Value’s fine but this trade is the textbook definition of missing the forest for the trees.
Directionless and tone deaf.
Directionless and tone deaf.
I want to build the team the right way and this ain’t it, but having resigned myself to this organization being what it is, I can’t say I hate the direction they are taking the culture.
I love Trocheck and his attitude. Bring in another guy like that and let that attitude infect the rest of the team. Weed out the weaklings.
Also, trades are just fun.
Agreed, but they have to get moving. Only 32 games left and 5 points out of WC2. Need to go on a heater, ideally 4-1 minimum in the 5 games before the 4 nations break. 2 vs Boston and 1 vs CBJ and 1 vs Pitt- three teams we're fighting for that spot with are basically must wins. Vegas is the other game this Sunday, second night of back to back which sucks.
From my perspective, it isn't about a good or bad trade... it's fine on paper obv.If you think this trade is bad from the Rangers perspective, consider our friends in Vancouver. They are pissed at the return and should be. It’s an awful trade for the Canucks.
But we do have a couple kids ready to go in Othmann and Berard that are very close and most likely are on the team next year. You got two kids on the 4th line too and Perrault coming as wellLaf and Cuyle are now the only players in our top 9 under 30.
Feels like just a few years ago we started a rebuild, and in one season we skipped to the retirement home stage of it.
One guy is basically smaller than Jones so his chance of getting in the lineup is not great. Are the other players coming from Vancouver roster guys? I love this trade.
Chytil is a good soldier, does a lot of little things right, and is very talented. The points never seen to me what they should be, but I think he produces more with a larger role.'Nucks fan here. I'm a bit numb to all of it, right now.
Not too fussed over the return. It is what it is. To be expected.
FWIW, you definitely got the best player in this trade. I loved his passion. He has been everything we could have hoped for since he arrived from TB. Our team just lost the fire in its belly.
Dunno anything bout the D prospect. Hope he's a third pairing guy one day, I guess.
Chytil: Level with me, what are we getting?
I must be missing something, but this trade makes no sense to me from an asset management standpoint or a roster standpoint.
I'll try to break down my thoughts:
But it's more on the return side the deal doesn't make sense.
- Trading Chytil makes sense. He's blocked here, hasn't shown much skill as a playmaker, is probably better as a winger, and has the concussion history.
- Trading Mancini...may or may not make sense. He's young, has a good shot, is a big body, and is physical. He could end up being Trouba a few seasons ago someday, he could end up being Kevin Klein, he could end up being Corey Potter or Steve Eminger.
All this makes me think another big move is coming.
- First, what's the plan with JT Miller? In trading Chytil as the 3C, if Miller plays C, he's buried on the 3rd line at an 8M cap hit. If he plays LW, he goes to the 2nd line and replaces Kreider. So Kreider becomes a third liner, and this adds a player into his mid 30s on a rebuilding team at an 8M cap hit. What's the point?
- Why are we adding yet another LD in Brannstrom? Where does he play? Team already has Miller, Jones, Lindgren, Vak.
That said, the asset management on this is terrible.
Chytil (late 1st round pick) + mid first round pick (or ??? first round pick if the pick is high this year and pushed to 2026) + Mancini (depth D with upside)
FOR
Miller (former mid 1st round pick) + Brannstrom (depth D that formerly had upside and is pretty established as a depth D) + Dorrington (not really a great prospect).
So to recap:
All this just to bring back the player they basically gave away for free for his best seasons...at 31.
- The Rangers drafted Miller in the first round.
- Traded him to Tampa with McDonaugh for a whole lot of nothingburger (Howden/Hajek/pick that became Nils Lundqvist
- Nils Lundqvist traded to Dallas for a first round pick that was traded to St. Louis for a couple months of Tarasenko and Mikkola, neither of which was re-signed.
- Rangers miss JT Miller's prime seasons
- Rangers then trade a former first rounder and a first round pick to bring Miller back at 31, past his athletic prime, at a huge cap hit.
If this isn't the most Rangers trade in recent memory, I don't know what is.

Put him with Garland. Let them motor.Fil getting breakout passes from Hughes will be fun to watch.
