Why would he get a two year deal? He's basically a 14th forward atm

Maybe he did actually get assurances of playing time a la Larsson? I'm actually shocked he's STILL an RFA at the end of it though, must be three years before UFA kicks in. Still I thought he'd want to keep his overseas options open since he's basically in jail here.

I love the idea that we signed youth and our former first round pick. However, I won't hold my breath waiting for him to have a breakout season. First, will he be giving a fair chance to play and second, will he take advantage if is given a fair amount of playing time. It' s the first option I see hindering this kid the most.

Pete and Lou just love Vets. I'm still in shock that we may have Larsson, Merrill and Gelly in the lineup at the same time, but that's probably because Larsson and Gelly have to be on the team or go through waivers.

I also think the fact that we've missed the playoffs in back to back years has Pete and Lou seeing that we need to start moving towards the future. I mean, would we have bought out Volch if he was still playing well and the team was winning?

But I think JJ will be given a real chance. And I think if he can stay healthy he'll perform. But I do wonder if he can stay healthy.

He's been given many chances but cannot stay healthy for more than a week. I think he can be an effective 3C, but he has to somehow avoid injuries.

Honestly I still think his ceiling is higher than that of a 3C. I see a lot of selective memories around here when it comes to Josefson's skillset. Everyone likes to remember the stints he had with garbage linemates on garbage lines playing garbage minutes, almost all of which were after coming back from significant injuries. No one likes to remember the first line C in Albany putting up better numbers than Henrique, or the kid who Deboer had centering Kovalchuk in his sophomore season (and who didn't look at all out of place) until he got injured yet again, or the guy that Lemaire COULDN'T stop raving about.

Injuries have really defined Josefson's lack of success more than anything else. There's still plenty of time for him to grow into a productive middle-6 player, he just needs an extended chance at C where he's always looked more impressive than his time at wing. Hopefully this contract is a sign that he's going to get that chance, and hopefully someone remembered to inform Deboer about it, too. His awkward development path could even be a blessing in disguise down the road. Lou might be able to lock him up at 4-5 years (obviously only in the case that things go right for him) at an incredibly cheap cap hit, and I don't doubt Josefson would sign a 5 year deal for almost any amount of money at this point.

EDIT: I didn't mean to specifically accuse YOU of having a selective memory, CL :)

I agree with most of this but the problem is he never really stood out or should I say distinguished himself. Beyond the injuries, he really hasn't done much with the time he has had.

He has had quite a few opportunities over the last three seasons and his appearances have always been just ho-hum...That being said, I think the last 9 games he played at the end of the season was the most determination he's shown since he has been in New Jersey. His faceoffs were strong toward the end of the year, he played with a lot of jump and seemed to be creating a lot more. You hope that continues.

But in 1/3rd the games! And playing with Cam Janssen! :D

Yeah, I think at this point, anyone who disagrees with that is ignoring reality a bit. But a lot of times that sorta ends up being the way 2nd and 3rd line centers play, especially if their game is more about responsible defense and vision/IQ before dynamic offense and physical skills.

I think Josefson's ceiling is a playmaking/2-way guy who can soak up minutes on a shutdown line, putting up anywhere between 25 and 55 points in a season. Even if he hits the low end of that, that's still approaching 2nd-line player territory.

We've seen flashes of all the different things that make him a potentially useful player: vision, defense, skating, passing and vision, hockey IQ; we've just yet to see them really come together all at once. If he can pull that off, the Devils will have managed to pull a valuable player back out from near-bust purgatory. If not, he's still a potentially valuable 3rd/4th line center down the line, maybe filling the "Marcus Kruger" role down the line.

Once again, I find myself sabotaging my own opinions:

That sounds a hell of a lot like Zharkov, doesn't it?:laugh::help::shakehead:shakehead

Lou and Pete have also talked openly about the importance of having 'young legs' out there on the ice. I hope JJ gets serious ice time with quality vets like Elias so he can actually grow.

Jagr is also a big fan of Josefson, for what it's worth.

Josefson has 40 points in 62 career AHL games, which is pretty good. He shows flashes on the big team, and just turned 23 in March. There's still hope.
