Whether it is Vancouver re-signing Miller, or another team acquiring and re-signing him, or him reaching UFA status…

What do people think JT Miller’s next contract will look like? As a top-10 scorer and all-situation player—surely he is sniffing around the $10m AAV mark, right?
Would guess around 7.5.

Miller, though, is peaking everywhere right now. He is legitimately one of the most well-rounded all star forwards in the game today.

We need younger talent that better lines up with our franchise-level youngsters.

Our team is simply not good enough now, and locking up Miller means we can't really make a lot of changes.

I think this is key. He's likely in his career peak right now. That's why it makes sense to trade him. The team isn't close to being a contender and we have an incredibly bare prospect cupboard.

That's also why other fan bases are reluctant to sell the farm for him, which in my opinion is totally reasonable.

If your team is ready to make a run right now Miller is probably going to be worth the risk. A cheap, incredibly effective forward that is currently in his career and statistical peak is a very effective asset to add to a team that is already stacked. Literally a perfect combination.

If your team is not quite there yet the risk increases exponentially. That's why the Canucks need to offload him as his talents are wasted here and he'll never be more valuable than he is right now.

That pretty much sums it up as to why Canucks would even consider moving him.

With that said, what teams would significantly boost their cup chances by adding miller this deadline (so this year/ next year cup runs)? As it may not be the best idea for a team who’s still wrapping up a rebuild/ are 1-2 years away from legitimately competing.

When was the last time a player, in the middle of their prime, producing at a 1.15 point-per-game rate (on pace for 94 points over 82 games), was traded? Then you factor in his contract of $5.25 million expiring in the 2023 offseason and the fact that he's versatile in playing in all situations and all forward positions (53.28% in face offs), and you'd think he should fetch a king's ransom. Blue chip prospect + 1st + B prospect/2nd round pick/average roster player at bare minimum IMO.

I would think his next deal at minimum starts with an 8, I could even see 9, assuming he keeps up his play next year too. He's PPG for the last 3 seasons, plays in all situations and is a big time play-driver. You can argue he may not be worth 9M but if he hits UFA, GMs get loopy.

They're gonna get even loopier if it's announced beforehand when and how much the cap is going up (after post-covid impact, tv deals, etc).

Either at the end of the 22-23 or 23-24 season there's going to be some of the dumbest contracts ever announced due to a jump in the cap.

Mirtle and Siegel from the Athletic did a podcast tonight on the Athletic recapping the Leafs moves.

Mirtle says they talked to Vancouver about Miller. The Canucks wanted Sandin, the Leafs moved on.
Leafs can’t afford to trade a young D for something that would be a luxury item.

Colorado, if they make it to the finals, will probably wish they traded for Miller. Whoever comes out of the east is going to be a juggernaut down the middle.

Wow the Avs should be on this. Not sure how much above a Sandin level prospect they’re looking for though.

Now is the time! Great player but doesn't necessarily fit our window to win. We will see the set New management has towards potential backlash from the fanbase. Getting players to fit the timeline should be the priority without taking away from his value due to some term at a great cap hit. This man wants to win and hopefully teams realize what type of player he has become.

Call me crazy but as a Leafs fan I'd do Sandin for Miller cap permitting a ppg player for 2 cup runs is an insane addition.
We have surplus of D anyway. Dermott left but we got Gio now too. 8 NHL caliber dmen right here.

Miller won’t be a 1C or a 1st Pp player in CO. His numbers are impressive and he’s a perfect Avs fit. But not gonna be for Byram. Behrens or Barron plus a 1st … maybe more could work.

Your offer is about the same if not worse than what Brandon Hagel got...
