Things in this world are rarely simple.

He wasn’t decent enough to not drink and drive, or be overly aggressive on the road.

He was decent enough to not hit and run, which at least shows that he can take responsibility for what happened after the fact.

He needs to get a harsh sentence but he is not completely evil or even completely unredeemable.

Correct. He needs to be held accountable, and he needs to accept that responsibility. No matter what his sentence is he is still here, and Johnny and Matthew aren't.

Man I am not holding it together well at all. My heart is broken for Guy and Jane, such great salt of the earth people. Their sisters and Meredith with the two young kids as well. The day before their sister's wedding too, life just isn't fair. Completely devastated for them.

RIP Johnny and Matthew, you were loved.
Hope the Flames retire #13 ASAP

really just too sad to be angry at this moment
I wonder if the Flames wait until the Blue Jackets visit Calgary on Dec 3 to retire number 13.

holy shit how has this turned into defending the driver from the mean and wicked hockey posters? I guess it's my own fault for being surprised; there's always a handful of people (almost always the same ones) who see someone being shit on for doing something objectively bad by a bunch of people on the internet and go "I should defend this to own 'xyz' " or play fairness police.
The Internet has bred way too many contrarians. Some people seem to think opposing prevailing sentiment for its own sake is somehow virtuous and proof of how "independent" they are. In actuality they are just a bunch of assholes who either got bullied too much or not enough when they were in school.

Cars shouldn't be driving in the shoulder lane.
If you’re referring to the Gaudreau incident, it doesn’t appear there was a shoulder. In general you are correct tho but some states like Md allow it. Different rules everywhere

Fair point. This needs to coincide with better enforcement.

Not coincide.

You start with enforcing the rules you have. If that isn't helping, look into harsher punishment. But saying "we need harsher punishments" when the existing rules/laws aren't being enforced makes little sense.

This is dangerous. Prevailing sentiment is not always infallible. And seemingly a lot of people who buy into prevailing sentiment right away tend to villainize those who would rather ask questions and figure out all the facts at play before coming to a conclusion.

I like to clown around on this forum and today I just can't. Last night I went to bed not knowing for sure whether it was true or not but fearing for the worse. I played back over and over the time where I was myself hit by a car, almost 20 years ago. It happened while I was walking in Montreal but I was never able to ride a bike in this city ever again. I still have PTSD from that, and one pretty f***ed up leg that still hurts from time to time.

I also thought about all the people I know, some closer to me than others, who have been involved in incidents involving a vehicle. So many people.

I have been thinking all day about what/if/when to write a post about this. Trying to sort out through intense emotions. Of course I've been thinking of the Gaudreaus. But I guess at this point I just want. to say, if you're ready this and you're someone who has been impacted negatively by this type of incident, directly or indirectlyI feel for you.

And I hope you're doing your best to live your best life but if sometimes, reading about shitty tragedies like this gets you down, you're not a wuss. If you read how it happened and want to punch this guy, you're not a monster. And if you're someone who has been driving negligently, or has a substance abuse problem, get help.

He made a series of extremely poor willful decisions which resulted in harm that I’m sure he didn’t want to commit. He should be punished, and he should be given the chance for rehabilitation.
Most rational post on this thread

time of crash was between 8pm ans 830pm---Official sunset 733pm. The road is being described as a back road

I actually disagree here. I think he stuck around because there were witnesses.

Everything about his levels of obscene negligence and dickish attitude in his hearing today suggests he would have bolted off given the chance.

At least this moron is honest about it all in his police statement. Otherwise, this case would get really complicated with the right lawyer.

I think the few situation where a car can legally go to the shoulder is to avoid an accident.
Even without it, death by auto in New Jersey is minimum 5 years and maximum 10, required to serve 85%. He'll get 2 counts consecutively, but even if he gets the max, that's 17 years after parole. His max sentence is 17 years.

That's why I said "for its own sake".

Sometimes, usually even, prevailing sentiment is simply common sense.

light remains for a while after sunset. i assume dusk would probably be around 8pm which sounds like when the accident happened.

the pictures of the roads i seen make it looks mostly straight and flat with not many trees so probably no shadows or dark spots.

This is so heartbreaking, but sadly happens too often for us to keep track of.

The Gaudreaus, godspeed in the recovery process. I'm at a loss as to compare how difficult this must be.

The driver, only hope he learns something from this, like I hope all of the nervous lunatics on the 407/Pine Valley Dr do daily (I'm sure some of you are reading this).
It's not a damn race, nobody cares what you drive, gunning saves 5 minutes overall tops (check Waze), and we mostly laugh at you, until this crap happens.

Where do we have HIS lawyer chiming in? We do not have the entire picture--we do have the cops and DA building a slam dunk case. Before the statements given was his rights read to him. Did he suffer any injuries at the time of the accident that could have affected his mind--like a concussion? I was in an accident a few years ago and suffered a concussion that caused me some harm. Has the doctors released the drivers medical results.

So no we do not have all the information. We have only one side

There is no other side.

This isn't a case where we don't know What happened, we know EXACTLY What happened.

Some piece of shit got drunk, and then because he's a piece of shit he got behind the wheel where he proceeded to kill 2 people.

That's What happened what side could he possibly have?
What's he going to say?

Is he going to claim that a gun was held to his head and he was forced to drive drunk?

Because unless he can prove something like that, and he can't because it didn't happen.

He doesn't get to have a side.

Would caution be aware of scam gofundmes, would be surprised if the family was in a state of mind to set this up so quick.

RIP Johnny & Matty, as for the drunk driver, sure he deserves the hate but similar to the outrage after shootings there’s a systemic failure that allows the opportunity for it to happen. I can’t speak for NJ but I drove in different provinces in Canada for over 20 years and never once came across a random breathalyzer check. I’ve now lived in Australia over10 years and get stopped at least 4x year, morning or evening at random checks. Norway has a 0.02% legal limit which is closer to what it should be.

I’ve lost a best friend, co-worker, family friends son to drunk driving and yet the laws and enforcement haven’t really changed in decades so it’s socially acceptable to have a few and jump behind the wheel which is sad, tragic day but same as when my friend killed himsrlf drunk driving it wasn’t an accident, it was inevitable.

From a Columbus newspaper.

"New Jersey State Police said the Gaudreau brothers died after a suspected drunk driver crashed into them shortly before 8:30 p.m. as they biked along rural Pennsville Auburn Road (Salem County Route 551). It was roughly an hour after sunset."

So it was probably pretty dark already, honestly.

Accidents... which by definition... are not done on purpose, don't happen on roads?

This is an awful tragedy, and completely avoidable. This situation was not an "accident" in any way.

But this post is absolute nonsense. Sure, some accidents happen because of things you said. A LOT of accidents happen for many other reasons outside of someone's choices and recklessness.

Car blows a tire and swerves into another car... accident. Car hits a patch of black ice and slides into a concrete wall or another car... accident. I've had it happen more times than I can count where I've checked my blind spot and it's clear, so I've gone to change lanes on like a highway/tollway/interstate, and someone else changes lanes from the far right lane into the same middle lane I'm trying to change into, and we almost get in an accident. I've seen this happen where the cars do actually get into an accident on account of it. Car has to swerve to miss an animal that runs out, hits another car... accident. None of these things are on account of recklessness. They're... by definition... accidents.

Plenty of accidents happen involving people driving in a "safe and responsible manner."

Maybe you should clarify your post by saying something like "Drunk driving accidents aren't "accidents."
Why the f*** are you laughing
