Jonathan Quick

Quick is clutch and my favorite King. If Lombardi were offered a great young player on an affordable contract than I think he would entertain the idea of trading Quick and rolling with Jones. I don't think you need a big money goalie in today's game.

I think we need that big time NHL goalie to win in the playoffs... but first we gotta make the playoffs...

Right now, we just need to retool a few expiring contracts, let the boys rest and reboot for the next season.

What do you think about Quick's season? Has your opinion changed about him?

Going into the season my opinion was Quick was the best Goalie in the NHL. This season was a struggle. The Defense was a struggle so can not say it's just about Quick but curious are you as confident in him after this season as you where before the season started?

first 41 terrible
last 41 amazing

if he was consistent throughout the season we wouldn't be where we are today (despite our other weaknesses)

I'm being nitpicky, but he was literally the best goalie in the league for the first month + and still near the top for a while after that. It went to hell in December and January for Quick for a variety of reasons, but he was nails at the beginning and down the home stretch. If he were a .940 goalie all year we would have made the playoffs obviously but that's unfair to count on.

I'm a bit rattled that this roster wasted a year of prime Quick. He seemed to get beat a lot more on shots from the point with traffic in front than in years past. He didn't seem to be as willing to get low and glance around screens. He used to be far and away the best in the league at that. I'm sure some of that regression comes from the defensemen not clearing lanes as well though. Big part of it.

I never get mad at Quick. You can always tell he's angrier at himself than anyone else is, which you certainly can't say for all (most?) players.

Slightly off-topic, but I remember in game 5 or 6 of the series against Vancouver in 2010, Frolov had a clean-cut breakaway and just waffled it right into Lou's chest. Skates back to the bench, no head shakes, just looked zoned out. No emotion. I was yelling at the TV. Nothing more frustrating than when it looks like they don't care.

Quick knows a thing or two about the rage, if there was ever any concern.

Most people forget how hot the Kings started out until the voynov debacle happened

Well, as I remember it they actually had a garbage start to the season but was bailed out by Quick and the Carter line being red hot. They were outplayed for many of those wins.

They were being ridiculously outshot during that stretch but pulling out wins. I remember people were afraid that somehow the Kings had forgotten how to play Kings hockey in terms of possession as their Corsi numbers were horrid. Of course, that self-corrected. Unfortunately, other aspects did them in this season in the end.

Our other weaknesses take precedent over Quick having a stretch of inconsistency.

I don't recall a single game last season that Quick was main reason why we lost. Of course, he did not play lights out every single game, but he was fine overall and incredible in the final stretch. I would not trade for any other goalie in this league in big games. The only other goalie that comes close in the playoffs is Lundquist.

if anything, the world saw the importance of goaltending to this team. We may not have more high-end talent up front than other contenders, and our defense as a whole should be top-5 at worst, but when that fails, the goalie is the last line of defense. When he plays his best, we win. When he wavers even a little, we lose. The 2012 Kings steamrolled everyone, but sometimes what gets lost in that is how well Quick had to play at times because everyone's too focused on the 'easy path'. In 2013 we had no business advancing and it was clear when Quick got Blackhawks'ed in the WCF. In 2014, he was up and down, but when he was on, we never lost.

I know it's captain obvious level material talking about goalie=team, but I'm saying it in reverse; just as the goaltender is subject to the team in front of him, Quick can cover our faults.

The Kings played the #1, #2 and #3 seeds in the West in 2012. When did that turn in to an easy path? I've seen that mentioned lately and it makes absolutely no sense. I guess they needed to beat the #1 team in the East in the Finals to have the toughest road possible for the entirety of the playoffs.

Edit: Phoenix was the #3 seed as division winner? 6th highest point total. Still beat #1 and #2 in the first two rounds. Another nightmare in the Central that year. 4 100 point teams.

That's why I put it in quotations. A lot of the argument at the time was that Quick was putting up great numbers against non-elite offensive talent and that look what happened when he ran into the Chicago juggernaut. I'm definitely not the one making that argument, just putting it out there.
