I think the futility of our recent forward draft picks has gotten to people's heads. They forget that most young players aren't actually gifted opportunities, they earn them.

Does anyone remember Parise's rookie season? It was not smooth sailing. He spent a decent amount of time in the bottom six. That didn't stop him from becoming a terrific player.

I didn't think to double check, but just looking through some shift charts, he was still playing with Tedenby & Clarkson/Palmieri throughout most of October.

It was November 2nd against the Maple Leafs that Henrique debuted on the top line with Parise & Kovalchuk.

Oh weird, must've misread something in the article I read, when I compared it to the game logs.

ORLY? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Bernier . I also don't understand the infatuation with JJ. We all want him to pan out, but he has been around for a while and shown me nothing to indicate it is ever going to happen.

Bernier was a promising player when he was drafted...he even put up decent numbers his first couple of years...his hockey sense was never good and he has never progressed because of it...but he can still play a bull in a china shop kind of game.

There is a huge danger picking a power forward early in my opinion...a lot of times these guys are drafted on brute strength...brute strength becomes meaningless in the NHL when everyone is as big and strong as you are and it's not an advantage anymore.

Yeah drafting on size and strength in the early rounds is pretty stupid. It's a nice add-on if a player has it, but he needs the requisite point production and hockey sense first.

Well not everyone is as big an strong, that's what seperates a power fwd from the other guys. And sure Bernier did not live up to his billings, but is there any study that says big guys are more likely to bust then smaller/average?

But who is arguing that we should gift JJ an oppurtunity? My argument has been that he was at first rushed, and then this past season sat the pine while inferior players stunk up the joint. On a non playoff team.

My feeling precisely. That's how you end up with Hugh Jessiman and Dylan McIlrath at number 10...LOL. and people wanna talk about Devils drafting?

The league was also different when Bernier was drafted. A lot more physical battling was needed to score down low and speed was more easy to hinder.

The very fact that he couldn't distance himself enough from those "inferior" players to play over them doesn't worry you? Do you think the coach just sat him for the hell of it?

For the hell of it? No. Mostly because he is Swedish and under 30 years old.

I saw the confirmed with link, and thought this was a new thread with new news.

I was hoping I was gonna see "confirmed with link: Steve Bernier retires from the NHL" or something like that. I'm really bummed now.

Why did the coach play a guy who was worst on the team in +/- and had a grand total of 3 goals, 78 games this year? Played him on Elias's wing and on the powerplay? What was the coach's thinking? Can't say I know the answer to that.

Not to make this about Bernier. but you know how many goals he had over his last 50 games played? Zero.
