He has now missed something like half of the possible games over the last 3 seasons and had multiple shoulder issues dating back to College hockey.

I think it's best to assume he will either be LTIRetired or not the star he looked like previously when he paced for 40+ goals, and be pleasantly surprised if he mounts an amazing comeback.

Hoping for the "cure" is highly optimistic so I tend to agree that he will most likely not be the same as before, not as productive and avoiding hits. Instead of an $8M player, we will likely have a $4M player at best, part of the time.

Even if Norris' shoulder is 100% physically, what do all these surgeries and setbacks do to his mental game? Will he even have confidence in his shoulders or will he avoid contact? Sens did the right thing finding a much better surgeon for him, but they also need to go the extra step and get him a sports psychologist or counselor, as well. Make sure the mental side of thing is taken care of, as well.

Again its good to be optimistic, but Norris really took a long time before he really started to engage and he was only just starting when he reinjured the shoulder. We can only speculate on why that was (pain, discomfort, confidence) but .. Its hard to have solid faith in him rebounding to his top form. Sens have invested in him they'll want him to be a top 6 contributor and they will want him to compete hard. We don't have room for soft perimeter players making 8m per.

The team should take a wait and see approach with him post surgery and provide him all the support he needs to get back to form.

I have a contact that is directly connected to a team dr. The reality is that he will never been 100 percent and there will always be pain the amount of scar tissue isnt removable. Its about Norris adjusting to the injury and playing with it. Its possible but to think he will ever be the same as he was is wishful thinking. 3 shoulder surgeries before 25 is an insane amount of horrid injuries. That effect the entire body. Strength of surrounding muscles, his back over compensating etc. Thats not even taking into account the mental toll.

Not to say that its impossible for him to play again, he can. But he needs to be very resilient and not rush it like he did under the previous regime. The amount of blunders Dorion and co have is honestly hard to comprehend. So many decisions made to try and save his job and not for the betterment of the organization, players and fanbase.

I agree that its good to be optimistic and there is reason for that, but being realistic about it is the only way to approach the situation if they want to be able to react to it and be proactive.

Staios was asked about his progress just the other day,

He said something to effect of he is progressing really well, is actually in the building today, and will be ready for training camp.

So basically nothing, because if it's going well, he'd say that, if it's going poorly, he'd say that

Sounded a bit like last summers reports.. This is going to be a wait and see. It was on track then it wasn't , then it didn't feel right and he played but did not seem to be all that confident in it. Hopefully the operation goes better if that was the issue.

Well, the surgery has a 4-6 month recover which puts him at month 6 completed mid Sep, so ready for training cap has pretty much always been the expectation.

The difference is that the person giving updates last year was a certain someone named Pierre, who probably didn’t even check in with the training staff or Norris before giving out timelines.

Snarkiness aside, it’s a valid point though, a doctor wouldn’t be sharing this detail with your friend, and it sounds like you are passing it off as solid information.

I suppose Josh can be talking and that info is being passed, but that would be second hand information prone to being misconstrued, especially when passed by non-clinically trained individuals.

There are other players who have had to have a few shoulder surgeries in their young career and have turned out fine.

Im guessing it never felt stable to him, leading to apprehension, it would explain the odd way he was good to go but not good to go at the start of the season and the play style.

Assuming the team Dr is in Ontario its PHIPA not HIPAA.

But more importantly, it's entirely possible for the Doctor to talk in generalities without breaking confidentiality. It's public knowledge that Norris has three surgeries and it could have been discussed with @bert in generalisations about someone having three surgeries like that.

Actually, it sounds alot like what my Dr warned me about before my first shoulder surgery...
