys falling on top of him all the time, maybe the NMC won't be as big an impediment as we're thinking!

Well no, trotz is a boob. This is all hypothetical because having hypothetical conversations keeps us from thinking about reality which right now is pretty sad
