I think it will help JT Miller alot that he not only has the abilitys described above, he is also very fearless with the puck and will at any level from time to time catch D's off guard and take the puck to the net and challenge people 1 on 1. You don't see that often in the NHL, and if Miller pulls of a move or two in that mold it will stick out alot and raise alot of eye browns.

Yeah I've noticed that about Miller too. You don't want him to try to play above his abilities too much but at the same time, he can dangle some guys and make some things happen (which is honestly similar to what Dubinsky could also do at times)

Like I said, I tend to think the Rangers are just taking a look at what they have in the system this year as they continue to think about what possible trades they need to make, but you never know, if Miller comes in and plays like a solid 3rd liner or something maybe the Rangers don't make a move there and save an asset to use on addressing another need.

I understand the similarities between Miller and Dubinsky but Miller is MUCH better with his balance and lower body strength. Dubinsky was laughable as a youngster.

To me Miller has more Ryan Kesler or Brooks Laich similarities than Brandon Dubinsky.

The kids slick hands, stride and powerful lower body are so reminiscent to Patty Kane. Will handle board play very well.

yea I am not sure why people flip out about giving him a shot now, he's done well in the minors and reality is this team needs someone to step up in the bottom 6 so lets give the kid a shot. Its a good learning experience anyway to get a few NHL games in so I dont really see how this hurts. Teams do it all the time.

Cally is back in about 4 games so if he's not doing well then Miller goes down to CT before the Entry level contract kicks in. I still think hes going over 5 games regardless, team needs first like Kreider last yr

To be honest Miller reminds me a lot of Dustin Brown. Just a little less aggressive.

Think that may come though as his skating and power continue to develop. Neither of them have tremendous hands, but good shots and the size and intelligence to get in around the net and bang pucks in.

Would think after miller has a bit more time the stats may be somewhat similar as well. 25/25 or 20/30 type of guy.

I just think everyone's memory of Dubinsky is completely and utterly polluted based on last season. The year before last, Dubinsky was a two-way, top penalty killer who scored 25 goals and 30 assists.

At the time, it looked like he would continue getting better as well, as he had improved every single season in his career to date. Last year he had a bad year and only scored 30 points and now a kid who has never played in the NHL is "much better" at doing things he's yet to ever actually do in this league.

Not following him in Columbus or anything, but a quick stat check reveals that he has zero goals and 4 assists in 9 games.

That would translate to 0 goals and 36 assists for a 36 point season over 82 games. Given his first three seasons of 40, 41, and 44 points, it begins to look more like the 54 point season is the outlier.

I think maybe we should consider Dubinsky's career path as more of a 40 point guy than a 60 point guy.

That's not Patrick Kane.

It also means we dumped the guy in a trade at exactly the right time. Right when he had value because of his youth, while teams thought he might still improve and before teams caught on that he's tremendously overpaid for being a 40 point player. In other year he's 27 and then he's a journeyman, not a 25 year old kid anymore.

If Miller doesn't eventually end up as AT LEAST Brandon Dubinsky it'd be a tremendous disappointment. I like Dubinsky and every team needs players like him but ultimately he's a little overrated around here I think.

Kreider was in a different situation. One game played counted as a full year off the ELC. Kreider was 21. The NHL proposed changing that in the new CBA. They didn't like players signing out college and losing a full year. Agents would demand their clients play one NHL game and the player becomes a free agent soon. Until the actual CBA is released nobody knows if the NHL got that change. The Rangers always liked Miller in the middle. Even when they drafted him. Gorton and Clark felt Miller was better suited for the middle. The Rangers have nothing to lose giving Miller the five game look. If he is not ready and they return him to CT,the SPC slides as long as he does play more than 5 NHL games. Poor mans Mike Richards. A Richards type of player. Someone made that comparison. May have been Clark.

I think Dubi had better offensive talent than Miller at the same age. I agree, Miller is better skating wise and is bigger and stronger at this point.

