maybe its me, but does anyone think that they are giving Miller a look because they might have another trade in place (B.Boyle) If Miller stays maybe Boyle is the next to go.. Rangers seem like they want to get quicker up front....

I doubt they are going to move Boyle. I don't think he played in the 3rd because Tortorella had a certain feel for the game as he always does and rolled certain lines/players. I think the organization likes Boyle too much. Not just for what he does on the ice but his presence in the locker room.

I liked Miller a lot tonight. Needed to take a couple hours away from the message board after that horror show of a game. But Miller looked damn good. He looked quicker than I expected. There was jump in his game. Whenever he was on the ice, whatever line he was on, they came close to scoring a lot. Kreider also looked great. There was extra jump in this team's game with them.

Boyle is a good depth guy, and when he is playing well, he is a great depth guy. Therefore what are you trading him for? Because he doesn't meet your expectations of what he should be or what he should've been based on when he was drafted as a 1st rounder? He is a solid hockey player. He uses his body down low, stands in front of the net, takes the body, has gotten better on faceoffs. His game is by no means perfect, but then again not many 3rd or 4th liners play a perfect game. He is still young enough and if you think he is overpaid then the majority of 3rd liners in the NHL are very overpaid.

Who sits? Asham. Pretty simple. Asham isn't fighting right now. Callahan is a winger. Sit a winger. Sit Asham, even though he has played okay.

Jeff Halpern. He's been okay with the Rangers, but Asham serves a purpose that Miller doesn't. Halpern PKs and takes faceoffs. Miller does both as well.

What purpose is that? Fighting? Not many teams are fighting after the first few games. The games are so crucial. Team's don't want to risk needless momentum swings that are not in their favor from a lost fight; or even worse instigating penalties. The rangers need to focus on the game hockey and winning a damn game by putting a puck in the net on the PP. And what makes you think Miller will play on the PK? Halpern has continually got better. He will not be sitting.

You'll find that I am easily persuaded.

Arron Asham it is.

have JT Miller in a keeper league as one of my prospects. is just a injury call up/cup of coffee? Curious how Torts plans to use him.
Thanks in advance for any info.

We are very short on depth atm due to injuries, Miller is getting his 5 game look (since he is 19, he can play in the AHL while having his contract slide another year). He was one of our better players on the ice tonight, got promoted to the second line in the 3rd period

If Miller keeps playing the simple game he played last night, that 5 games will turn into 10 easy.

He wasn't a world beater last night, but he WAS effective and created chances while on the PP.

While I would be surprised that he stays the WHOLE year, I am not surprised if he gets a longer look than 5 games...assuming he continues to play well

Yeah, as people said before, he played a similar game to what Dubinsky used to do a couple of years ago. Handled the puck quite a bit and made good decisions, threw hits, was strong along the boards, and got back to break up rushes and play defense. He made at least one really good play backchecking and tying up/taking the puck away from a Devils players that was streaking to the net

As always, the key for young players is consistency, so over 5 games they'll see if he can do it game in and game out and then make a decision. He looked real solid though

Boyle should be a winger and not a center. He is too clumsy and doesn't skate well. He should just forecheck and plant himself in front of the net and perform all his other defensive duties that he does well but he should never be asked to do anything with the puck.

I like Boyle as a winger, but you can't deny his faceoff ability. He's at 52% with 1330 faceoffs taken since the start of last season. You can have him go back to wing after the FO of course.

This I totally agree with. The 4th line should be:

Boyle-Halpern-Asham

Give them 8~10 minutes a night.

Keep this line together until Calahan comes back:

Kreider-Miller-Powe

Give them 10~12 minutes a night

The Rangers will use up the first season of Miller's SPC if he continues his play from last night. He will play six NHL games during the season. He would become arbitration eligible sooner. The NHL hasn't released any details of the transition rules of the CBA with a 48 game season. An accrued season is 40 games in an 82 game season. Miller would need seven accrued seasons to become a group III or 27. Miller needs 4 years pro for arbitration. Maybe 28 will be number of games played for an accrued year in 2013. 48 games is 58.5% of 82. The number of games for the SPC starting went from 10 to 6. 58.5% of 48 is 28.08.

Yeah, he really just looked solid all around, especially for his first game. Seemed to calm down quickly after he wiffed on that first shot lol

e: if anyone can make a video of that it'd be great

It's dumb but I'm fairly excited for him as a player and what he can bring to the team. He worked hard, was competent with the puck, threw hits, kept moving, just seemed like a real solid player and a guy that will be one that you can rely on in all situations

Boyle is an "in the way guy". When he's playing well he is in the other team's way stopping them from scoring. Unfortunately, his skill set is so poor that normally he is in the way of the Rangers scoring as well. His cycles invariably lead to turnovers; not setups or shots or dishes to the point. Just turnovers. The only question is how long can he protect the puck before it is taken away. And that is a problem. I think the league at large values him and he could be moved for a good pick. I would do it in a heartbeat. Being a strong guy in the locker room is not a good enough reason to keep dressing a guy who cannot and will not produce. btw, Asham has more talent with the puck in his little finger than Boyle has in his whole body. Asham needs to be integrated and he needs to dress every night. He will be a big net positive for this team if he is.

He's not supposed to be an offensive dynamo. He's expected to be a 40-60 point two-way player with heart and grit. Good skater. Good strength. Responsible. Team player. Kill penalties. Second PP. Etc.

Basically this^, but good puck distribution + passing based on physical gifts and developing hockey sense, as opposed to Stepan, who seems to work on hockey sense alone.

Anyone else really impressed by his passing skills? The PP looked a lot better when he came on.

Told folks he has underrated playmaking skills.

He's a skilled player. He just also happens to be responsible and physical.

He grew up idolizing Kovalev when he was a kid. When he got to a checking league, he relished the physical play, too.

Just want to say to my detractors, who swore there was NO POSSIBLE WAY, that it was INCONCEIVABLE that the thought of Miller being called up should even be entertained, that I wuz right, and you were wrong.

Sure, I don't get em all right. I have my Tysen Dowzak moments.:D

But hey, I almost single handedly went against the grain and said his speed was adequate enough to have a basic game, and do well with Kreider/Hagelin/Callahan given his puck distribution.

Come on, confession is good for the soul.

And if we make a judgment that the tactical long term move is send the kid down after the 5 max games so that the clock doesn't start ticking until then, I can live with that if that is part of a comprehensive and intelligent strategy to improve this team.

But I stand uncorrected.
I stand vindicated.
Regardless of he stays or he goes due to cap strategy, regardless of what human mistakes he will eventually make, even big ones we all make, my point that he can show something now was fundamentally correct. :yo::handclap:

That's interesting. I wonder what was his team. Seems like not many NA kids grow up idolizing European players unless they're HOFer or something (Jagr/Bure).

Small sample size - and would be very happy if you prediction were to become fruition
