Life goes on. We were prepared for life without the guy before we even knew he was still hurt. Sign hainsey or someone of the ilk and move on. Don't trade skinner just because of this though.

Mezaros has been injured the past two seasons. He missed 20 games two seasons ago, and only played 11 games last season. Has he even been cleared to play yet?

Go big or go home.

Offer sheet Pietrangelo, surrender two 1sts+2nd+3rd and call it a day.

My first response to this is, no way, that is so dumb....

Then......I sit.......analyze.....and think.....

Why not do it, by the time any of those guys are ready to play from those draft picks, Semin, Staal and Ward are all 35 anyway. Might as well be good at some point.

Exactly. Pietrangelo is either going to be a near-generational defender (ala Chara, Yandle, et al) or maybe half a grade below that. What exactly is the downside?

St louis would easily match it. We don't have the space for him PLUS resigning Faulk and Tlusty soon

Why not....either that or piss off all the fans with a last place finish.....again. Time to start worrying about the team, and not worrying about other GM's feelings.

Yeah, that's definitely a false dichotomy.

There are other options than sending a desperation offer sheet to Pietrangelo or finishing last. BTW, we didn't finish last last season and we haven't for quite awhile (division or conference).

We would probably have to find a way to clear salary this season to sign him to any realistic offer sheet. Pietrangelo has already turned down a long term deal reportedly worth 6 million a year. So we're looking at having to offer around 7+ million per year to even get him to sign the offer sheet to begin with. And if he signs, all the sudden we have very little cap space for any type of deadline maneuvering. Then we leave our RFAs next offseason ripe for getting an offer sheet themselves.

I'd love to have Pietrangelo, but we all know he's not a very realistic option.

JR can't last too much longer. ;)

True enough. And if our future GM wasn't also part of the current staff (assuming Francis takes over), I'd totally be for JR's last hurrah to be screwing over other GMs. Then have another GM take over and say "Hey, that was the last guy. We can still deal".

But since Francis is part of the current staff, his plausible deniability is gone.

Solution to the problem;

To Carolina:

Dustin Byfuglien

To Winnipeg:

Elias Lindholm

Done and done!

No thanks..

Still think Carolina could make the playoffs even without Pitkanen. Maybe that's just me being more hopeful than realistic though.

Are you guys that high on Lindholm? I flip him for Buff in a hearbeat. Near-elite player that fills an immediate need > possibilities.

In what world is Byfuglien anywhere near elite?

Not elite, but I for one would not mind having him on the Canes that's for sure. Just not at the expense of a Lindholm or a Skinner. Also I wouldn't think he'd be available unless there was an overpayment.

I hate to push the panic button but with JK being let go just days before camp and now this, yeah I don't like how this new season is starting.

Does anyone REALLY know what JK was doing for the team and the material positive impact he may have had? Worrying about losing him is fruitless here.

Apparently he's reported to camp between 30 and 40 pounds lighter than last year, ie. 235. That's a start.

Over the last 3 seasons, he is 2nd in D-man pts (behind OEL) and goals (behind Shea Weber), and 6th in assists (Behind Letang, Suter, Yandle Karlsson, and Keith), and has managed to keep his +/- at -8 or or better throughout his career, despite playing on mostly terrible Atlanta/Winnipeg teams. He also, compared to most of the other high goal-scoring defenseman, scores more of his goals at ES and less on the PP)

Yes please say 'Canes fans :)

Over and above the picks we'd have to surrender, Alex and Faulk is literally our top pair for the next 10-12 years. That's what you call stability.

These boards sometimes. Someone makes a half-joking comment about Pietrangelo as a RFA, and all of the sudden we're getting our hopes up.

I'm expecting something in the next couple of days. I'm guessing if they want to bring someone in they'll want them here soon for the start of camp.

I still don't think Morrow's a possibility. I think our forward group for next year is under contract already (with the exception of Dvorak, who I do think will make the team as a PKer/4th liner).

It's fun to throw around these ideas, and I do think some of them are good. But the more I think about it the more I think it's exceedingly likely we sign Hainsey and JR likes our group.