One of my complaints seeing Miller is he has a tendency to coast too much. I just hope he moves his feet, especially playing defense.

It's a pretty big deal if Miller shows he can play. It gives the Rangers the 3rd line C many fans want and it slides a bigger body in Boyle to the wing. Miller and a healthy Kreider give the Rangers some interesting line combo alternatives.

I hope he succeeds and I agree, with him and Kreider, you now have some players with size, skill and speed.

However, Kreider needs to step up his game and Miller's has yet to be seen in the NHL.

If these two guys can succeed, then this team can be dangerous in the playoffs.

Kreider showed flashes in the playoffs, is older, and was viewed as a key contributor this year to make up for some of the depth lost in the Nash trade. He needs to step it up when he comes back - theres expectations on him.

Miller shouldnt be saddled with any expectations. I hope this is a cup of coffee until the team gets healthy. Im not enamored with the idea of bringing up a 19 year old who could use more seasoning and big minutes in the NHL.

As far as the Dubinsky/Miller comparisons, I feel that Miller has better offensive instincts, is a better playmaker than Dubi, and plays in the offensive zone with far more confidence and comfort. None of that patented Dubinsky "what kind of player am I supposed to be tonight" crap. Miller knows his game and he plays it. Or at least he did before the pros. He hasn't been great this season in Hartford.

Dubinsky led our team in scoring a couple years back, if Miller could even sniff 50 points I would consider it a great pick.

I think a better question is will Dubinsky ever get 50 points again? Miller still needs time, but I think he can be a quality second or third line center - with production to match.

Yup.

Miller was always more valuable as a center. He has underrated playmaking skills, he's responsible. The more involved and active he is the better he is.

Clark and Gorton had always said he's a center. I'm sure they weren't overly thrilled with the fact Plymouth liked to use him on the wing. Still think he should have gone to North Dakota. But that's water under the bridge.

Never understood where the "his future is on the wing" stuff came from. It wasn't from the organization, who continually mentioned he is regarded as a center.

Told folks he would be a one-two year player at most. The Rangers and Miller had an accelerated development path for him. When he was drafted he was a more well rounded, more polished player then Kreider was, who needed more time to round out his game.

The plan was put in place for this player before he was drafted. They wanted a player they could control ASAP. He agreed, he wanted an ELC ASAP. That's why he didn't go to North Dakota.

There is nothing about Miller mentally or in his game that suggests he can't handle it. He MAY not be ready to stay up. But he's close.

Recall, in camp last year, he was arguably one of the Rangers better players. And he could have easily made the club then.

“@drosennhl: Mashinter is going back down to Connecticut to play for the Whale tonight. Rangers weren't sure if Powe would arrive in time but he did.â€

Mashinter sent down.

That must confirm one of Kreider/Callahan are back in the lineup, then.

Bickel is in a red jersey, meaning if he plays, he's a defenseman.

Gaborik
Richards
Nash
Hagelin
Stepan
Pyatt
Boyle
Halpern
Asham
Powe
Miller

That's 11 forwards.

Also, indicative of how they feel about Miller.

He is playing tonight.

They could have sent him down and kept Mash.

Not a big fan of this, to be honest. Mashinter's role would be clear-cut -- was looking forward to him getting a chance to round out the 4th line.

Im pretty apprehensive about having Kreider and Miller in the lineup together. Both players are developing and Im not sure theres enough minutes available to advance their development.

I'd be much more at ease with this move if it was October rather than February. The shortened season doesnt leave much time for experiments with younger players.

Or they are sticking to their original plan of giving miller a couple games now.

Mash could have just been called up in case Powe wasent ready in time.

I think Kreider is playing. Gilroy probably scratched. Bickel needed for his fighting for this one.

It's not like they are both here permanently. Both miller and Kreider can be sent down and given more playing time whenever. Miller especially probably won't stick beyond a couple games.
