Player Discussion Juraj Slafkovsky Discussion

I would like to see Slaf make things difficulty physically for Washington, we really need to be pushing back
I think it's a mindset thing for him. He is still relatively young at 21. I expect by 24 he will be a huge handful for other teams and crash and bang a little more.

He is big and strong. The confidence that comes with that when facing men, is acquired through becoming a man yourself.

What I am saying is he is a man in body and has been for a long time. But, its possible, that he isn't quite there in mind yet. When those two things line up - that's when we will see fully formed Slaf.

It's like people don't understand that we're in the very early stages of this guy's career and he's going to be a much different player a few years from now.
Do you think it's possible that 50-60 points becomes Slaf's upside? It may come but he hasn't shown enough 3 full years in.

No doubt Slaf will improve! But to think he will developp the mean streak that a Brady Tkachuk has is not realistic. You are born with it. I just think he needs to find his identity. I dont care if he dont become a player like Brady, but he needs to use his big reach and body to charge the net with the puck.

Maybe he doesn't become a mean player. Maybe he becomes a pest a la the worm Corey Perry. Perry is 6'3 200+ lbs.

Slaf can do something with that body and I suspect we won't see it for a couple more years.

he doesn't have to have a mean streak to be hard to play against. This fan base is so damn obsessed with this it's borderline insane.

The two goals against the caps don't happen without Slaf being hard to move in front of the net.

Two of the three goals against the Canes in the playoff clinching game don't happen unless Slaf uses his body to separate the puck and cause havoc in front of the net.

He doesn't need to kill people to be physically effective.

Was Killorn meanest player? No, but he was a f***ing pain in the ass because he was hard to move out of the way and off the puck. Is Kreider mean? f*** no. But again, he is so hard to move off the puck and out of the way.

This obsession with wanting to punish people and being shit unless you're doing it is so goddamn unhealthy and annoying now.

Whats unhealthy and annoying is criticizing everyone who has a different view. Every fan sees things the way they see it but evidently if their views differ from yours it's unacceptable.

If you're expecting him to be Brady Tkachuk you'll be disappointed. But he's already added a lot more sandpaper to his game and I expect it to continue. He's a work in progress and of all our players he's the one I can least predict. He's got so many tools but needs to put them together. He's also becoming a pretty good agitator. I didn't expect that to happen but again... work in progress.

He really is the unsung hero on our team. He does a lot of work that allows CC and Nick to produce. He doesn't always get the points but he's instrumental in others getting them.

its annoying because there is a small portion of this fan base that defines physicality so narrowly that it's unworkable in terms of expectations. And this is causing endless annoying debates.

Correctamundo.

There are alot of folks who say stuff that I don't agree with but I try to find common ground. You and I disagree on the handling of Arber Xhekaj but I see your points as valid.
Cheers sir.

Larry Robinson was a guy who'd throw the occassional hit and when he had to could throw down with the best of them. But he wasn't what I'd call a nasty player. Didn't matter, he was hugely effective and one of the best players in the league.

Slaf won't be that good but he can be effective playing his own style. I'm good with how he's developing. It's going to take a while with him.

I think many are riffing on the fact the habs supposedly have no chance against the cap’s physicality without Xjekaj when in fact habs have a big players on every line.

Slaf does not have to be mean to be efficient; it’s just notice-ably not the hab persona right now to be mean. I can’t imagine a single nhl team is afraid to get hurt playing them.. He’s the the Hall Gill of power forwards lol

I agree but one thing is for sure...the Habs picked the wrong year to draft 1OA.
You know I am not convinced at all that this is correct and I'll tell you why, 4 years before the SLAF, BEDARD, CELIBRINI draft. IF someone would have asked which draft do you want 1OV. I am convinced 99.9% of everyone would have chosen the BEDARD draft.

Today not sure, but pretty sure more than 50% people would chose CELEBRINI over BEDARD.

My point is let's wait 5-6 seasons seeing how young players develop

Having said that I wish Slaf would develop a bit more Happy Gilmore with better skating into his game lol

He was nasty, they asked him to tone it down so he stayed on the ice.

I’m not expecting him to be, it’s not in his DNA. Slaf told us himself he wants to model his game around Tkachuks game, which is a bad idea. Like I said, he needs to find his identity. I dont really care if he dont fight/agitate but I want to see him crash the net more, he’s so huge. Fransen and Holmstrom back in the days where big « soft » player, but they contribute so much to the succes of the Wings back in the day. Like I said, just need to find his identity, it will come with time.

He's already 200 games into his career. How much more development runway could be left? (sarcasm)
Heard the 250 game mark thrown around as the xp at which you’re pretty much seeing what you’re going to get. Makes sense to me as completely arbitrary as it sounds.

Going from a 50pt power forward to a 60-70 pt one is what I am hoping as he hopefully gets strong and confident.
