Just how good is the Mcdonagh/Girardi pairing..?

That second pairing has a total of 22 points for the whole year while getting 20 minutes a night. Some people wanna give Marc Staal a $6M dollar deal with those kinds of numbers, and a concussion history and some wanna give Stralman $3.5 with term.

They haven't overacheived to say the least, and the McD and G pair has gotten more minutes as the season has gone along.

I would love to see Staal with a Girardi type defenseman as that would maximize Staal's game, because with Stralman he hasn't shown any signs of offense.

I don't think AV is the type of coach that will play inexperienced defensemen much like Renney, but a Staal-McIlrath pairing should be close to the early days of Staal-Girardi. Having a guy like McIlrath will ease some of the physical pressure off of Staal and buy him some more room.

You don't even know if McIlrath can play in this league.
 
Girardi is great.

McD is not human. It's some beast they shaved and gave a human mask. His body does things human bodies don't do.

This is why I appreciate hockey players more than any other sport.

In most other sports a guy would take all the credit for his production when the reality is that it's player and teammates that make things possible.

McD is acknowledgeing that the work being done by his teammate is providing him the opportunity to jump into the play more.

I find it refreshing that these guys have the self confidence to praise their teammates more than themselves.

while I wouldn't go so far as to say that Dan is carrying Ryan. I CAN see the argument that McDonagh may not be posting the same amount of points with Kelin or Stralman as his partner.

Dan is doing a great job defensively. That said, McDonagh is playing as well as Dan (if not better) AND putting up points.

I wouldn't say Dan is carryign McD or vice versa.

I would say that these guys compliment each other a whole lot. I would loke to see Staal find a similar partner that would allow him to find his offensive game.

Maybe put Klein on Staal's RS?

I would love a Staal/Klein pairing. There is every reason to believe that Staal holds off on the offense because Stralman is not as solid as Girardi in any way...

Staal-Klein
Moore-Stralman

McDonagh was an offensive/two way D in high school. Montreal selected him 12th overall for that reason. At Wisconsin,Eaves used him a shutdown guy. He didn't see much PP team. Same thing with the Rangers. McDonagh showed some flashes of having offense under Tortorella but nothing like he has shown in last few months. AV put him on the PP. McD is on pace for 48 point season. Every team needs a #1 D to win a Cup. The Rangers found their guy. Thank you Bob Gainey and Pierre Gauthier. Staal scored some beautiful goals before the first concussion. The injuries are frustrating but its hard many D better than Staal when he is healthy. He is still 27. McD played with Sauer when he came up. Staal got hurt and McD played with Girardi. The Rangers Big Three. The Habs had Larry Robinson,Serge Savard and Guy Lapointe as their Big Three. The Rangers fill in the pieces around their Big Three.

Larry Robonson had 5 Stanley Cups, 2 Norris, and a Conn Smythe by 28 years old.

That is as many Cups, Norris's and Conn Smythes as Chara, Lidstrom, Chelios, Al MacInnis, Rob Blake, Scott Niedermayer and Scott Stevens had combined by age 28.

Yep, and all of those players were/are also deadly offensively.

well....playing for the Montreal Canadiens in the 70's and 80's. Some of the guys he played with--Ken Dryden (HOF) Guy Lapointe (HOF) Serge Savard (HOF) Guy Lafleur (HOF) Frank Mahovlich (HOF) Pete Mahovlich, Yvan Cournoyer (HOF) Henri Richard (HOF) Steve Shutt (HOF) Bob Gainey (HOF) Marc Tardif, Rejean Houle, Doug Jarvis, Pierre Mondou, Pierre Larouche, Jacques Laperriere, Guy Carbonneau, Ryan Walter, Mats Naslund, Chris Chelios (HOF) Bobby Smith, Claude Lemieux, Petr Svoboda, Shayne Corson, Rod Langway (HOF) Stephane Richer, Brian Engblom, Tom Kurvers, Michel Larocque, Patrick Roy (HOF) Rick Green, Eric Desjardins and we can go on and on.

Robinson was an integral part of the Montreal Canadiens--of that there is no doubt but IMO--Denis Potvin for one was a better player. Ray Bourque for another. Robinson certainly benefited from playing for a team that was loaded for years and years. McDonagh is a somewhat different kind of defenseman than Robinson. Robinson was a lot like Staal or Langway defensively--a long lean body with a lot of reach but quite a bit better than either of those guys as an offensive player. Robinson could also fight well though he did it rarely. I remember him kicking the crap out of Dave Schultz. Overall skill McDonagh to Robinson is not that much of a reach at this point in McDonagh's career. He's just not playing for as nearly good of a team. Personally I'd prefer to compare McDonagh's career trajectory to another Ranger--Brad Park.

You can't compare eras like that. With the exception of Lidstrom and Chara, those players played in an era where there was higher scoring and where defenseman with Norris' had above 70-80 points. That's not happening unless your Karlsson and you play subpar D, which won't be happening this year.


In my opinion, while there are still ways to go with McD's career, he has the POTENTIAL to be our Scott Niedermayer. While Scott may have has more offense, I think McD plays just as good D, with their two weaker sides balancing out.

Robinson wouldn't do that in this era.

That team would have been broken up and put back together at least twice that decade if it was today. Salary cap. Arbitration. Free agency at 7 or 27. 30 teams. Good luck playing in the finals almost every year.

I was out pointing that the Rangers strength is on those 3 D. Thats it. That's the Rangers backbone. Just like the Habs big three. That's all.

Doesn't Keith-Seabrook not even get the toughest minutes on D? McDonagh-Girardi play our toughest minutes and put up the most points.
