Do you tell your children that right after getting them back from being abducted by a stranger?

Do you tell people to hike in groups when they're in the hospital after being mauled by a mountain lion?

This isn't directed at you but there's people in this thread who've made endless posts trying to justify how focusing on the ways the Gaudreau's may have put themselves in a dangerous situation isn't victim blaming. What exactly is it they think they're accomplishing? Do they really think this is the place and time to talk about bike safety?

No matter how much they deny it, the most obvious implication is "yes but..." They were hit by a drunk driver. Yes but.. by cycling on a rural road at dusk they put themselves in danger. Like, what other f***ing point could there be to make?

Two young men were just killed while biking. But they think someone needs to point out right now that it can be dangerous?

Seriously people. Do a little f***ing self reflection. Go read the posts from Gaudreau's family. Go look at all the tributes. Then go back and read your stupid posts about bike safety and walking in the park at night analogies. See how you feel about them.

Pretty sure it's been repeated ad naseum that what happened to the Gaudreau's is the fault of the drunk guy. It's just been stated that riding your bike on the road at night can be dangerous. Literally not a single soul has blamed them for anything since they were struck by a drunk driver making an illegal maneuver. You don't need to white knight here. There's nothing to crusade about and nobody is personally posting TO the Gaudreau's right now.

As for the first points, I would advise my children to avoid certain situations because of morons like the drunk driver, yes. No I wouldn't go to the hospital to talk to people who were attacked by mountain lions, but that seems to be the level of fantasy you need to engage in to get worked up about this simple, basic and innocuous comment.

It's mindblowing the degrees of tone-deaf silliness in this thread.

I'm not blaming the victim.... but had the Gaudreaus made sensible bike-riding decisions they'd be alive today.

Like what the actual f***...

Luckily no one here is talking to the Gaudreau family, so this is irrelevant.

Do they really think this is the place and time to talk about bike safety?

All of us feel varying degrees of terrible about this, all of us are doing varying degrees of mourning, none of us are actually firsthand affected by the loss of a father, husband, son, brother, etc in this specific incident. So yeah, shouldn't be a problem to discuss safety.

If talking about safety when it's most likely to sink in saves one person on this board from a tragic accident, or if it causes one person on this board to reconsider their actions at some point down the line which ends up not costing another person their life, it was worth it to talk about safety in a setting that isn't actually insensitive to the Gaudreau family, who isn't reading through this thread right now.

I think its fair to not put the mans facial expressions under a microscope to determine the strength of his character at this time.

I'm not sure he could have an expression that would please anyone at this time

It has nothing to do with expressions.

His biggest concern in that exchange with the judge seemed to be the fact that he would be stuck in jail an extra day because it's a long weekend.

If I had just killed 2 people 12 hours prior, that would be the last thing I'd be worried about.

Except we don't have any facts. For all we know, they could have had full reflective gear, lights and everything.

Unless your suggestion is simply to not bike at all?
Did you see the road they were biking on?? Barely enough room for 2 cars let alone cyclists

This is devasting news on so many fronts. Johnny and his brother were to be groomsmen at their sister's wedding. Both Johnny and his brother were married. Johnny, had two kids both under the age of two. The drunk driver says he had 5-6 beers. I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the Gaudreau family and friends. We as hockey fans, will miss Johnny Gaudreau not only as a player, but great human being, a loving father, sibling, and son. RIP Johnny and Matthew.

I agree that's almost definitely what happened. The report from the trooper says the guy even admitted that's exactly what happened.

That's why I think it's stupid to blame the cyclists. That driver was a reckless road raging idiot.

The fact that he admitted to it and seems to be showing no remorse proves that he's either a sociopath or he genuinely believes that it was an "accident", and that the cyclists probably shouldn't have been there, so it's not his fault.
I'll be 100% honest. I've been bothered by cyclists before when they do dumb stuff, and gotten pissed at them. I just had 3 of them the other day riding along the shoulder of a bridge that has a 45mph speed limit. I'm in the left lane, and they're on the right shoulder, with a full right lane separating us. I have to turn left at the upcoming light at the end of the bridge, and we're getting pretty close to it, and I'm getting close to them. As we're approaching the light, they don't look behind them, they just all 3 stick out their arms, lean left, and cross all the way across the two lanes right in front of me to get into the same left turning lane that I was approaching. I had to smash my brakes to avoid them. I gave em a quick honk once we were all stopped in the turning lane and both arms up in the air with like a "what the f***" pose when they turned around to look at me, to let em know how close I had come, and that was the end of it.

This is not that. There's not a single ounce of blame to be put on them for this. Whether it was kinda dark, they had proper safety gear, or whatever else people are trying to say, this all falls squarely on the shoulders of the drunk piece of shit who killed them.

RIP awful news and as a biker myself, makes me disgusted to hear about a murder like this. it really sucks that the drunk driver generally escapes from these, while the innocent people pay for his behavior. I hope at least he spends the rest of his life in jail.

Sticks out tonight for Johnny and Matty, fellow HFers ?

Also loved to speed. But yeah he seemed more concerned about telling them being drunk and driving made him impatient and angry, like really? How about the fact that getting behind the wheel while drunk was already a crime, you don't get to act like it was a f***ing inconvenience. What a piece of shit all around.
The fact he'd been charged with DUI before (though the charges dropped due to technicality) should make it clear the book should be thrown at him. This wasn't even his first "oopsie, won't do it again". It's pretty clear this is what he does and what he'd continue to do if this horrendous event hadn't have happened.

I'm so upset over this I can hardly stand it. I'm not a Jackets fan, I didn't know these guys personally, but I have two young sons born in back to back years just like Johnny & Matt. I just cannot fathom what the family is dealing with right now. It makes me cry and it makes me nauseous. I'm so, so sorry Jackets & Flames fans. I'm so sorry to the Gaudreau family. I haven't been able to shake this all day, I'm just so filled with sorrow. Rest in peace, guys...

Wow
Suspect is “bummed” he is missing the long weekend and wonders if this could hurry up.

This dude must not be all the way there mentally
Long weekend?

This dude ain’t gonna know what long weekends are for 20+ years

which of course makes the guy that hit them look even worse; according to your assessment of the road, passing another car by itself would be dangerous with that little room and he shouldn't have been attempting it anyway.

Tragically sad in so many ways. So much loss. What can really be said?

Of course it goes to show you how fast things can change. Between this tragedy and that soccer player, Juan Izquierdo, in Brazil, it's been a very sad week for these types of unexpected losses.

Recreating the scene or pointing out what could have been done differently is something I don't see much point in, personally, but if that's the way people mourn or react to this news, I can't fault anyone for that. With something so seemingly random, looking for a reason can bring a measure of comfort.

Johnny Gaudreau seemed like a great guy, on and off the ice. RIP to the Gaudreau brothers.
