Looks like the Capitals may have effed this one up. They stopped Burakovsky from going and then sent him to the Ahl. According to Peter Forsberg (no, not that Forsberg) of the swedish icehockey federation - that is against the rules.

edit: -> it seems like this could be actually a step for releasing him for the WJC, no?

You guys think Gaudreau can play for Team USA still? I mean its not like he looks 18 or anything anyways....

"By far."

No, he was ARGUABLY the best in the tournament, but certainly had competition from guys like Trouba.
Did you even watch the tournament that year? He had 15 points in 6 games played and lead all players. He was the best player that year "by far"

This is one reason why NHL have to go down.

Absolutely. The NHL, the greatest hockey league in the world by far and for almost a century, needs to go down due to not releasing a handful of teenagers to play in a junior tournament for two weeks every year.

Lol. He was easily the best player in that tournament. In fact I haven't seen one player dominate the tournament like that.

You haven't watched that many then. Even Forsberg and Teravainen were both better last year than Nugent-Hopkins was.

Why is McKinnon being listed? He ceased to be a Jr level player when he was signed in Colorado. No one who's played a full season in the NHL should be considered Jr's eligible.

Age is not the only consideration.

Completely disagree. TT had a pretty great year last year with his 12 points in 6 games, but it goes beyond points. Trouba was awesome two years ago, and IIRC, Gibson was outstanding.

No, I actually like to make comments without watching. :sarcasm:

No, he certainly wasn't. There's more to play and overall dominance than points. He was arguably the best in the tournament, but to suggest by far, is wrong.

ya, and considering 4 of those points came in the bronze medal cluster**** of a game...those 15 pts in 6 games means very little. If I say he played 2 good games that entire tournament, I think that would be fair.

MacKinnon is because listed because age, literally is the only consideration.

Maybe you think it shouldn't be that way, but as it stand it is that way, which is why people are listing him. MacKinnon is junior eligible and if something crazy like another lockout had happened this year, Mac would have played, like RNH did 2 years ago.

People are supposed to list players in this thread based on how you think things should be and not how they actually are? :help:

Hate to break it to you, but age is the only consideration and restriction for this tournament. It is officially a U20 tournament, i.e. players under the age of 20... this is not a tournament exclusively for players playing in junior leagues.

And 7 points came from the games against Germany (5) and Slovakia (2).

He meant that for all intents and purposes any player capable of playing a full NHL season doesn't belong in this tournament but of course you knew that. But yeah, technically they could be leading the league in points and playing 20+ minutes a night and still be eligible to go. Imagine the teams they will rent asunder if such a player played. Kind of like if 102-point Crosby played in the 2006 world junior championships, it would almost be a farce.

On that note, does anyone have an updated list of eligible players not being released to go? I counted 15 age-eligible players who have played games in the NHL this year.

But if you look at it as who a team is missing then yes it's a big deal. Using your example, had Canada had a 102-point Crosby in the 2006 world juniors they probably would have had an easier time winning. Had the USA had Jones, Trouba, and Galchenyuk last year they probably would have faired better. When McDavid and Eichel make the NHL next year Canada, USA losing their best player, Sweden this year with Burakovsky, there are countless examples over the years.

Maybe that's not how you look at it, but that's how these threads usually go, and it's not all about excuses, people look at the potential roster and what could have been, it's natural.

I personally would be all for some sort of mandated attendance for all players aged 19 and younger, but I can see the rationale for why MacKinnon and Ecklad are staying with their respective teams. I think if my team had to loan out its star player I'd be pretty torn.

Anyway I decided to do one myself:

Canada:
MacKinnon
Horvat
Drouin
Ekblad

Russia:
Zadarov

Finland:
Barkov

Germany:
Draisaitl

Sweden:
Burakovsky (Although I'm reading some reports that there could be a very slim possibility that he still goes after being sent to the AHL).

Mueller was just released by San Jose to join Switzerland.
Nichushkin is injured. Not sure if he was going to be sent if he was healthy.

Excluding Nischushkin, that's 6 out of 14 possible players released to go.

Compare their production when it mattered. Although Nugent didn't even make to finals.

I'm not really going to get into this argument, I could careless who is better, and I like Forsberg way more than Nuge, but there are lots of scoring leaders who put up the majority of their points against the weaker teams.

Forsberg put up 10 of his 12 points against Norway, Switzerland, and Slovakia.

Kuznetsov a couple years back scored 9 of his 13 points against Latvia. The other 4 came against Canada in the semis, so good for him there, but he went pointless in 5 other games.

Lots of good players have good tournaments by piling on the weaker teams.
