Newhook's potential doesn't play 2C on a contender after Kadri leaves this summer. Miller for sure can. So it comes down to whether Sakic thinks Newhook's ready or not.

Can we fill the hole without trading assets in the off-season? If we can get a player who fills the 2C role and keep Newhook sounds a lot more ideal.

If they’re trading Newhook the Avs should be aiming a hell of a lot higher than Miller imo.

I could see Trocheck being a fit for the Avs in free agency. He will likely be the cheapest out of all the top-6 centers available.

Although I imagine many teams are going to be interested.

100%, but I would rather risk slightly overpaying for a UFA than slightly overpaying in a trade. At least when it comes to moving a player like Newhook.

Andrew Copp as well.

Both would be good options and both can transition to 3C fairly well if Newhook makes the jumper sooner rather then later.

Putting myself in the shoes of a Vancouver GM, the ask would be a blue-chip prospect and a first. To me, that takes COL out of the running for sure, as they're not likely to part with Newhook or Byram.

Vancouver holds all the cards here as far as a trade, especially if they're willing to retain money on the salary. Imagine a top-line winger going for $3.5mil x 2? Would be a kings ransom. Vancouver should definitely be open to retaining given how tight some teams are.

What I gather from this board is that no teams blue-chip prospects are available. It will take parting with a player that the team "cant part with" to acquire a player like Miller. If players like Schneider and Newhook (read: players that are actually good and fit the teams needs) aren't available, is Vancouver just supposed to trade their assets for middling quantity-first offers and reclamation projects?

I’d want multiple high picks if I’m Vancouver.
From Avs, would be like 2023 1st, 2022 3rd and Drew Helleson.

You can’t just force a trade, it has to make sense for both teams. Colorado is not looking for a long term 2c. They have one in Newhook. They’re looking for a tweener 2C/3c to take over at the start of next year until Newhook is ready.

Miller would be great to get, but unless Van can sign him long-term for very very cheap, it will not be for Newhook. Avs do have other assets to trade, however if you only want Newhook in the trade, we would need a Newhook coming back (highly touted ELC Center with top 6 C potential).

According to Dreger the Avs are in on JT Miller. Still not sure why Vancouver would trade him.

It's less we want to trade Miller and more Benning had thoroughly destroyed our prospect pool that we really don't have many options. We pretty much have nothing else that isn't already on the Canucks unless low key prospects like Woo, Rathbone and DePietro play FAR above their expected projection.

If van keeps Miller/EP, I can see them trading Horvat in offseason/draft.

I think NYR would be interested as he is a better more physical 2-way player then strome, who he’d replace. Even if he only provides 3/4 of Stromes offensive output, the line should be better as a whole.
Horvat would be insulated as a 2C In NY and be more of a matchup center.
He wouldn’t be asked to play on the PP, or asked to do anything over his head. At 26, he’s in the right age range to be impactful with the rangers older core, as well as the younger core.
And he’s still capable enough offensively to be a 25 goal/ 50 ish point 5v5 2C and contribute on the PK.
What the trade would look like, I have no clue,.....

Blue-chip prospects can be available, when the type of player that is being returned warrants that type of return. Unfortunately for Canuck fans, Miller does not hold that type of value. He is for certain one of the best players in the flat cap era that could be traded, and his extra year on the deal at a very team friendly cap hit just makes him all that much more valuable in a trade. However, it most likely doesn't push him into the category of player that receives blue-chip prospects. Those prospects are reserved for trades where a player of Millers ability is traded with a lot more term on their contracts (think like 4+ years).

Now, the Canuck's GM could certainly hold out for one of these blue-chips prospect, he doesn't seem to be under any deadline to trade Miller. I personally just do not see a team giving up a blue chip prospect for Miller, and for me, this is only because he only has 1 extra year on his contract before he becomes a 30 year old UFA that is going to get the bag on his next deal.

If the Newhooks and Schneiders aren't available you almost have to wait if you are Vancouver IMO.

While I don't think Miller's value will grow as his contract ticks down, I do think the offseason window where a team can talk extension and has more flexibility might offer a better chance to get someone of that caliber

A lot higher? Miller is top12 in scoring and the only centers higher than him are McD, Draisaitl, Stamkos, Kadri, Matthews.

Pretty sure none of them are available for trade and Newhook will be like an add on for a package for those guys.

What?

A "hell of a lot higher than Miller?" He's 12th in NHL scoring and has been top 15 the past 3 years combined. Who tf are you aiming for Connor Mcdavid? HAhahahahahahaha

Miller certainly holds that type of value and easily nets a blue chip prospect lmao.

You guys are insane. Back in 2011 I would have traded blue chipper Cody Hodgson for someone of JT Miller's value in a heartbeat. Stop overvaluing prospects. Miller makes any contending team cup favourites.

Because you want horvat or because you genuinely think Canucks would trade their captain?

I said should they make him available....
I honestly have no clue what they’re going to do.
But it seems if Miller-EP are the 1-2 centers, having Horvat at 3C making almost 6 mill per year isn’t ideal...
Doesn’t matter what I want, it would be a logical choice if they were planning on clearing cap and shifting it elsewhere..
I could absolutely see NYR be interested in getting him as well

It sounds like they have been but the cost seems to be Schneider which they aren't interested in giving away

You’re acting like Miller is a top 15 player, there’s a lot of players below him in that point list I’d rather have and I’d guess you would too. Miller is almost 30 and only had 1.5 years left of team control. Not to mention the ask also isn’t just Newhook, it’s Newhook++. Colorado could land Crouse and Chychrun for the price Canucks fans are asking for Miller.

Blue-chip prospects traded in the past 5 years (my opinion on blue-chip and around Newhook-wise):

Peyton Krebs - received Jack Eichel who has 5 years remaining
Adam Boqvist - received Seth Jones who signs immediately for 8 years
Erik Brannstrom - received Mark Stone who signs 8 year deal
Nick Suzuki - received Max Pacioretty who signs 4 year deal
Mikhail Sergachyov - received Jonathan Drouin who signs 6 year deal

Then there's a couple more prospects that could potentially fall into blue-chip depending on how you viewed them at the time:

Josh Norris - received Erik Karlsson who signs for 8 years
Devon Levi - received Sam Reinhart who signs for 3 years
Adam Fox - in the initial Calgary trade that Hamilton was involved with, Calgary recieved Lindholm and Hanifin - 2 RFAs that sign for 6 years each.

Miller absolutely can be placed in this category if traded right now, as a player he is somewhere in there with all the top players involved in these trades. The draw back with Miller though is that he only has 1 extra year on his contract and an acquiring team can not sign him to a new deal for another 4 months - add on to the fact that his next contract kicks in on when he is 30, and given his play he will be deserving of a substantial raise.

A 90pt 1C with another year at a low CAP hit doesn't net a blue chip prospect. You heard it here folks.
Look at my reply to someone else just before my reply here. The extra year is valuable in a trade, but in a trade involving a blue-chipper it is actually a deterrent.

Miller would likely shift over to wing and be a hybrid centre when needed. Feels like Boeser is the most disposable at the moment though.
