Hey guys,

I've always been curious about Justin Braun (I also have always confused him with Jason Demers. Haha). Would you say he's a top 4 RD? Is he a PMD/PP QB? The Rangers really need a top 4 RD who can be a PP QB/PMD, but players like Shattenkirk and Ceci are too costly. Hence my questions on Braun.

Would this proposal be fair:

Rick Nash (some salary retained), Dylan McIlrath and Tanner Glass for Justin Braun and a 3rd rounder

No thanks from the Sharks and no, he's a stay at home type guy, you'll have better luck looking elsewhere for a PPQB/PMD.

He hasn't shown the offensive instincts to be a PPQB but he is a reliable shutdown d-man playing with Vlasic in the high minutes they get against the best.

Sharks likely don't have any interest in Rick Nash and likely couldn't replace Braun's contributions.

Braun is better than most people give him credit for, Sharks defense definitely gets noticeably worse if he gets sent out.

I think he'd help the Rangers though.

The Sharks need a goaltender for their AHL club if I were San Jose I'd ask for a simple trade involving goalie Magnus Hellberg for maybe a draft pick.

Interesting. I ask about the PMD/PP QB thing because his assist total is fairly high

He had 19 assists last year. 23 points each of the last two seasons. That looks like a PP QB? Sharks would want a hefty price for him (rightfully) but he's a defense first player and not what you're looking for at all.

Eh. 60th among defensemen, ahead of guys like Spurgeon, Lindholm, Dumba, Ceci, Myers, Oduya... Not too shabby

Interesting to note: 10 of his 18 assists are primary assists. I would guess he's a Klein type player in some way to San Jose fans. Similar intangibles; can produce a bit of offense, stronger on the back-end, can skate but it isn't his greatest quality.

Contrary to Braun, Klein only had 2 primary assists of his 13. I would say Braun is a slightly improved version of Klein.

Not shabby but not that high. He gets a lot of minutes for that kind of production. It's not something that should be seen as some big deal in his favor. He's alright but nothing special there.

One difference for Braun is that skating is likely his greatest asset.

Wtf how does this help the Rangers at all. Nash scored 40 goals last last season. He can still produce 30 goals 60 points, maybe even more. And we have to add Mcillarth. It's a joke how much Nash is underrated. When healthy, Nash is one of the best goal scorers, and plays a great two way game.
Last year, it would take Braun and a first to get Nash alone. Nash is key to the Rangers success. He may be overpaid, but the team will not improve by replacing Nash with Braun.

Sharks wouldn't have paid Braun and a 1st for Nash even coming off of 40 goals. Braun's too valuable a piece to their lineup and too difficult to replace. They can win w/o a player like Nash.

More of a stay at home type so probably not what you're looking for. In a vacuum, Braun is probably worth a 1st in the 10-20 range. To the Sharks though it's worth so much more. He's Vlasic's partner which has led to Vlasic improving. He's our second best defensive D and he's definitely no slouch on offense. He's practically untouchable or at least won't be moved barring major overpayment.

Braun is one of the more underrated D in the league, I wouldn't touch this if I was the sharks.

Braun is easily our 3rd best defenseman and would be a good #2 if it weren't for that Burns guy. In fact, Braun outplayed Vlasic in the playoffs last year.

He's going nowhere and certainly not for Nash. We can't even fit him under the cap.

Imo Braun and Mattias Ekholm continue to be the most underrated D around the league.

We do?

Edit: Braun's defensive ability is only a bit worse than Vlasic's (he makes a few more noticeable hiccups, especially in the Nashville series, but both have good stick work). He's an incredible skater (he was god awful as a skater when we drafted him), he's really good defensively and he can move the puck really well. He's the defensive defenseman of the modern NHL. Unlike Vlasic he doesn't have much snarl in his physical game.

The only problem is that he has basically no offensive instincts at all. I remember in a game this year he made a shifty move with the puck to get it on net (and eventually a goal) and everyone raved about it lol. He also had a nice play on Nikolai Goldobin's first goal where he drove the net and tied up the lone defender's stick. Those are the only two times, off the top of my head, that his offensive ability has ever stood out to me.

Smart player, he just has very little dynamic offensive ability. He's not really what your looking for in this proposal.

I think he was just saying that the Sahrks should try and do Hellberg for a pick...nothing involving Braun.

I see Nash does have some value to work with his bud Joe Thornton, at the right price, and terms which = cap fit.

OP is not a match there

as to above I forget what slot draft pick NY paid for Helberg, but if you went one slot above, and threw in a future 7th, you could have him. He's improving, but IMO I like our many other guys in/throughout our system. temporary work around maybe as to immediate status but asap I want the work/pecking order to go to Mackenzie Skapski, who had limited opportunity and was successful, but then had injury. He should be returning to form, so your welcome to Hellberg
