Jonathan Drouin is 100% finished as an NHLer

With regards to his production on the PP in his defense when he is on PP1 he hardly touches the puck because it mostly moves between Mack, Makar and Mikko. When he is on PP2 it is also hard for him to get points because that unit is lucky to get 20 secs per PP opportunities so it is hard for him to get points there as well.

His production could certainly be better 5v5 but he has been playing a lot better in the last 10-15 games. He is much more engaged and creating scoring opportunities. RyJo and Tatar are much more of a problem on this team.
Even so, a 24 point pace for a non-role-player is basically typical numbers for an AHL scorer that isn't good enough to be an NHL regular getting called up. As someone who follows the Canucks, crappy tweener fodder like Sheldon Dries is capable of something close to that, even without PP time, and there are similar "not-good-enough" equivalents of that every year.

It's not even necessarily a comment on Drouin specifically (who could have transformed into a role player for all I know), just a fundamental fault in the sentiment that "24 points is still an NHL player" in general.

I watched him last game and thought he was working hard and did some creating. Didn’t notice any of the issues people give him a hard time time about aside from production. I think he’s good value for what they paid and where they can play him. I didn’t see any work issues or shying away from responsibility.

He’s been ok. If he was John Drune, 3rd round pick from years back making near league minimum and playing decent bottom six minutes - nobody would raise a thread like this. I can think of worse ways an NHL team could spend $850,000 of cap hit.

He’s most certainly still an NHL player.

Now is he anything all that notable? No. But anybody who had the perspective that Drouin was about to be “unlocked” next to MacK or on this Avs team…that kind of expectation is on you as a fan ignoring years of track record now.

The Avs certainly didn’t see him as anything more than a depth option. That’s why he is paid what he is. That’s why he plays 12 minutes a night. And he’s been just fine for that role. It’s not like we owe him a $3.225 million cap hit bonus on our bill for 2024-25. ;)

I don't disagree much with any of this. I just wanted to address the "he should have more points because he is getting PP" comments from a few posters.

Low-information main board trolls strike again. Thanks for your assessment of the player, but it's lacking in accuracy and perspective. OP is a tourist and doesn't actually watch any team consistently, so his knowledge is just always incomplete at best.
I agree- It seems like HF Boards are filled with guys who troll.

One the prospects I was the most hyped for. He looked like the next Patrick Kane circa draft year. Was the fastest player at the all star competition in his rookie year. He’s still one of the most talented player in the league. His shot is non-existent and is predictable in that regard but players can’t be too aggressive on him because he will defeat you on a 1-on-1.

If there was one place he could have revived his career it as going to be in Colorado. Having MacKinnon is doing wonders for him. When your superstar #1C knows first hand how much talent you have, has confidence in you, and knows how to push your buttons in the right way it can be a world of difference for a guy like Drouin.

I can't say 100% because I'm not in the dressing room, but I would almost guarantee having MacKinnon being as good as he is, having the confidence in him, and pushing him to be himself on the ice are major reason for this turnaround. I'm not sure any other superstar in the league would give this guy as much confidence as MacKinnon seemingly has. He isn't setting the league ablaze, but like others said 10 in his last 10 and its not just secondary pp assists either, he's making an impact

Its almost like when you start a new job and might be way out of your comfort zone, but your boss is a childhood friend who knows you have the capabilities to do the job, you just need to be reminded of your skills from time to time and given the proper tough love when necessary. If some boss you didn't know did it, it might have the opposite impact. But since its your buddy and you trust him 100% you are able to give it your all and not take things the wrong way.

It's incredible how consistent Drouin has been -- he doesn't stray from c 0.5ppg no matter what situation, what team, what line mates, what injury. Unfortunately that isn't sufficient for top6 minutes if he doesn't bring another element (physicality, forechecking, defensive acumen, etc) but it doesn't mean he's done as an NHLer. It means he's a depth option. If COL is happy with him, that's great.

the demise of jonathan drouin has been greatly exaggerated.
Thick body. Lots of skill. Just needs to play in a market where very few people care about hockey, so he can be free from the game away from the rink. He can rest his mind.

Read some of the previous comments. He's doing this now.

Its not as simple as that. He's had to earn ice time by doing the gruntwork, and since hes been doing that, hes been rewarded with ice time with the top 6.

His stat line is severely misleading because, as others have said, he was stuck on a very unproductive low-effort line. He had to fight his way out of that and earn top 6 minutes by playing hard. You have to give the guy credit for putting the work in.

When hes playing next to MacKinnon, that helps a lot since MacKinnon's speed alone often creates time and space for him. You also have the other very skilled players, which helps.

As time goes by and he's spending more time with the top 6, he seems more and more comfortable like there might be even more there.

As a fan of Jonathan Drouin - I'd like to thank OP for making this thread on December 11th.

Prior to Dec 11th:

26 games - 3 goals, 5 assists,8 points. Pace of 9 goals and 25 points over 82 games

After OP's thread on December 11th:

10 games - 3 goals, 7 assists, 10 points. Pace of 25 goals and 82 points over 82 games.
Lol you should pay him like a first liner then, that’ll help your long term cup chances a solid 3x7

And then that boss is like “here’s some chickpeas and a crazy exercise routine, I will fight someone for you, let’s go to work!”

Seriously, your post makes a lot of sense, glad dude is having success again- dude with the mental struggles he’s had, hope he kinda gets to write a positive chapter here.
