Confirmed with Link: JT Miller traded to NYR for Chytil, Mancini, 1st round pick (protected)

I want to build the team the right way and this ain’t it, but having resigned myself to this organization being what it is, I can’t say I hate the direction they are taking the culture.

I love Trocheck and his attitude. Bring in another guy like that and let that attitude infect the rest of the team. Weed out the weaklings.

Also, trades are just fun.

Whats the right way though?

I watched a team basically push the buy button every season (and they continue to do so and Im sure will find a way to do it again) and they won the cup 2 years ago.

Panthers won with just 3 (technically 4 if you want to count a 2nd tour of duty guy in Kulikov) of their own draft picks on their roster last year.

They need to really commit to weeding out the old core and ridding themselves of their detriments, but I don't think the old school "build through the draft" really holds water anymore. Once can be called a fluke, 2 in a row is a pattern.

Cap is about to inflate like a mother f***er too. It's going to change things.

I don’t buy for a second that severelli has the kind of sources in the rangers to know something like “Dolan vetoed the first one!”

Agreed, but they have to get moving. Only 32 games left and 5 points out of WC2. Need to go on a heater, ideally 4-1 minimum in the 5 games before the 4 nations break. 2 vs Boston and 1 vs CBJ and 1 vs Pitt- three teams we're fighting for that spot with are basically must wins. Vegas is the other game this Sunday, second night of back to back which sucks.

They gotta go do what the isles are doing and they haven’t really done it yet. Go win 5 6 in a row. Not mix in OT losses. Straight 2 pts every night. They need to start mounting wins right now. They cannot lose any of these games to Bos or Columbus or Pitt. I mean this is game 7 time for them. Pretty dire here. That’s the only tough part about the trade is the timing. It’s late. I know it’s not just for this year but drury held his balls in his hands all year. Should have fired Laviolette ages ago too as step one

If you think this trade is bad from the Rangers perspective, consider our friends in Vancouver. They are pissed at the return and should be. It’s an awful trade for the Canucks.
From my perspective, it isn't about a good or bad trade... it's fine on paper obv.

But it will not make us a contender.

Mika playing on the 3rd line is still lazy ass Mika giving pucks away.

Kreider still doing f*** all.

Our defense being a shit show.

If this were a future-looking move I'm in.

It's just so NYR to take a player & just toss him away as a throw-in on a shit trade & then pay, small or not, to get him back.

I don't believe he'll be the player here that he was in Vancouver & I don't believe this makes us a MUCH better team now, nor in the future.

I hope I'm wrong

Laf and Cuyle are now the only players in our top 9 under 30.

Feels like just a few years ago we started a rebuild, and in one season we skipped to the retirement home stage of it.
But we do have a couple kids ready to go in Othmann and Berard that are very close and most likely are on the team next year. You got two kids on the 4th line too and Perrault coming as well

I don’t think people understand the gravity of this trade.

This trade was a change of leadership. This went from Zibs and Kreiders room to Miller and Tro’s room.

This is not a country club move. Both of these guys are hard noses no BS players. This is a step in the right direction toward getting the players that hate to lose instead of love to win.

'Nucks fan here. I'm a bit numb to all of it, right now.

Not too fussed over the return. It is what it is. To be expected.

FWIW, you definitely got the best player in this trade. I loved his passion. He has been everything we could have hoped for since he arrived from TB. Our team just lost the fire in its belly.

Dunno anything bout the D prospect. Hope he's a third pairing guy one day, I guess.

Chytil: Level with me, what are we getting?
Chytil is a good soldier, does a lot of little things right, and is very talented. The points never seen to me what they should be, but I think he produces more with a larger role.

The only concern is injuries.

I must be missing something, but this trade makes no sense to me from an asset management standpoint or a roster standpoint.

I'll try to break down my thoughts:
  • Trading Chytil makes sense. He's blocked here, hasn't shown much skill as a playmaker, is probably better as a winger, and has the concussion history.
  • Trading Mancini...may or may not make sense. He's young, has a good shot, is a big body, and is physical. He could end up being Trouba a few seasons ago someday, he could end up being Kevin Klein, he could end up being Corey Potter or Steve Eminger.
But it's more on the return side the deal doesn't make sense.
  • First, what's the plan with JT Miller? In trading Chytil as the 3C, if Miller plays C, he's buried on the 3rd line at an 8M cap hit. If he plays LW, he goes to the 2nd line and replaces Kreider. So Kreider becomes a third liner, and this adds a player into his mid 30s on a rebuilding team at an 8M cap hit. What's the point?
  • Why are we adding yet another LD in Brannstrom? Where does he play? Team already has Miller, Jones, Lindgren, Vak.
All this makes me think another big move is coming.

That said, the asset management on this is terrible.

Chytil (late 1st round pick) + mid first round pick (or ??? first round pick if the pick is high this year and pushed to 2026) + Mancini (depth D with upside)

FOR

Miller (former mid 1st round pick) + Brannstrom (depth D that formerly had upside and is pretty established as a depth D) + Dorrington (not really a great prospect).

