But this whole having 5 forwards on the ice idea is precisely what the other teams thought when the Sharks acquired him. Certainly, Karlsson and Burns had their moments as a dynamic dual and they did make a run in Karlsson's first year. Don't get me wrong, prime Karlsson was something to behold. Then again, prime OEL was certainly a strong contender for being a top 5 Dman.

If Penguins retain, there isn't a whole lot of risk to Karlsson. He would only have 2 more years left after this season. I think Karlsson can still put up points if he can stay healthy and you let him play his game. If you want him to be a systems defender and expect him to defend well he's not your guy. I'm not sure that he would be a fit alongside Hughes.

Karlsson with Hughes would be a disaster. Hughes needs someone that can cover for him when he pinches for offense, not someone who is going to double down on that offence and be absolutely woeful when trying to defend or cover for his D partner.

Karlsson's defending is that bad, it's not worth the offensive value he brings at this stage in his career.

Interesting stat discussed on the radio: Miller and Boeser get 50% more Ozone starts per 60 min when compared to Pettersson, and Pettersson is 7th in that regard amongst forwards. Something to keep in mind when evaluating Miller.

I think Tocchet could definitely do a better job of getting Pettersson out there for offensive draws more often. Too many times the 3rd or 4th line comes out for an ozone draw when the big guys are rested.

But if I'm choosing between the two I'm 100% putting Miller out there over Pettersson - he's produced more since the start of last year and provides a better chance at winning the draw back to Hughes for him to do something with the puck.

And best of both worlds option - get them out together for ozone draws like Edmonton does with their guys.

They don't work together, but worth a shot.

For keeping the same deployment: Then expect more of the same.

Last game, they hinted at what I'm looking for: Pettersson was on a worse line, relative to Miller, but each had decent time with Hughes. The Pettersson line generated 2 goals (Hughes did), but Pettersson did not get any Grade A chances himself. Miller got a few great chances, but his line got caved possession wise (despite Hughes). If Pettersson can generate a few more noticeable chances within that framework, then that's truly the best of both worlds. Possession and chances instead of just chances.

Miller would still have his ability to convert on the 2nd line and Pettersson could regain his ability to convert on the 1st line.

I was at the game.

Then you don't know what you were watching.

He was playing a seriously deep team, playing at it's peak, with a super big forward corps with a career minor leaguer and a spotty defensive forward who has recently been healthy scratched.

He wasn't dynamic and didn't do sportscenter top ten type of shit. But he created a whole lot of turnovers in both zones which is huge against a team like the capitals who can absolutely merry-go-round you and managed to do more than saw off his minutes while playing with the aforementioned forwards and, at times, Desharnais and Forbort.

I like Hoggy, but if Desharnais, Forbort, and Karlsson never played another NHL game how many non family members would even notice (and I say that with respect to the fact that they play in the best league in the world and have done incredible things with their physical gifts by any standards other than the top 000000.1%)?

So give him a bunch of non-NHLers and tell him to keep them afloat. And then the less attuned fans who primarily notice big chances or hits think he's 'doing nothing'.

I'm not saying he's playing anywhere near his peak, but this isn't a guy who doesn't give a shit and this is still a guy who tips the ledger solidly in our favour whenever he's out there.

I like Hoggy, but if Desharnais, Forbort, and Karlsson never played another NHL game how many non family members would even notice (and I say that with respect to the fact that they play in the best league in the world and have done incredible things with their physical gifts by any standards other than the top 000000.1%)?

I've been a fan of Karlsson since the time of the draft so I definitely would look him up now and then.

But of those players you mentioned, Forbort definitely deserves some respect. He is a 9+ year veteran and given the number of teams he has played for, I think the day he retires will make the news cycle.

Between this and his Cloud 9 suite for kids at the Rog, we're going to lose a good dude.

I'm not sure that I've said this before. I remember reading an article from Dayal a while back about Miller being old school. Basically, take away his alleged tendencies to be hard on teammates and his temper tantrums on the ice and he's the type of player fans and players love.
