He wasn’t which was Savard’s main beef, Habs wanted LeClair to play like Neely… that just wasn’t in his DNA. With Philly Lindros played that style on the line, LeClair simply used his body to drive to the net

That just isn't true, When Leclair initially came up he was a winger who played a heavy game and dominated on the boards and Savard wanted the next Beliveau and moved him to center where he was in the middle of the ice. I was absolutely pissed as he clearly should have stayed on the wing which is exactly where Philly put him as soon as the acquired him.
He was never mean like Neely but to say that Leclair was not an absolute monster on the boards is egregiously wrong. He was a great forechecker who got on dmen with his high end speed and they invariably would cough up the puck as they would get plastered if they didn't. As he got older and his injury woes began to mount he certainly became less physical but to claim that it was not in his DNA is just false.

Slafkovsky (1OA) has now been lapped in points this season by Logan Cooley (2OA) and Shane Wright (4OA) and Lane Hutson (62OA).
He’s still 1st in standing of 2022 draftees career points with 90pts to Cooley’s 87pts albeit Slaf has played 42 more games than Cooley and 116 more games than Hutson who is 3rd place with 43pts.
In terms of career PPG Slaf is holding 4th but practically tied with Shane Wright who is 3rd by a hair. Cooley being the most productive forward and Hutson the most productive dman and most productive player overall, so far.
Development isn’t linear, as we often hear, so it’s worth asking if Slaf is passing the eye test and playing as the team intend .
With his recent demotion to a checking line, he played with more energy and directness but unlike Logan Cooley and Lane Hutson he is a long way from driving the play from a top line/pairing against top opposition.

I'm not sure if Slaf could score 30 goals in 42GP and 71pts total in the OHL right now, something that Sennecke is doing right after being drafted.

Slaf never passed the eye-test...
In his 1st season he taunted an NHL player after scoring a goal... who does that? Just this is a major red flag. They say 1st OA picks have 9 lives, he definitely lost 3 to 4 with that one.

Brown gave him a few cheap shots during the game and in particular that shift. Slaf basically just gave him a FU back after the goal. Yeah it's not needed but he's also a young kid with his emotions redlining, so I don't know if it's enough to be held against him.

How many would Sennecke score stapled next to Suzuki and Caufield and forcefed minutes? Given his performances this season, it is worth asking not if but how much of that hot 40-game stretch was a product of his linemates.

19 years old McCarron scored 28 goals and 68 points in 56 games in the OHL. I know some people hate Slafkovsky but man some of the takes .... you basically just compared Slaf to McCarron.

Like i said multiple times people should wait at least 22 years old before ranking a draft.

It’s equally pointless to compare a draft ten years later when discussing the benefit of a certain player and his personal development. The point of tanking is to pick up (1) premium talents and, as a secondary intent, (2)take advantage of their low cap hit as ELCs and RFAs.
Slaf and the Habs squandered his low cap hit years by not being good and not being competitive and then was given an overpay contract for his RFA years which he didn’t earn. So there goes argument 2.
Argument 1 is increasingly stressed by Slaf getting lapped by not one but now three players drafted after him.
It doesn’t matter until it matters.
Rehabs go back and watch that 40 game stretch. He wasn't a passenger with those two you simply need to go and watch the highlights of his hot stretch last year.
He is in a slump right now. It is concerning. That also doesn't mean that last year was some sort of anomaly.

Of the four half-seasons he has played, he has been “in a concerning slump” for three of them. He is currently entering his fifth half-season.
Playing next to a red hot Suzuki can make many players look good.

Development of young players isn't linear. Hughes said he could regress in year 3. He is still only 20. I think he has to be forced off the Suzuki line and take over his own line. Time for the training wheels to come off.
Whatever man. You have your thoughts on him....I have mine. You ate a lot of crow last spring but now have circled back to all of your original points you made about him. I will stick to my guns that Slaf will end up an impact player in this league.
As Tyson says above ^^ players development is not linear. He has it in him to score at that 50 point pace and likely much higher. These bumps in the road are opportunities for development.
Time will be the ultimate arbiter in this matter.
One more point about Slaf's year 3 struggles-
Lafleur 29 goals and 64 points in his rookie season.
He regressed to 28G 27A in year 2.
He bottomed out at 21G and 35A in year 3. I remember talking with my dad who never doubted Lafleur and he said...it takes time.
Let's not forget that Flower was 20 when he hit his 1st season.
I am not saying Slaf is the next Lafleur, I am saying that he is still figuring things out.

Does anyone else believe that a players true potential can be unlocked or repressed depending on coaching style, team systems and environment they play in?
My biggest fear about everyone mailing it in on Slaf is we trade him to an environment where he becomes the next Colorado version of Mikko Rantanen.
Rants is but one example (I know the sample is small) of a player who seems to be repressed in Carolina.
Another player I suspect would look poor in certain systems would be Draisatl. It doesn't get talked about a ton around here....but it is a legit thing. Players perceived values are inflated or degraded at times simply by the system with which they are playing.
Another example is Drouin. Sure....stapled to MacKinnon. But some stat watchers will scream from the roof tops how he is reaching his true self. Maybe that is true.
I couldn't imagine how f***ing awesome Slaf would look next to MacKinnon.
Under no circumstances in this moment would I trade Slaf.