So to recap:
  • The Rangers drafted Miller in the first round.
  • Traded him to Tampa with McDonaugh for a whole lot of nothingburger (Howden/Hajek/pick that became Nils Lundqvist
    • Nils Lundqvist traded to Dallas for a first round pick that was traded to St. Louis for a couple months of Tarasenko and Mikkola, neither of which was re-signed.
  • Rangers miss JT Miller's prime seasons
  • Rangers then trade a former first rounder and a first round pick to bring Miller back at 31, past his athletic prime, at a huge cap hit.
All this just to bring back the player they basically gave away for free for his best seasons...at 31.

If this isn't the most Rangers trade in recent memory, I don't know what is.

And people are excited for this shit like Miller hasn't been a manchild (I'm quoting this from the Canucks board).

Like, does this team really need that shit now?

I honestly don't know why people are happy with this move when defense has been the most broken thing on this team and you bring in a 30-something player to fix what??

With Miller-Tro clearly as the top two center, I wonder if we can transition Mika to play the role of 1994's Craig MacTavish. Kreider-Mika are still decent on the PK. They aren't the deadly SHG threat they used to be with Kreider losing a gear but give them a responsible defensive winger with the focus of just shutting other teams down. Of course there is the canyon of xGA and +/- they are but maybe they can excel when given a more focused role. Don't know if we will acquire such a RW. For now, it'll have to be Brodzinski. I don't imagine Othmann getting any looks. He wouldn't fit as a defensive winger.

Curious to try

If this isn't the most Rangers trade in recent memory, I don't know what is.

I'm pretty sure Mika is the one moving out of the top 6 and Miller is moving in. Mika has been a train wreck all year long both offensively and defensively. JT was a 100 point player last year.....he's not going to be on the third line. He's also one of the best face-off guys in the league and plays in all situations. He's stronger and much nastier than Mika and he's the type who will bull his way to the net. I think this deal doesn't portend well for Mika. He's going to lose minutes and there's no way I'd move a 59% face-off guy to the wing for a 50/50 guy who's turned into a perimeter player.

I don't like trading Filip but I also don't like seeing him get hurt all the time. I can't see him sustaining too many more head or neck injuries. His career could easily be over in the next year or two if he takes another big hit.

The 1st whether this year or next year is a valuable asset to be giving up and I think Mancini could be a solid player for years. That said Victor is a right side guy and when the Rangers signed Borgen to 5 years that kind of took away any RD slot opening up for the foreseeable future. We have Fox, Schneider, Borgen and Emery as our top RD prospect.

Also Dorrington is a minute eater and first pair LD for Northeastern a very good college team. I don't know all that much about him but he has size, moves pretty well and is physical. Canucks fans seemed to be fairly high on him. Brannstrom for now looks like an insurance player/trade bait.

It should make the Rangers a much stronger team for the rest of this year. Whether or not they'll make the playoffs or last very long if they do is a question. My guess would be if they did make the playoffs and if they somehow make it to the second round that's about as far as they could possibly get. More likely they'd get bounced in the first round. I do think this trade should give us two very good scoring lines going into next season and much better odds of having a bounce back season. Zibanejad's line flopped so badly this year and is a major reason why we are where we are. It will be hard to move Mika but that should be a main goal going forward. There are other personnel questions but he's the biggest one for now.

Canucks fan here.

Miller is now your best center. Lol at someone suggesting he'd be on the third line...

Panarin would be the best winger that Miller has ever played with consistently, I'd be very interested to see what they can do together.

He's elite at faceoffs, a hell of a shut down guy (when he tries) and should be a PPG guy at worst.

The best part is he shows up for big games, like the playoffs.

The "locker room cancer" talk is overblown, I fully expect he will fit into the locker room fine and even take on a leadership role over time.

Let me be clear: You got a great player for cheap because of some off ice stuff that shouldn't be an issue in New York.

I'll say this. I think you're getting a player that everybody here really likes and if there wasn't the specter of the next concussion, many would gladly have him on the team as a long-term piece. He has good size and is a really good puck carrier with good, controlled zone entries, that has some nifty moves in his pocket. Good along the boards at keeping the puck. But he's 25 and he still hasn't quite put it all together and his play style has led to his injuries. For you Nucks fans, you have to hope that he stays healthy (it's not unprecedented) and he's like another mid 20s guy your team traded for who hadn't taken the next step yet ;)
I for one will continue to watch him closely and hope he takes on the bigger role and succeeds for you.
---------
As for the Rangers side of the trade:

I dunno. Hope it works out but can't shake this sinking feeling that this is a trade us Rangers fans saw a lot of in the late 90s to early aughts. It's like...

Reginald: "Yeah this one should go here. This one across. Maybe I should rotate this one....yes by golly it just all looks nice now! Margaret, you should take a gander..."
Margaret: "Good heavens Reginald! What are you doing with those!?!?!"
Reginald: "Dear, I'm just adjusting them to look in perfect form and order. Isn't it lovely and an improvement?"
Margaret: "Yes, yes but shouldn't we be more concerned with the iceberg that just ripped a huge hole into the side of our ship???"....

...At least Trocheck would allow JT to remain on the door with him if it came down to it.
