Claude Giroux has 2 points (2 assists) in 4 games vs the Rangers this season.
Alexander Ovechkin has 1 point (1G) in 4 games vs the Rangers this season..
Sidney Crosby has 6 points (3, 3) in 4 games vs the Rangers this season...
Evgeni Malkin has 2 points (1, 1) in 2 games vs the Rangers this season..

The best 4 players in our conference (maybe the division, though that is debatable) have a combined 11 points in 14 games vs us this season.

Very, very good. I don't think anybody would argue that they are a great shutdown pair. If McDonagh can keep putting up points like he has, that adds an entirely new dimension though.

They are really good. I still don't like when Girardi leaves the front of the net open to chase the puck in the corner or behind the net and drops to a knee to block passes but I think he'll always do this.

They both can skate, their relatively big guys, they can shoot and they have great chemistry together.

One of the top 1st pairings in the league.

Yeah, they're really good players. And they're even better together.

I'm really glad they play for us and will continue for some years yet.

Girardi plays his best hockey against Philly. He hates guys like Hartnell. When he's playing physical he is unstoppable.

The pair is definitely great though.

Could be interesting to see how many of those points are at even strength and with McD and G on the ice.

Think I read some place at the beginning of the season that Ovechkin and Crosby never had scored against us with McD on the ice.

Those 2, along with Lundqvist, are the clearcut backbone of this team. Nobody else really comes close in terms of importance.

Agree with this 100%.

In the past I have been unsure of Girardi, but since signing the contract he has been great. McD, Hank and Girardi bring the effort every night.

Another important attribute to this pairing is that neither of them are injury-prone....

One of the top duos in the league for sure. Really great shutdown pair, and has been mentioned, with McDonagh finally being allowed to show his offensive capabilities it's hitting another level.

I've wondered how McDonagh and Subban would look together. Theoretically Montreal had that coming. In that pair I don't think we'd see Mac score as many, being the more defensive capable of the two. He'd still likely put up a ton of points on primary assists. Interesting either way. He really can play both roles I feel. A true two way stud.

McDonagh commented that the reasoning for his offensive outburst this season is because of Girardi's steady play behind him.

That's a really nice compliment from McD but it sort of comes off as self-deprecating to me. McDonagh has been nothing short of fantastic most nights.

I don't see it as self deprecating at all. He's just saying he feels more comfortable rushing the puck or taking offensive chances because he knows his partner is great defensively and is going to have his back.

They're excellent, but I don't think AS GOOD as the Staal/Girardi pairing from a few years ago. That pairing was arguably best in the NHL.

They are definitely better than the Girardi/Staal pairing, and that isn't a knock to Staal, who is contributing so much to the 2nd pairing with Stralman.

Yeah, for evidence, just look at that play where Girardi hit Hartnell. McDonagh pinched, the puck came down the left side, and Girardi handled it with authority.

I don't know if I would agree with this.

I will say, however, that if one of these 3 went down with an injury, I think we could put the remaining 2 together and not miss a beat.

Staal when he's on his game is the best defensively of the 3 IMO.
