Seems like Holl is penciled in as a spare RHD on the NHL roster, but was waived for flexibility so they can send him down if they need to recall a forward. Makes sense since Edvinsson is the only waiver exempt player on the roster and they likely don't want to have to send him down. That and given Holl's horrible contract, he was basically guaranteed to clear.

At least now the social media Yzerdrones that compared Holl to Larry Murphy last summer can rest easy since he's still on the roster and thus still has a chance to fill those shoes

It was only his mistakes at the 2023 playoffs, which did create ultimate hate from Leafs fans. That fansbase is 100x more crazy finding for scapegoats, so it was understandable.

His regular season was pretty good and no one cared before that. Was playing only for 2M.

This is false. Holl certainly was particularly brutal in the 2023 playoffs, but he had also been the Leafs fans equivalent to Jonathan Ericsson for quite some time before that.

Unless I am misunderstanding, sounds like he's been sent to the AHL.

The Detroit Red Wings today assigned forwards Sheldon Dries and Joe Snively, and defensemen Justin Holl, William Lagesson and Brogan Rafferty to the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins.

The roster moves bring the Red Wings to a 23-man roster, consisting of 13 forwards, seven defensemen and three goaltenders. The Red Wings will begin their 99th season in franchise history on Thursday, Oct. 10 with a home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7:00 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena.

Yea, I was speculating prior to it having been reported he was sent down, since he was still practicing with the NHL club after having been waived.

While it’s still technically our offseason, I’ll put my take out there.

Holl wouldn’t make my opening roster if everyone is healthy, and if I could get out his deal I’d obviously prefer to - but I’ve seen plenty worse defensemen since 2017 or so. I think that Holl has somewhat unfairly become a talisman for the issues on our blueline. To me the problem is that we have a #1, a #4, a pretty big wildcard in Edvinsson, and too many bottom pairing guys.

Reporters just reporting wrong.

He will be there as 8th defenceman, practising. So they can have full 5-man units and have PP vs. PK practises.

Still waived and outside the technical roster. There's nothing special in this.

I don't like this. I legitimately would have sent him down, played in Grand Rapids. ( Or don't report and void the contract? )

Catering to a player for what I see is no reason. Can't figure out an advantage at all having him around.

Making Millions in the AHL isn't the worst life a player can hope for even a veteran.

Makes it harder sign UFAs in the future. Holl is good enough to be 6/7D on a bad team, Stevie will sell Holl at 50% retention for a bag of pucks as soon as a team gets hit with injuries.

It's fine you feel this way.

But all of it I disagree with everything you just said. All of it seems far-fetched. Literally every word/sentence. (IMO).

Say out loud to another fan somewhere that Red Wings will have trouble signing some players because of sending Justin Holl to the AHL.

Maybe one day people will stop pretending SJ actually is going to do anything. That trade was a 2nd round free to take Walman from us.
