So he was good for 50 games and slumped for 30 games. At 24 years old I will give him time and see what hes got. 2 years ago he played center with no help and got 50+ points.
If the PP gets going drouin's point totals will rise, if not I expect another 50 point season.

50-points is 50-points, style points don’t matter, that’s what he’s getting paid for. People want an 80-point player who’s signed for a 50-point player category

Always recall the beast play during playoff OT that led to a loss as Kovalev went for a “free skate in the Dzone and forgot he had teammates on the ice”...

From all the examples you could have used you went with the 2004 playoffs? Alexei Kovalev went on to elevate his game quickly after that incident in 2004. It might not have been his best moment but I think what most fans remember is how he picked himself back up and went on to become a pretty big factor in us eliminating Boston.

Drouin will never be in the same league as Alexei Kovalev.

Drouin has a very good contract for a 50-60 point player - lower than the going rate.

I get people expect more looking at his skill set but Drouin is very comparable (stats-wise) to Kovalev at the same age....similar enigma as well it seems.

 for UNRESTRICTED free agents.

Not a 22 years old RFA who had proven next to nothing.

I have to ask, do they have casual purple pants fridays at the PR office?

For what it's worth I remember when the Oilers trio(at the time) got 6 mil for 6 years. Take Eberle for instance, he got 10% of the cap when he signed. Years later Drouin is an RFA and gets 5.5 which was 7.53% of the cap. The 10% equivalent would've been 7.3 mil per.

Drouin is not overpaid to me but I don't think he's underpaid either. It seems fair.

It's a bit of a weird one imo...

On pure stats, ignoring actual impact or overall contribution to team success, then yeah, he's not "overpaid".

But 5+M for a player relegated by the coaching staff to bottom -6 role & 12-14Min/game for the last month of a season where the team is fighting for a playoff spot until the last week?

That's a bad contract to be stuck with.

It was a pretty bad contract at the time he signed it... Both the term & $ amount... BC he only had 1 productive season under his belt & had major attitude red flags. He was a prime candidate for a forced bridge deal, not for a long term deal at a UFA premium.

MB bet, poorly, that he'd break out and the deal would end up being a huge bargain... Instead, for 3 straight seasons our most expensive forward is an underwhelming contributor who puts up decent points but is a net negative on the ice when it matters most...

I guess every team have a Drouin in their roster. Pittsburg have a new one. Since last part of last season (and now), he's bad, he's lost on the ice. He have to recreate his play to fit Clode's expectations and he just can't. His nature is skate fast with the puck and deke as many as he can. Into reality when he try he makes turnovers. So he have to become a kindda Doug Jarvis defensive expert to survive. It's against his nature. He have all the physical abilities to be a decent 2 way winger (or center) but his brain is not formatted for.

I dunno what's gonna happen but his line will suffer. Whatever you place him left of Domi or KK, it's gonna be bad for the whole line. Clode might reduce his ice time to 8 minutes and give him time on PP. This is the last solution because I doubt he can be tradable.

But some times miracles happen. He can have a nice offensive flash that last more than 2 shifts. So if you guys are beleivers of some divinity, get on your knees and pray.

Even if he's our most paid forward, I just don't think Drouin makes a (positive) difference to the team. So having him in the line up or not doesn't make much difference. Yeah he produces 50 pts but I don't value much his points. Danault had a great season with his 53 pts, Drouin had a bad season with his 53 pts.

For me he brings nothing to the team, he's the outsider that doesn't push the same way as the others. He won't be missed the moment he leaves the team.

You know that Kovalev was 31 years old in 2004, and that he didnt reach the 60 pts mark before his 27th birthday right, not saying JD will have a better or similar career but he is only 24

You can say that....''Drouin will never be in the same league as Alexei Kovalev'' all you want but if you compare them at same age it look pretty similar

Believe it or not, our PP gets even worse with Drouin gone. I think people are so frustrated with his 5/5 play that they are exaggerating it to unreasonable levels.

Hard to say if he gets to the next level as he moves through his prime years. And most comments I see on here are saying get rid of him for whatever we can right now. That is ridiculous cause his trade value will not get lower and why wait it out for a bit longer while the kids show us what they got. Also gives us a chance to see Drouin in his prime and if (look up the word if) he can get to the next level.

Hero or Zero in Montreal... We always need someone to throw under the bus eh. Imagine trading him for cheap today and he is a pt/game player for another team in his prime on a $5.5M cap hit? Pretty sure the same people who would trade him for cheap today would criticize Bergevin for making a move like this.

That's why we should compare him to Mackinnon, Barkov, Lindholm, Monahan, Domi, Horvat, Mantha.. and he still looks bad. Drouin still the same way as he did 5 years ago. Still the same problems and flaws. He has shown basically no progression in his game in the last few eyars.

The excuse of "he's still young" will soon expired it already has for me but I'll give him one more year.. at 25 he should be on his prime. Let's see how he does. I still hope he becomes the player we all want him to be but the chances are pretty slim.

Great point! We will have to wait and see

Those people who say Drouin will never be in the same league as Kovalev will disappear and hide if Drouin bust out in his prime. But if he doesn't they will be in your face real hard trying to say "I told you so". What they don't realize is what's the big deal? Worse case, we have a 50-60 pts forward who specialized on the PP for $5.5M cap hit. It's not a terrible situation but frustration in the 5/5 play is getting the best of some fans.

Nobody suggested that we get rid of him. We should invest his 5M$ in something more useful. Put Byron in the same offensive situation, he'll get you 45-50pts while bringing much more. I really don't think this team needs Drouin. He's easily replaceable.

Yes, like say by Ryan Poehling... there is a ton of 50 pt players in the league.

A whole year? generous. Should be in 5-10 game increments,as most players should be evaluated. Habs have a lot of fingers crossed at the moment. So many questions to be answered and do they have a a contingency plan if too many are less than expected?

I will say this, Drouin does have value on the PP, which Montreal sucks at. He is their best PP player. While Byron's better at ES, Drouin isn't really all that replaceable on the PP ATM.

It's not pretty similar since 53 points in 1998 isn't worth the same as 53 points in 2019. The former is a top60 finish and top100 for the later.

Drouin best finish to date was top80, hence he didn't demonstrate the same ability to keep up with the pace of the league he is playing in.

Your post is already better than the one i was quoting cuz you compare him with guy's of the same age, still if you look at Mantha his productions is about the same as JD so far, Lindholm is a year older and he had is breakout season only last year, prior to that it was pretty simalar too, Horvat similar in pts but ALOT more responsible defensively not the same kind of player i'll give you this one, Domi.....wel before last year you wouldnt have mentioned him.....Mckinnon,Barkov and Monahan i only dream that JD can be as good as them they are already stars players

The funny thing about you mentioning Mantha is, if he was a Habs i'm sure he would be the whipping boy here too

For a "playmaker" Drouin sure had a hard time being consistent with his passes, especially on the PP. Every 20 passes he would make an incredible one, but wouldn't connect on easy ones.

A little misleading because of missed games.

Pro-rated to 82 games, he would have hit 60 in his 20 year old season. Further, he would have averaged 60 in his 3 seasons from 22 to 25 yrs old. In other words, he was a 60 point player right off the bat.

Sure. But he's also been far and away the most consistent producer on the PP. And errant passing isn't always on the passer (especially on the PP). It can also be on the person receiving the pass not being in the right position.

JD spoke with the English media and then snubbed the French one today, so that should go over well.
The guy absolutely has to be moved...he just cannot handle the market he is in, which demands more. If the franco media turn on him, he will end up in the asylum crying in da corner.
